About Imperial

At Imperial, Chef/Owner Vitaly Paley and the culinary team will re-imagine and re-present Pacific Northwest culinary pathways. Exemplifying Oregon’s own James Beard's culinary philosophy, Chef/Owner Vitaly Paley and his culinary team will explore menu ideas that have historic significance while exploring cooking methods and ingredients from the diverse bounty of our region. The most prominent feature of Imperial's kitchen is an impressive wood fire grill and rotisserie that will incorporate the use of native hard and fruitwoods. Inspired by warm, primitive, burning campfires and the big open spaces of the Pacific Northwest, Imperial will concentrate on natural and uncomplicated preparations, serving the community by celebrating its past and providing a welcoming and generous place to eat.

I made reservations for 8:15pm on a Friday night. The scene was busy and loud. Huge concrete pillars gave the restaurant an unfinished vibe with antique-looking chandeliers and modern abstract paintings. The bar was bustling and looked fun but we could not find a seat so we waited in the vestibule for our window table (as requested) to become available. It took longer than expected due to the fact that the wait staff had been slammed with two large parties seated at the same time right before us. The hostess/wait staff was nice enough to comp us two drinks for the wait.
Dinner was delicious!
Duck meatballs..YUM! *
Parker House rolls..YUM! *
Scallops. Tasty.***
Roasted chicken. Average.**
Potatoes. Yum. (smokey-tasting and just a little crispy).***
That morning, the head chef had cut up a steer which had been aged 50 days and Imperial had a special menu just for those cuts of meat.
Very impressive, but we passed for lighter fare.
All in all, we thought the food was delicious and the menu was very good for all types of palates.
I wish the restaurant was a bit quieter, as it was hard to hear over other conversations near our table.
I was hoping for a romantic dinner with my husband but Imperial is set up for larger parties who don’t mind a noisy venue.

Fantastic food and service. Third time back and never disappoints. Had the chance to sit at the kitchen bar this time. Definitely our favorite seat of the house.

Great food, but noise level at lunch time was horrible. Impossible to hear the person across the table. Avoid high volume times!

I thought for the increased price, food was mediocre. I expected more from reading other reviews. Hostess wasn’t super friendly, and our waitress didn’t know what seasoning was on one of our breakfast items. And didn’t seem to care or want to find out. I would not recommend this place to others for breakfast. However, I haven’t been for lunch or dinner. Also, the lightning was very bright and directly overhead, and it was loud.

We had a Saturday night dinner reservation at 6:15. We were a bit early and they seated us promptly. All of the staff was super friendly. The food is outstanding with a number of unique, unusual choices which is exactly what we were looking for. The drinks were super and the wine list was robust. We felt well taken care of, were able to enjoy our special occasion with lots of energy around us, yet we could still have an intimate conversation. Well done!!!

I’ve had a nice dinner here previously, so I looked at their lunch menu and thought there were enough offerings to be interesting. However, we ate on Saturday with no warning they only serve brunch which wasn’t at all what we wanted. It was mediocre; (no English muffins )?
Too many great options in Portland for us to go back

We enjoyed our brunch at Imperial — the signature fried chicken was excellent but the gravy and biscuits that accompanied it were a little greasy for my taste. My friend enjoyed his crab omelette. The side dish of collard greens in a tomato sauce was wonderful.

AMAZING. Our meal was so tasty! Everything came out quickly and was delicious. Only thing to note here was that we needed to adjust our reservation and so we called the restaurant directly and no one ever got back to us so we just did it through open table. Other than that, this place was busy, accommodated groups of all sizes and was overall just a fun ambiance.

Had a quick brunch as a solo diner. The bartender, very busy, was my waiter at a bar table. So, service was not that stellar. My order got a little messed up, but there was no problem in clearing up my bill etc. The omelette I had was nice. I don't put much effort into reviewing breakfast. I mean it's the same in a lot of places. But the presentation, care, and dinner menu looks great. I'd go back for another meal there. Nice interior and decor.

It was a bit too noisy for our group.
Every one in our group liked their food except me. I had plain sunnyside up eggs which were cold and browned potatoes which were overdone. I probably should have sent it back but didn't feel like waiting for it.

I spent 3 hours digging through the internet to find a new place to take my fiancé for dinner. We most definitely were not disappointed! The food was tremendous. It was a little louder then I had hoped but the menu made up for the overall volume. The hostess was very polite and even complimented us as she walked us to our table. Our server was very knowledgeable but was also very busy and it showed.

Overall a great experience and I would recommend it to family and friends.

The hostess seated us in the front that has no ambience so asked for a table in the back with a view of the wood burning grill which was much better. Wines very expensive but our waitress was very knowledgeable and good. My salmon was a tough piece but cooked perfectly.

Food was mediocre. For the price I would've expected a chef to not have to use excessive amounts of salt and oil to create flavor. Aside from the greasy salty fried chicken and 80% fat slab of meat, the dessert was incredible.

Highly overrated. The last two Vitaly Paley venues to include Headeaters we have been to is nothing special. Although you get a lot for the money it’s basically glorified pub food . A lack of creativity. I won’t be back.

Our first time dining at Imperial. We had a friend in town and we wanted to try someplace new. The food was excellent, especially the smoked mushroom! Waitstaff was good and knowledgeable. It was very noisy and lively, which was fine for our party, but I wouldn’t recommend for a romantic date.

If you're looking for a nice plate to eat that isn't too expensive, Imperial is the way to go. The food comes alone (meaning you won't get a side of fries) but it is plenty on its own. The side salad is enough to fill you up, the atmosphere is one where you feel welcome but not overpowered. Also, try the rolls. 100% the best in the States, hands down.

I've been here before and had a terrific meal, but this time it was just a massive fail. We went for a quick breakfast and ordered basic foods - eggs, potatoes, toast, bacon, etc. And every single thing was just off. The breakfast potatoes were absolutely the worst - dry, cold and inedible. Maybe they were having an off day, but I would not recommend this place for breakfast. There are far too many options for a delicious breakfast in Portland to risk an off day meal.

We had less than an hour for dinner but I really wanted my friend from out of town to have a memorable meal. Our server cheerfully helped us make choices that we could enjoy fully but quickly enough to get to our event up the street (at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall) on time. The four small plates we ordered all landed on the table within 10 minutes. Three out of four were excellent (duck meatballs, fried chicken, roasted Brussel sprouts that were the best Brussels I've ever had) and the fourth was good. We even ended up having enough time to split a slice of outstanding pecan pie. Oh, and we enjoyed our mocktails as well. Nice work, Imperial.
