This used to be an amazing little place, a real find in a neighborhood of great restaurants. I understand it had recently been sold and while the menu hasn't changed much the food is just not up to it's old standards. The bar is just plain lousy, get a bartender who knows how to make a martini for gosh sakes! While we're not part of the young glitterati, we do spend money at restaurants regularly so please treat us like you value our patronage. I will probably give them one more shot, but the prices seem to have gone up with quality dropping so they'll really need to redeem themselves.

It was Santa Saturday in San Francisco, so plenty of people on the streets. Reservation paid off as we were seated immediately. Waiter was very knowledgable, attentive and helpful. Shared small plates amongst three people. Plenty of variety and prompt service. Liked the temparillo wine we shared with the meal. We'll be back again.

We were surprised at how sparse the scene was at 9pm on a Saturday night given the truly excellent food. Maybe it was just an off night, but IMHO these guys deserved more customers. The food was outstanding!

We were greeted and seated immediately, thanks to the reservation. It took twenty minutes before we were even acknowledged by a server and I was just about ready to leave. No bread, no water, didn't even stop by to say hello. Everything was fine once things got rolling. The food was good and we had fun. The sangria and the bacon-wrapped plums were especially good.

I've eaten at Iluna Basque many times and always enjoy my experience. This night however, was a little different. With the recent sale of the restaurant, there was a different feel to the restaurant. There was no hostess and only 2 servers for a fairly busy Wednesday night. We had to wait about 20 minutes for a table and at least another 20 to order. We had to ask for bread and olives more than once. As usual, the food was excellent, but one of the items we ordered (pairs with brie) never arrived and we had to bring it to the server's attention twice to have it removed from our bill. Another odd thing was that one of the co-owners, Sonny, seemed shocked when we mentioned the recent sale, as though he did not know about it.

A group of 3 women for dinner after an early show. Ordered a number of small plates and we enjoyed almost all of the them (one or two just weren't as good as the others). Service a little disjointed--2 waiters who didn't seem to know what the other had done. But we really enjoyed the food and would eat there again.

My niece and I had a wonderful selection of Tapas instead of a traditional dinner and came away very satisfied. The tapas portions were ample, but each person should order their own lamb burger and that was maybe a little to small to share.

Having just been to San Sebastien, I would say the food here is not up to the quality we found there. The menu also misrepresents some of the items. The cheese was supposed to have membrillo but only came with a dried apricot. Membrillo was brought later after we questioned the order. The "gazpacho" was really a form of borscht made with beets. The shaved potatoes and potato/shrimp croquettes were excellent. They didn't have txakolina, the local drink served with pintxos. All in all an okay experience just not great. The service was efficient and they did go out of their way to address our issues.

When I made the reservation, I indicated that this is to celebrate my 60th birthday. I was very disappointed that no one from the restaurant said a word to me to that effect. Also, our reservation was for 5:30PM (during the Happy Hour), I ordered 2 Sangria which was on the Happy Hour drink list, my husband wanted red wine, we ordered house red (which house wine was listed as Happy Hour drink), when we got the bill, he was charged for $12 x 2 for 2 glasses of red wine. We asked the waiter, he said house wine only includes Riesling, which he ever point out to us when we placed the order. The food was good, but I am more than disappointed about the restaurant. We saw a notice on the window about changing ownership, maybe that's why.

Check the online menu before booking here. We found the range of prices for the entrees, as well as for the tapas, quite reasonable. We thought the serving size of the small plates (tapas) could be a bit larger and easier to share. However, everything was quite tasty. Especially recommended: seafood paella with Spanish saffron rice. It is served piled high with seafood and piping hot. This restaurant may be changing ownership soon, so I urge you to book soon! There just aren't enough Basque restaurants in the Bay Area.

Our waiter really hated his job and really wanted us to be clear on that. And there were far too many tables crammed far too close to each other -- in an empty restaurant. That should be a clue, Iluna Basque. Food was fine, but will not be going back.

Decided to try this restaurant based upon a Groupon promotion. Parking on a Friday night can be tough in North Beach but the parking gods were smiling on us that evening. It is a cute and intimate place (meaning tables are close to each other and the conversations can be loud). The tapas dishes ranged from very good (bacon wrapped plums, lamb burger, stuffed peppers, chocolate fondant) to average (potato strips and paella). Surprisingly, the paella was very bland and a real disappointment. Unless your child is an adventurous eater, there isn't much here for kids. Service was very good - very attentive without being overbearing. Would come again if I was near the neighborhood, but wouldn't make a special trip to come here.

We used a Groupon certificate of $30 for $60 worth of food and drink. The prices are fairly high, and the menu fairly limited. The restaurant was not crowded and we asked to move to a table that came vacant at the window, but were refused on the grounds that there were more people expected. By the time that we left, the table, that we had asked to move to, was still vacant. The food was ok, but not great, and without the 1/2 price coupon would have been a bit disappointing. That said, the lamb mini burgers were good, and the bacon wrapped plums were very good. Overall, we would not pay a return visit to this restaurant. There are better tapas places in the Mission, at better prices with more extensive menu choices and better service.

Perfect for early evening, view onto Washington Square-Union&Columbus area -- friendly and personable service. Very tasty Basque specialities. The pork stew special entree of the day was four star. I was very impressed with how much easier the Open Table reservation process was than a few years ago -- sooooo much easier than trying to call the restaurant before serving hours to make a reservation! And when I called the restaurant to say I'd be a few minutes late, the host knew exactly who I was.

Well, I've been going to Iluna Basque since it opened. While the menu has changed over the few years it's been open, none so much as this last change, which eliminated quite a bit of the menu. The great little Mache salad and the wonderful white asparagus are no longer offered. Nor are the lamb chops, which were fantastic. They also eliminated some of the more interesting wines. I was a little disappointed with this last experience. This has been a favorite of mine since it opened so I'm a little sad about the recent changes. The food was still very good, service was fine.

There were two of us. We had four tapas and shared an entree. Some of the dishes seemed a little bland. The portions were small. The seared tuna was excellent; the vinegar and herb potatoes were almost tasteless. Other tapas were okay and the steak bavette was good. An good experience, but not one that I'll enjoy, again.

Since moving to the city in 2007, Illuna Basque has been a spot my friends and I have regularly gone. The small plates are reasonable and delicious. My all time favorite is the pears with red wine and brie, seriously delicious. They have recently changed their menu and have added more organic options. The chef used to be on Top Chef and is usually always there in his signature red scarf. Great for a fun date with friends.

The chef needs to spend more time on his food and less time socializing with his young female patrons. Every dish that came out was bland or over-cooked, from the bacalao stuffed peppers to the poached pears to the paella. Even the fondant au chocolat was dry. We won't be going back.

We just had tapas and most of the food was very good. The scallops and the tune tasted a little like they had shared a pan with some other greasier dishes. There was a bit of an aftertastes. The scallops were a bit overcooked too. The lamb burger was excellent. We enjoyed the sangria which was strong! Service was good, but all of our dishes came out at about the same time. I like time to enjoy the two dishes on the table before having to start another. It was a good experience but in a city full of great restaurants I don't know if I'll be back.

Went here with my BF and my sister who was visiting from out of town. Overall it was a decent experience. The white wine sangria was was good, as well as a few of the small tapas we ordered. My BF and sister especially enjoyed the bacon wrapped plums. Selection of entree's was scant... and the portion size of those made it feel like they were only slightly larger tapas. That was a mild disappointment... but since we already shared three tapas between the three of us, no one left hungry. One note to the owners... the music could have been turned up a little louder... it was just too quiet in the restaurant.
