Specializing in the fabulous flavors of the Amalfi coast, selections include delicious risottos, osso bucco, specialty pasta, as well as more exotic fare like roasted lamb garnished with balsamic vinegar and rosemary. Delectable home made desserts along with an extensive wine list. Soft hand-painted ochre colored walls, sensually sweet background music and attentive service provide a memorable dining experience at this distinctively chic restaurant. My wife and I took our (NYU student) daughter there on a Saturday night while in town for the weekend. It was fabulous - warm atmosphere, attentive and yet relaxed service, incredible pasta dishes (my new favorite), great bread, a comp chef appetizer, perfect portions, delicious cappuccino, comp biscotti, I could go on! We will return!
Burrata appetizer was sour and couldn't finish it. Branzino was very dry and tasteless, and the salad it came with tasted horrible. Service was prompt but attitude was abrupt. My friend didn't like her seafood medley - was very dry. We've dined there in the past but won't return.
The menu (and prices) have changed at the restaurant since last year, and not for the better in my opinion. Favorite dishes have disappeared and the replacements are not as good, although the prices are a bit higher. What had been a better than average neighborhood place is now simply average. With all of the choices in the area, being average is not enough.
We were 3 friends trying Il Riccio for lunch during restaurant week. The setting is pleasant, a bit rustic, but bright and airy - made more so, when I attended, by the sparse afternoon crowd. Three of us ordered everything offered on the restaurant week lunch menu including desserts. Tomatoes in a salad were typically cardboard; something a more careful kitchen would avoid serving. Almost everything else was decent but uninspired - in preparation and presentation. Tiramisu, ordered by two of us, tasted stale as if it had sat in the refrigerator for a week. One bottled Peroni and two glasses of house wine rang up at $33.00, a disappointing surprise. Service was adequate but without any effort to ingratiate or charm. None of us plans to return.
I've never had a bad experience at Il Riccio, and I've been coming for many many years.
On this occasion, dinner with old friends visiting NY, we sat in the back glassed in "garden" and that was lovely. Service is always friendly, reliable and professional. Among other things, we had a nice bottle of rosé, delicious burrata appetizer, good pastas, and branzino. It was a most enjoyable evening.
We had never been to this darling Italian right in our neighborhood, Upper East Side. The decor takes me back to finding a quaint little restaurant in the smaller towns of Italy. The food was quite good, nothing with crazy ingredients and nothing incredibly unique, but your basic authentic traditional Italian dishes. The fritto mixto was quite good, not too much batter to take away from the taste of the shellfish and the shellfish were fresh. The artikchoke salad was nicely done. The services was also good, though the Maitre D' had a little bit of an attitude, but once again made your feel you were in an authentic Italian restaurant as he still provided the service.
Although I live in the neighborhood, I hadn't been to Il Riccio in person in over a year. I had done home delivery several times. With the delivered meals it seemed portions were smaller and sauce wasn't as good. Anyway when I went with a friend recently I discovered it had been redecorated. When I inquired further, I was told it was under new management. I do think the food and service were better before the change. However it's still a sweet space, convenient and cost effective by New York standards. I would recommend it.
