Our original restaurant in Japan was established and opened its first door in the heart of Roppongi, Tokyo in 1970, as the traditional "Robata-yaki" restaurant. Since then, Inakaya has been loved by substantial numbers of distinguished personalities, comprising of former President of the United States, Hollywood stars, and other celebrities and the epicureans from around the world for more than 30 years. "Robata" is the Japanese term that stands for "around a sunken hearth" and "yaki" means "grilling". Families used to gather around the hearth for dinner, which evolved into "Robata-yaki" style. It is known as a type of traditional cuisine, which features fresh ingredients grilled in proximity of guests' own eyes. Foods are cooked on open-flame, its ancient but healthy grilling method of dropping excess oil has attained its popularity, and has spread throughout Japan. And now it comes to New York!

Great Japanese delights. We order a few starters and can recommend the squid. The sushi combo was delicious. The service was impeccable and we loved how you get served by the chefs directly with the paddles over the bar. Highly recommend for a date night or out with your mates.
Fantastic. We had a great time and the food was excellent. We ordered one of the sushi platters and it was such a good experience. Our waitress was amazing!! Funny, attentive, and charismatic. She made sure the birthday dessert was a special surprise. It was a little pricey but fine for a special occasion.
I've heard of this place several months ago and finally got a chance to pay a visit. The ambiance is great and the waiters are really friendly. We booked through Opentable and could only get counter seat which actually something I prefer. Around 8pm there is a mochi pounding ceremony where you can jump in and try some pounding and of course there is free mochi for all afterward. The place is very entertaining and I recommend to get a 6-course-meal deal from Groupon/Living Social. We will definitely be back with family and more friends soon !!

Trang is awesome! I made a reservation, as I always do. However, when my friend and I got to the restaurant, there were no tables available so she offered us seats at the bar until a table opened up which took only less than 10 minutes. She nicely explained to us the situation. She handled the situation pretty well. Trang is very professional and friendly. My family and friends actually look forward to seeing her each time we go for dinner at INAKAYA.
Have been here many times. Very interesting and creative choices of Japanese cuisine (far beyond just sushi, etc..) Also, good vegetarian selections as well. Great Sake selection and some fun cocktails.
Lovely staff and good service. Go here for pre-theater often since it's right in theater district.
I'm a regular at this outpost. Usually for business dinner but this time I was with family. Party of six was seated in the corner next to busy bar. Server rarely came by to check on our order or refill tea. An hour and half later, two main courses have yet to arrive or forgotten. We cancelled the order and finished with desserts. The food was fine just lackluster service. I don't recommend sitting near the bar. Ask for seats at the counter or tables .
I took a client out for dinner and when we arrived, the entire restaurant was empty except for one table. We were brought over to sit at the sushi bar. I asked instead if we could sit at one of the open tables and we were told since the reservation was booked on open table, I could not have an actual table. Only those who make phone reservations could sit at the tables. The entire restaurant was empty and this to me was quite unacceptable. I told her I would then cancel my open table reservation and call the phone, in which she told me she couldn't seat me until 9:30. Ridiculous.
It should be noted somewhere on open table that you will only get seated at the sushi bar and not get a regular table unless you call and book over the phone.

We had the belly pork and the sashimi for the starters - both were excellent in terms of presentation and taste . The pork was so tender . The mains were the beef skewers which was nice but nothing exceptional . And the seafood rice was very tasty and so beautifully presented . Loved the moochi dessert and almond pudding . We also ordered the yellow tail and scallion rolls which was So Good !
Overall a great Dining Experience! We'll be back !
The ambience and environment was great; it could also be considered to be romantic. However, the food was nothing to write home about. It was mediocre sushi/sashimi. But I would have to say the mochi was absolutely extraordinary. They make it in house, as they put on shows in front of the restaurant. Overall, the experience is entertaining and great, but the food is comparable to any of the other japanese restaurants.
We went for NYC Restaurant Week. The prix fixe menu was very good value although some dishes were better than others. The sushi is standard, nothing fancy or particularly amazing but also not bad. The most interesting dish we had was the Kaisen Seiro. The skewers were nothing fancy. I wish I had tried more of the grilled options since it's a robata-yaki restaurant, but I was happy with ordering from the prix fixe menu since it's usually quite expensive here for just a few skewers.
Meh - I read good reviews but it fell short. Waiter was very friendly but missed 2 things on our order after confirming them. One he rushed back and fixed, the other never came but we also did not get charged for it. Sushi was good but I've had better in NYC at half the price.
This was our first time at Inakaya. Being so close to Time Square, I was skeptical that it would be touristy and overrated. But, we were pleasantly surprised. We both ordered from the Restaurant Week menu, and portions were the right size for us. Our waitress was very attentive and made us feel welcome, and each course arrived just in time. Our first course (pork & carpaccio) was excellent. Our second course (sushi / grilled meat) was good, but I've had better. And the final course (mochi ice cream / waffle ice cream) was very good. Overall, we enjoyed our experience, and would definitely come back for another visit.
My friend and I decided to check out Inakaya during NYC restaurant week. My favorite dish out of the three courses was the trio carpaccio. It had such amazing flavors. From the appetizer my expectations were pretty high but the main didn't reach expectations. The atmosphere was great, very casual and the noise wasn't too loud or quiet. The server took a bit too long for my liking when serving us however and it was hard to locate him when looking for him.
Good spot in Hell's Kitchen with great sashimi, nigiri and great whole fish options limited beer options but when the sushi is this fresh and the seafood choices are this great, have a Sapporo and enjoy. Traditional Japanese delivery and greeting for all customers , an experience .
