About Imperial

At Imperial, Chef/Owner Vitaly Paley and the culinary team will re-imagine and re-present Pacific Northwest culinary pathways. Exemplifying Oregon’s own James Beard's culinary philosophy, Chef/Owner Vitaly Paley and his culinary team will explore menu ideas that have historic significance while exploring cooking methods and ingredients from the diverse bounty of our region. The most prominent feature of Imperial's kitchen is an impressive wood fire grill and rotisserie that will incorporate the use of native hard and fruitwoods. Inspired by warm, primitive, burning campfires and the big open spaces of the Pacific Northwest, Imperial will concentrate on natural and uncomplicated preparations, serving the community by celebrating its past and providing a welcoming and generous place to eat.

Delicious. Would go again. Specials were too expensive for me. Regular menu was excellent.

The main reason for giving this restaurant a 2 star is because I'm sick and tired of Portland restaurants imposing their wellness tax onto their patrons. This is something that the business owners should establish on their own and not pass along to the customer. If the owner doesn't provide insurance benefits, then it is up to the server to decide if they want to work there or not. I do not know of any other businesses that so obviously pass along their responsibility to the consumer. As a consumer I choose not to go back to any Portland restaurants that excise this "tax".
And when questioned about this "tax" our server was visibly annoyed by our inquiry. So, sorry to bother you with our idiotic questions....
The food was good, but not good enough to compromise on our beliefs.

Often an ambitious menu turns out being just marketing and the execution falls short. This kitchen delivered the promise of the menu.

Having been to the chefs other eateries, this was a big disappointment. It definitely feels like an expense account sort of place - the prices are ridiculous - and the quality of the food doesn't keep up with the prices. And it's LOUD, LOUD, LOUD.

OK, some good - some bad. The noise at Imperial is very high. The tables (next to the kitchen) are smashed up next to each other. No place to go to have a private conversation. Waiter has to navigate between tables and his butt end up in your face as he attends to other diners. Not his fault, nothing he can really do. Food was hit and miss. The Seared Scallops were flavorful and cooked to perfection. But, $23 for two scallops? The aged burger, on the special menu, was ok - but not worth the price ($24). Side potatoes with the burger were great. Side Smoked Mushrooms were tough and chewy. Wait staff was very professional and attentive, Restaurant was very clean and an upscale vibe. Too many other great places to eat in PDX to come back here. Not a fan.

As always, Imperial was excellent. My only complaint is the noise level--wonder what could be done about it.

Everything was great, but it gets just a two-star overall rating because I am sick and tired of the PDX foodie spots with the SILENT (i.e. sort of "hidden") wellness % tack-ons. You chose to work food service. You get something called tips. Almost all of the rest of us in the world DO NOT get tips or silent wellness tack-on charges thrown in. Yes, many of us have employers who contribute to our company sponsored health plans. If you restaurant owners can not do that, sorry, but that is a "YOU" problem. There is OHP for your staff, by the way. My guess is some are on it, and this is double-dipping. I hate having the wellness charge on my bill, and my wife and I avoid returning to spots that have it. I know it's optional, only if I have to go thru the inconvenience and uncomfortableness of making my server go get it off the bill and reprinted.

I wouldn't feel this way if you brought it to each table's attention, presented it as an option, and went from there. The fact that it is silent, and I'm sure goes unnoticed by many is what really disturbs me.

Restaurant wellness charges just put on your bill: ONE of the things about good 'ol liberal Portland that I can't stand.

Food was fine. The potions were small and everything was alacart and for the prices you paid for it not sure we will go back to it. The wine selection was great though!

Overall very good. I especially enjoyed the cocktails and the wine list. The food was very nice, but they serve grass fed beef, which just never ever is really tender. Had a T-bone steak. Great flavor, cooked just right, but a bit tough.
Would not order steak there again.

They were out of their special menu items so we were delighted to have the waiter make suggestions for us. Everything was delicious! From the oysters to the carpaccio to the steak. Fantastic. The chef only makes a certain amount of cuts. I like that. Get in early to grab those special menu creations.

Had a wonderful meal while visiting Portland with family. Food was terrific - especially the steaks. Our server, Ally, was fantastic - she put up with a boisterous group with good humor and patience. Will definitely go back if I ever find myself in Portland again.

food was good but expensive. $24 for 2 scallops was a bit much. Extensive wine list but also too expensive We paid less for the same bottle of wine at a top New York City restaurant jus 2 weeks prior

Wonderful meal with friends. Duck meatballs are not to be missed. Fried chicken with honey - delightful. Rib-Eye was fantastic. Our server was wonderful. She took the time to talk over the menu with us, suggested cocktails based on what we like to drink and suggested a fabulous wine for our table.

We love Imperial. The first time I came, I ordered the fried chicken and it is so good that I order it every time. The other entrees are probably equally good, but to find good fried chicken in Portland is such a rarity, I crave it. Side dishes and salads are unique. I also love the desserts and they have an excellent drink menu.

We dined early (at 4:15pm) and the kitchen incorrectly provided a happy hour portion instead of the dinner portion to my date. The waiter handled it well, and we were given two small additional plates. By mistake, we ended up with a variety of amazing dishes at no extra charge to us. My date even said his fried chicken was the best he's ever had - and he is SUPER picky! Definitely coming back
