About Indus Valley / Manhattan Valley

This elegantly attired restaurant, named after one of the oldest civilizations in the world, offers a menu that features many classic dishes from the Indian subcontinent like an assortment of kebabs, curries and biryanisslow cooked rice dishes which feature vegetables or meat and many aromatic spices. However, the menu at Indus Valley / Manhattan Valley also has some unusual offerings like chicken chat and chicken samosas, which do not normally feature on menus of Indian restaurants. Also, instead of the weekend buffet which is considered to be de rigueur at an Indian eatery, Indus Valley / Manhattan Valley offers a 'lunch special' which can be had in various permutations and combinations at different prices.

They need to seriously do something about their food. Very sub-par vegetarian curries.

It was a special occasion / Date night. It was a movie theme night. Watched "Victoria & Abdul". Since it had an Indian theme - we went to Indus Valley.

The food is always good. But this time it was exceptional. The service is always friendly

I had asked for a window seat and we got it .

We will definitely go back. It's a neighbourhood gem

The food was superb, and the mulligatawny soup was especially delicious. The place, however, was, all three of us agreed, overheated. We asked for air-conditioning, and they turned it on but only briefly. The same thing happened when we requested it a second time on that humid summer evening.

Best Indian food on the UWS. Nicely spiced, not bland like others. Fine service and hospitable staff. Highly recommended.

Very good weekend buffet but have reservations about continued striking employees outside location due to their unfair treatment of workers. Felt guilt eating there , strikers weren't present on Sunday afternoon otherwise I'd have honored striking employees.

The food, service, and ambiance were very good. However, we dined on a Wednesday evening and discovered that former employees are picketing the restaurant. The information flier we received explained that these people had been cheated by the owner, who changed the name of the restaurant from Indus Valley to avoid payments (we had wondered about the name change). We will not dine at the restaurant again as long as there is an ongoing labor dispute

Fresh, delicious food. Not a super modern ambiance, but for an "everyday" kind of place, not at all necessary--in fact, rather refreshing not to be in a restaurant that is trying really hard to be "hip"...

We had a lovely dinner at Manhattan Valley (FKA Indus Valley). The food was excellent, the service friendly and efficient, and the ginger pepper martini was great. I like to order extra spicy and here the level was kicked up while still preserving the balance of the dish's flavor. I recommend this restaurant highly.

The food here is always delicious and we come very often as it is in our neighborhood. While the portions don't look large, they really are bigger than you think. I'm usually stuffed when I leave! Favorites include Lamb Sagwalla, Malai Tikka Lasooni and Chicken Tikka Masala. Their mulligatawny soup is amazing as well....also very filling as they give you an ample bowlful. I think this is the best Indian restaurant on the upper west side!

It was lovely -- atmosphere and food. Started off with cocktails (we loved the pepper ginger drink). We had samosas, bread basket, biryani, chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloo, and tandoori shrimp. The flavors were delicious -- complex, aromatic and layered. Definitely recommend.

I had my first date with my now-husband at the newly-opened Indus Valley. While the food was less important at that time, we did love the place and we fell in love. We have been returning here every year since on our anniversary and are thrilled it's still alive and well! The food is consistently excellent and the service warm and friendly.

I took my friend out for a belated dinner and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The food was delicious.t was savory and spicy. It was beautiful to look at and had our mouths dancing. The staff was very attentive and they anticipated our needs. I love Indian food and this was my first time at this place. It will not be my last. They don't serve alcohol which is fine. They do serve the most fragrant tea.
Thank you for a memorable evening and a scrumptious meal.

It was a VERY cold day and no mater how much they fiddled with the thermostat, they had no heat! Service a little strange somehow--did our waiter understand English? No alcohol served although ttherre is a bar. Just a strange place. I would prefer Aangan in this neighborhood.

We have eaten many times over the years at this neighborhood restaurant, formerly Indus Valley, now called Indus Valley/Manhattan Valley. In the past, the food was generally good, and the ambiance was nice (good service, quiet -- a nice place to have a relaxed conversation with friends over tasty food and a glass of wine).

This week, we made a reservation and went there for a celebratory dinner only to find out AFTER we were seated and ready to order that they no longer served any alcohol. (At that point, it was too late to find another spot.)

I went back and looked at the restaurant description on OpenTable, as well as the restaurant's own website to double check to see if I missed something. I had not: the restaurant doesn't mention this fact anywhere, which is what prompted me to write this review.

I'm a foodie who will go to a great hole-in-the wall for great food, even if they don't serve wine or beer, but that's usually clear ahead of time. However, in a restaurant of this size, with table cloth, an actual physical bar, etc (to say nothing of the fact that they formerly served alcohol), I expect to be able to have a beer or wine, or, at the very least, be advised ahead of time when that's no longer the case.

Unfortunately, the quality of food has gone downhill, too. The samosas were delicious, but the entrees were pretty bad.

As a vegetarian, I love the choices Indian restaurants provide. Indus Valley is a perfect place for a variety of tastes and preferences. Meat, veggies, it's all there. The service was attentive, friendly and accommodating. Each dish, fish, chicken and veggie, was outstanding. Their vegetable samosas are the best I've had anywhere. I've been there before and will continue to make it a regular dining spot.

I was thrilled to find this wonderfully delicious restaurant! The staff was friendly, attentive and patient, as I'm that friend who takes forever deciding what to order. The food came to the table quickly and was soooo tasty. I will be back AND will order delivery.

I've been dined here multiple times, and the food is tasty on every occasion. I would recommend the buffet for the first timers because it gives you an opportunity to try many different things at once, and decipher whether you like it or not.

We have been to this restaurant years back for Mother's Day and had a wonderful time with great food...but unfortunately, the case wasn't the same this past Easter brunch. They only did buffet but the food was not replenished regularly.... as basic as rice had to be requested constantly. The food choices were poor...and service was very scarce. To top it off, they automatically added 20% service charge which ironically, we typically do anyway, but to be pushed into it when it's buffet and they had terrible service was just very unnerving to say the least. Am sad that our special day was a big disappointment.

I love Indus Valley and have eaten there many times. The food is delicious. However on this occasion I felt rushed by the staff , not only to order, but also to finish up and leave- on fact my friend and I went across the street to the diner for tea because we felt kind of pushed out. I guess I don't usually eat there on Sat. Night.
That said, I am sure. I will go back and give thrm another shot.

Very good dining in traditional Indian cuisine. Appetizers quite good...we loved the Paneer. Main courses varied: so-so fish, great chicken dishes, cauliflower & onions really great, lamb very good, breads perfect ...beer all around. Our group of 6 felt hurried to order, but the waiter got the hint after being redirected by us. We had to caution him not to remove plates so quickly while food was being consumed....Everyone enjoyed the quiet dining experience.
