We have eaten at India Oven many times over the years and the experience has been good,
not fantastic. Sunday the place was empty and they must have been serving the rejects from Thursday's buffet. Food was not served hot, appeared to be have reheated several times,
chicken dish had five small pieces of chicken. Server(s) apparently were enjoying an afternoon
nap as they did not come by until we were almost through with the meal. While we were there
only one small group was seated. Apparently, the neighborhood knew something we did not.
Typical Indian buffet, nothing special to recommend it.
Food was very average but it was an easy enough option for us and the kids. Not likely to return. There are better options for the price and service.
very good food, very good service, low prices, all good.
Excellent first time at this traditional Indian restaurant. The dishes were very tasty and well executed. The portions are quite generous, and the price is right.
Excellent Indian food at a reasonable price. Great neighborhood place
Very good food and service. Ambiance a bit lacking with mostly empty dining room.
One of my favorite restaurants, but the experience this time was below expectations. The waiter took his time offering menus and taking the drink order. No welcoming comments or suggestions about the menu. Took some time to get our food even though we were the only ones in the restaurant at the time. Food was very good, as usual. Every waiter should take Lesson 1 in the restaurant business: treat every customer as a friend who would want to come back and see you again.
If you have a craving for Indian food this is the place to go. All the appetizers are tasty, and our favorite main dishes are the tikka masala, palak paneer, and vegetable biryani. All washed down with a good Indian beer.
Met a friend here for dinner and I got stuck in traffic due to an accident and they couldn't have been nicer regarding the reservations. They took our order right away and we got served quickly but were not rushed at all even though we were the last ones to leave. Food was delicious and served hot and the server even asked the degree of "spice" we wanted - that was much appreciated even though we both like spicy food. This is always a consistently excellent place to go for Indian food.
Friendly service. Excellent tandoori. Complimentary appetizer and rice pudding. Will go back.
First off, the food was okay. We had Saag Paneer and Chicken Tikka Masala, along with Naan and rice. The rating of 2 stars is the wait staff. Upon entering, I mentioned we had the reservation. They kept saying that we didn't need to make a reservation. Then when it came time to order, they kept pushing more of the appetizers, naan and rice. We said okay to a second serving of rice and then ended up taking it home. We also had a discount for the second entree which they did not honor. Too many other choices in the City for Indian food. Pick another restaurant other than this one.
We have been here a lot of times and this was the first time we did not have a great experience. Let's say it was an unusual off night for them.
Went on a Monday night for dinner with my 25 year old son and 82 year old mother. Everyone was happy. Service was attentive, but not overly so.
Food came quickly and was tasty. Nice ambience, quiet and good for conversation.
Not what it once was. Food was flavorless and service was awful. I used to go all time, but I won't be Cingular back anytime soon.
We arrived on Christmas Eve with reservations and our table was not ready and waited for 10-15 minutes. Escorted to our table that had place settings for 2 out of the 8 people seated. When the server brought glasses, silverware and plates it was as if he had never set a table before. Not the best way to start a dinner. Also, garbage on the floor as we entered the establishment and floors so slippery we shuffled our way to the table for fear of slipping and falling. So here's the deal: Their food is good. Chicken Masala wonderful. But I'm going to look for another restaurant to celebrate Christmas Eve. All the other stuff takes away from the dinning experience. Too bad.
One of the few restaurants in SF open for Thanksgiving. The restaurant was only one quarter filled at 7 pm. The food was good and plentiful and the wait staff was excellent. Table linens were impeccable and the overall ambiance was very good. It was worth driving out to the Sunset to enjoy a good meal at a fair price.
Delicious food, clean, tasteful and pleasant decor, spacious and quiet (which is rare) in The City. The service is always excellent without being overly friendly.
Great place for Indian! Can be romantic or casual. Will come back!
India Clay Oven: The waiter disappeared for long periods of time and we had to ask another waiter to help us. The music was too loud so it was noisy even though the restaurant was mostly empty. I noticed none of the diners were Indian. The wine was poured from the last of an open bottle even though we were dining early, and it was too warm and not good. The lamb was over-cooked and dry. The only vegetables, even in the vegetarian dishes, were peas. Overall this is by far the worst dining experience I have had in a very long time.
I am wondering why we did not receive points for our reservation?
The food was very good, especially the chicken tiki masala. The portions were a bit on the small side. While there were children present in the restaurant, including our 5 year old, it wasn't particularly a kid-friendly space (no booster seat offered and only a same size glass for our child, instead of a smaller paper or plastic cup with a straw). The service left something to be desired. Our waiter may have been having a hard nite since it seemed that he didn't really want to be bothered by us, and never checked in with us. The food is definitely the reason to go to India Clay Oven.
This is one of my favorites..Too generous helpings so never room for desert..Probably just as well!
India Clay Oven was a wonderful dining experience for my fiancee and myself. It's definitely helpful to review their online menu before dining there (though not necessary), as it has full-colour photographs of nearly every item on the menu; very helpful, considering the confusion that sometimes comes from trying to visualize a type of food from a different culture, no less one you've never eaten before.
The food was amazing, and the chicken was cooked to perfection, crisp and flavourful on the outside, and juicy on the inside. All of the sauces that came along with the meal added wonders to it, and the chai tea came in a big mug and at perfect drinking temperature, yet cost only two dollars!
One of my best dining experiences!!
Why we have never had dinner at this restaurant is beyond me. This place is great and the food is AMAZING!!!!!. I have Indian food before but this tops it all. Great food and service.
All the dishes taste the same, hot and no flavor. the chicken masala was so orange that after lunch I looked at my fingers, they were stained from the dye of the chicken. Unnatural.
Great dining in every way. Service was attentive and friendly; beautiful Indian murals on walls; and the food was delicious and authentic: Benghan Barta, spinach naan, lamb vindaloo, rice pudding were each the best we've had outside of India. Not greasy!
the ambiance was relaxing and beautiful.
O! you can park in front of restaurant for free if you have a bit of luck. There are a couple of designated parking spots.
Immediately upon our arrival at the restaurant, we eagerly ordered our food (primarily because we only had 45-60 minutes to eat and pick up our son at a sport practice). Although the food was "fair", what disappointed us the most was the extremely slow service (slow even though there were only a few other small parties in the restaurant). We suspect the waiter completely lost our order, however, he did not seem concerned about it when we confronted him asking about our order (30+ minutes after ordering). In fact, he couldn't repeat our order to us. He appeared to chat with other waiters about our situation and they appeared to be laughing. When our food came, there was no discount...and we had to leave quickly to get our son. Not good!
Not very crowded at lunch. Did not need reservation. Food not very spicy, but good. The rice dessert had no added spice to it. We got chai without sugar and it was very good and strong. The mango lassi we got also was very good.
This place has traditional Indian food, deliciously prepared. The service here is exceptionally friendly (probably the nicest waiters in the city) and quick. It is a casual place, great for going last minute in jeans or with kids. I have never had a bad item off their menu, so if you are in the mood for great Indian and don't want to deal with the more upscale DOSA scene, come here. My one issue is it always seems a bit drafty here, so wrap in a shawl or sweater and ask to sit away from the lofty floor to ceiling windows if here in cold weather.
Very nice vib to the restaurant. White table cloths and beautiful fresh roses on each table was very inviting. The buffet area was rather cramped and the waiters were not helpul in telling first time diners how to proceed. We had to ask after sitting at our table for 10 minutes. The food was excellent so that helped us to overlook the poorly trained waitstaff.
The food was very good . It's a little out of the way from the main tourist areas, but worth the drive .
good flavors, but the lamb and chicken were over cooked
This is a slightly more spendy Indian restaurant than the likes of Shalimar and Pakwan, which are favorites of my Indian friends, but the food here was decent. It's a nice choice for indian food in this neighborhood to get some variety. The restaurant is nicely decorated and more upscale looking than the other places noted above. The food is a bit more americanized which is good for catering to the general public.
Service was quite attentive; even gifted my guest a CD of contemporary Indian music when she shared with staff she enjoyed Bhangra music!
Great Indian food and wonderful service!
The food was fabulous and the wait staffs worked together in such team fashion.
We went as a last minute decision on a Sunday after church. The buffet was excellent. It has a lot of choices to sample. I really liked this so I can get a good example of the food. The chicken soup was also excellent. It was tomato based instead of stock. The lentle soup was so so. It was very thin instead of the thick lentle soup I'm used to. We also had rice with shrimp, which was also excellent.
Good food, good service -- we've had two holiday dinners here and enjoyed both. Nice to be at a restaurant where quality of experience and food are more important than being trendy. We'll be back f'sure!
Never disappoints! Always very good food. Love how easy they are with large groups. They even accommodated our request for several separate bills for our party of 12. Can highly recommend this venue for dinner!
