Our original restaurant in Japan was established and opened its first door in the heart of Roppongi, Tokyo in 1970, as the traditional "Robata-yaki" restaurant. Since then, Inakaya has been loved by substantial numbers of distinguished personalities, comprising of former President of the United States, Hollywood stars, and other celebrities and the epicureans from around the world for more than 30 years. "Robata" is the Japanese term that stands for "around a sunken hearth" and "yaki" means "grilling". Families used to gather around the hearth for dinner, which evolved into "Robata-yaki" style. It is known as a type of traditional cuisine, which features fresh ingredients grilled in proximity of guests' own eyes. Foods are cooked on open-flame, its ancient but healthy grilling method of dropping excess oil has attained its popularity, and has spread throughout Japan. And now it comes to New York!
Please note this online reservation is for the Robata counter seating.

Although the food was delicious, we were seated over 35 minutes after our reservation, with the hostess telling us: "About ten minutes" continuously! Once we were seated, everything: the food and the service were excellent.

Everything was so good, but especially spicy tuna on crispy rice in the course menu was sooooo delicious❤️

I went there 2 years ago for their pf menu. We had great experience. We came here again today also for their pf menu. However, we felt the food and the service weren’t as good as when we were here 2 years ago. For example, we haven’t finished our 3rd course but they already served us our 4th course. By the time I finished my 3rd course, the 4th course’s cold.

What is usually such a fun experience was sort of ruined when my friend spilled her miso soup all on her lap and no one came over to help or ask if she was ok. We ordered a new soup and I had to make sure to ask for it on the house. We used all of our napkins to clean the spill and they took those but didn’t bring us new ones until we asked. I felt like they really didn’t care about the customer.

Flipping fantastic! Did sushi bar seating and was entertained all night viewing a large bustling and authentic Japanese kitchen. Food was hot off the grill fresh, served to us over the wall on long pizza oven type “planks”. Go for the prix fixe, well worth it, as it can include lobster, MASSIVE prawn and oysters and amazing tuna. Friendly and attentive service. Heavily Japanese crowd, which is a good sign. Would definitely go back again and again. My fiancée absolutely loved this place.

Our first visit, we (2) had the 6-course meal on a Living Social half-price deal; with tipping on the full value, came to about $50 per person. We had a great time sitting at the counter and felt it was an excellent value. It felt really friendly in there, not hurried, not snooty, not crowded. We liked all of the food, the restaurant was not too noisy (a rarity in nyc!), our wait staff was polite and efficient; the portion sizes were good; no complaints whatsoever! I would definitely go back. The location right next to Port Authority is very convenient. Next time I will order a la carte to try something we did not already have. Inakaya could easily become my regular go-to place.

Very disappointed in the food. Service wasn't that great. Food looks like it's cooked by ametur. Tasteless and burned. My kids will not go back again

Sashimi: higher quality tuna was not available by 8 pm. Regular tuna tasted “processed “. Eel, salmon and roe were good not great.
Waygu beef skewers were amazing. Maybe 4 oz for $34, a third skewer would have made it reasonable. Sake was reasonably priced and complex.
Fun atmosphere.

We came for our 30th anniversary for the 6 course tasting menu. The staff was extraordinary pleasant and professional and the decor was well done. We sat at the robata bar which we were told was very unique. It was interesting but not amazing. Most of all however, the food, which was plentiful and nicely presented, was just OK - nothing special. We did have a Living Social deal which made the evening very reasonable. This is probably a fun spot for a large group, if you have show tickets nearby or if you are not very familiar with Japanese food.

We came here because of a groupon coupon promising half off for a 6 course tasting menu.
We left hungry. Went home and had some pizza on the way.
Our waiter was charming and attentive but the portions were tiny and we have much better Japanese food on the upper westside.
Would never return.
There is some chanting and costumes but even that bit of drama doesn't change the experience or give it any authenticity.
Too bad.

This was the fourth or fifth time we ate at Inakaya. We arrived 10 minutes early but although there were many open tables they asked us to wait. They kept us waiting for 40 minutes and would not let us sit at an any of the five open tables because we were only a party of two and these table were for four people. They wanted us to wait for a table at the bar. When asked, they replied that they were waiting for a party of eight. This was simply untrue as no party of eight arrived when we were there. Eventually we were allowed to sit at a table but at that point the mood was ruined. Inakaya does not honour reservations if it thinks it can do better with walk-up customers. That is a terrible indictment of their approach to their customers.

Food was great! If you have a friend whose birthday is coming, visit Inakaya and tell someone it’s your friend’s birthday! They will offer you one free dessert.
