Indian Oven - Haight Ratings and Reviews
This is my favorite Indian restaurant in San Francisco and the food is consistently good. The service was a bit slower on this occasion than usual but the wait staff was friendly and it was a pleasant evening. They seem to be doing a lot more delivery orders than I'd seen the past so that may be affecting the speed in which food comes out now.
So last minute thought about lunch and made reservations for 1:30, we arrived early 1:15 or so - did not need it. It was only us at first, but doing a decent take away business.
Took a bit to get to order, menus were very dirty.
Another table came in and ordered after us. They got their lunch before we got our appetizer, that we watched the host (no cook) prepare for us.
Other table was almost done before we got our lunch. The food was very good - though the dish we ordered spicy wasn't.
Restaurant wasn't that clean and service had an air of "meh we don't care if you're here."
Our experience is on par with most of the other reviews. There are lots of Indian places and we'll move on to another.
Music was so loud we couldn't even talk, had to ask if they would be able to turn it down. Then we ordered our food and started with the samosa which came out cold. Told the waiter and he took them back and brought out new ones. They were almost burnt on the outside yet still cold inside. He told us since they serve "pre frozen" samosa's that is why their cold inside.
We decided to get up and leave and try Vietnamese instead.
This was the second time I've been to Indian Oven. Our family makes an annual trip from Sacramento to San Francisco. We all decided it was so good last year that we had to go again. Wel it was even better this year. We aren't too familiar with Indian food but all our choices this time we're excellent. I highly recommend the Murgh Makhani dish. Everyone at our table agreed it was the best of the best.
I haven't been to this restaurant in several years (it was previously my favorite Indian restaurant in SF) and this visit was very disappointing. The samosas were gummy and the prawns in the tandoori looked and tasted old. The aloo gobi was good as was the sag with lamb. The rice was ridiculous-----they just threw a few frozen peas on the rice at the last minute-----didn't even mix it in. We brought a friend for her first visit to this restaurant and we were actually embarrassed by the poor food. I hope they get their act together again.
Restaurant boasts lots of awards and I found the food quite satisfying, but not a destination location. Waiter did not ask about how spicy we wanted the food and it was flavorful but not very spicy hot. Didn't ask if we wanted any chutneys or raita, which after the fact we regretted not asking for.
This used to be our favorite Indian restaurant in SF, before we moved to Marin 10 years ago. The quality of the food has dropped significantly since we last ate here several years ago. It was disappointing to say the least. We have no interest in returning. On the plus side, the samosas are still very good, and the busboy was very friendly.
The chicken was tough and dry. The sauces were watered down. This is the first time I ate Indian food that had no flavor whatsoever. The naan tasted like it was bought at Trader Joe's and heated up in the microwave. 10 years ago I lived near this restaurant and it would be jammed packed every night - the food was outstanding. Now it's gone by the wayside and I would never go back for such below average food.
We've been to India Oven many times, and it was well worth the trip. Delicious food, great service. But this last dinner was a huge disappointment. Had to wait a full hour for anything to eat. And when our appetizers finally arrived, the dinner also arrived about 2 minutes later. They had TWO beers to offer; all others on the menu were n/a. Some pieces of chicken and lamb were inedible, no exaggerating.
This was NOT AT ALL the experience from previous visits. They were simply overwhelmed, and the kind waiter was very apologetic. I still will not risk it and go back. Even for their fantastic chai tea.
A great restaurant, and I can be picky about Indian. My first visit was for business (a party of 5); second visit was my wife and me. Both times, the food was amazing and we were made to feel very welcome.
One dish was ordered both nights - Baingan Bharta. It was smokey and flavored with ginger. Very enjoyable. It was also easy to modify a dish to your tastes.
P.S. They did a great deal of take-away. Another good sign of very good food.
Took my GF here. Several times they asked if we wanted wine and she said on glass for herself. They kept asking me. Also they would not listen her her. A bit too "traditional" if you ask me. Also tried to charge us for extra wine we didn't order. They are nice, and food is good, but would look elsewhere.
We are used to eating Indian food frequently. So, when the waitress asked mild, medium, or hot, we said hot. Boy, was that a mistake. The food was so hot you couldn't taste any flavors, it was horrible. We got some plain yogurt to help cut the hotness but it was still horrible, and without any flavor. Brought most of it home and reheated with butter to cut the hot still but it was really awful. Never order the food hot! We should have sent it back, but feel guilty doing so when we had selected the option. Should have been some commonsense by the restaurant to not load it with chillies. Even the bread basket that we had found to be delicious in the long ago past was only second rate naan. Can buy better at Trader Joes.
Love this place! Typically get their take out, but had friends in town, so at at the Filmore location. Consistently great! Service was attentive, but almost too attentive; they had 2 servers that didn't seem to communicate with *each other*, hovered around our table (felt a bit rushed) and asked the same questions to me/my friends.
The food & atmosphere are wonderful. Great neighborhood place! :)
We had been here for "Date Night Indian" several times, and liked the food enough to bring my family of ten for a lunch before my graduation ceremony. The food was great, fresh and bright, and everyone was fed, vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. I'm not sure they do big-group reservations very often, however, as there was a little last-minute table and chairs adding to accommodate us all - yes, I'd put 10 on the reservation. But, we were the only people in the restaurant for most of our time there, the staff was friendly and professional, and the setting was very pretty with sunlight and murals. It's really a kind of gem, hidden half a block off of Haight Street.
We were super surprised by this place. We found this place through OpenTable cause it was one of a few places that had availability at 9:30pm on a Friday night, last-minute (15min), and in our area. The food is great. Just the right amount of spices. The portions look small when they're first served, but four of us were full with 4 entrees, rice, and naan. The server was great; super helpful and attentive. We stayed past their closing time, and they never kicked us out/rushed us out.. I'd recommend this place for sure.
This is a nice, upscale, white linen tablecloth option in the Fillmore & Haight Street location. And while the music was a little too loud for normal conversation and the food was a tad overpriced for the amount and quality of food offered, service was wonderful and the dishes overall are fair to good. I would go here again if I needed to find a place in the Fillmore/Haight neighborhood that was slightly upscale and was good for both groups and an intimate dinner for two.
We were looking for a unique, neigbourhood style restaurant on a Friday night in SanFrancisco. We were lucky to find Indian Oven and that it had availability. The service was fun, good energy, and knowledgeable. Recommendations made were outstanding. They didn't try to over sell on quantity or quality. Food was exceptional. Price was very good. I'd go back in a heart beat.
As a party of three, we ordered and shared the butter chicken, chana masala, lamb (not sure which type), garlic naan and raita. Everything from the food, portion size, service, price and atmosphere was great. The only problem was parking as we had to wait a while and circle the blocks a few times to find a spot. Highly recommend.
Generally fine. We were there on Christmas evening and while busy in the restaurant they were VERY busy w/ phone orders. Food didn't arrive for more than an hour after ordering - though lots of take-out orders being picked up. Had to speak w/ waiter and floor manager multiple times before we got served, even after people at the next table, who arrived later, were already served. Overall, the food did not make up for the hassle.
They were very busy and I waited for the nan bread while my food was getting cold it came half way through the meal. There were some spicy dishes and the wait for water was even longer we had six people at the table but the food was stellar. Would I go back yes but not on such a busy day.
Have been to Indian Oven 3 times over the last 10 years - consistently excellent in all categories. This is a very well run Indian, with excellent food and the added ambience of the kitchen sharing the same open floor plan on the lower level. Norman (25 yrs at Indian Oven) runs a tight ship with a very welcoming attitude. Hard for me to go to San Francisco without a visit.
Maybe it was just holiday chaos, but I have never in my life had worse service in a restaurant. We were seated quite a while after the time of our reservation, and from then on it was just surreal: the food that arrived at our table was not the food we ordered, but our bill included everything we ordered. Multiple requests produced some of the things we ordered, but not all. Eventually we just gave up. Other tables had the same problems.
