Il Vicinato Ristorante Ratings and Reviews
This authentic neighborhood gem is located in a tiny Italian neighborhood around 24th and Western. It is friendly, utterly unpretentious, cozy, and the food is very good basic Italian. The veal filet I had was the best veal I've ever had, done simply with white wine and rosemary. Their pastas are fresh and the wine list is a mix of American and Italian, all well-priced. Definitely worth the twenty minute drive from downtown Chicago.
Excellent old Little Italy establishment. Service was outstanding. My wife had pasta special with spinach and mushrooms in oil and garlic. Yum. I had the eggplant parm which was prepared un-breaded and grilled. Very good. Healthy (read huge) bread service. Waiter very informative and extremely personable. We'll be back, thank you.
Meet up with old friends at an old favorite that hasn't changed! So nice. Raw clams to sea bass....carbonara to veal were all excellent and ordered family style so all 6 of us at a nice round table got to sample a little of everything. Great, inexpensive wine, rounded out a perfect meal and evening.
We went to celebrate my wife's birthday. The wait staff was tremendously attentive and cordial. The owner seemed appreciative of everyone coming into his restaurant. You could tell this was a spot for locals. We parked and saw people leave their homes to dine here. We were able to sample wine prior to buying the bottles. Food was nothing out of the ordinary, but it did not dissappoint. We brought a birthday cake, but next time I will definitely try their desserts!
Unique tastes to familiar dishes. Proper portions and proper reduction so the sauces were not too rich nor bland. The presentation was precise. The service was superb...thank you Juan. You felt like you found out something others don't know. Afternoon to detail while being completely sincere. An air of sophistication in a quaint room. It felt just right.
We had dinner at this locale several years ago and decided to return for Good Friday for fish. The waiter was very informative and helpful to explain menu items and even suggested salmon which was very good. I failed to get the name of the waiter but he served in the bar area. Will definitely return.
Il Vicinato has been a favorite of my wife and mine for many years. The chicken vesuvio is truly worth travelling for: the garlic, the olive oil, the flavor explosion, the crispy but tender meat and all for a very affordable price make it an original. But the main reason for our visit was the carbonara, I had been thinking about it for weeks since a friend had mentioned it. Theirs is "authentic": no cream!! I spent a college semester in Rome many years ago when I was first introduced to "real" carbonara: eggs, chunks of pancetta and parmigiano reggiano with spaghetti. Since then it is almost impossible to find here in the U.S. since most restaurants want to "Americanize" it by adding cream. You get the "real" deal here. Yet if one insists on adding cream to it, like any great Italian restaurant they will prepare it for you. In fact if you can describe even vaguely what ingredients you like in your pasta, they will make it. Not too many places will do that for you! Great selection for wine from least to very expensive. Reason for the "very good" instead of overall "outstanding": waiter though very attentive, asked how much I wanted to spend for a red, full bodied wine. I told him around $50 and he came back with a $60 bottle. Sure I could have declined and he did "upsell" me but I felt a little bit on the spot. However, it was delicious! Nevertheless when leaving my wife gently ribbed me on how easily I went over our wine "budget" for the meal. Vicinato is still one of my favorites. Unpretentious and all about the food!
We ordered the breaded zucchini which had almost no flavor. My daughter's spaghetti was super thick tasteless noodles with meatballs that had a very odd texture. I ordered the pasta Arrabiata and it was very heavy and dripping with oil. I could only eat a little because of the heaviness of the dish. It wasn't very spicy either.
The good part was that wait staff was excellent and they have a decent poor on their wine. I was hoping for better based on other reviews.
My boyfriend and I had New Year's Eve dinner here. Everything was WONDERFUL! The bread was great, the wine was wonderful (I had a sweet red), the food was delicious, even my boyfriend could not stop drinking the water, it was so good! I had the homemade gnocchi with meat sauce and he had the chicken Parmesan. I picked off his plate (as any girlfriend usually does) and it was the best chicken park I have ever had! The restaurant is smaller and somewhat cramped but the atmosphere was still great! I highly recommend!
Il Vicinato is great for traditional, reasonably-priced Italian. Our table had the shrimp appetizer, calamari and twice-baked clams, all great. A friend and I shared the seafood and black fettucine - more than enough for the both of us. They are noted for their veal ravioli, which is excellent. The wine list is reasonably priced as well and our server, Vin, was attentive and pleasant. This is a great place to meet friends as it is conversation friendly.
