About Il Porto
Every dish at Il Porto Ristorante in Alexandria, VA is made from scratch, on premise, including our pasta, all fresh, every day! Il Porto Ristorante was established in Old Town Alexandria in 1973. While its roots are traditional Italian, in recent years, there has been a transition to modern cooking techniques led by Chef Miguel, as well as focus on offering a wide range of wines, many by the glass, at a very good value.
Il Porto uses lots of fresh herbs and creative spices and we believe how you butcher the meat, how you grill a vegetable or protein in a particular way, makes all the difference to a dish.

Il Porto Ratings and Reviews
I took my daughter here in the summer time and it was awesome. I figure I would take my wife and other daughter. It was on the day of the Christmas Parade and Boat Parade. I made reservations late. I called ahead to make sure they had gluten free pasta for my wife. They did and she was thrilled.
We got seated right on time. The place was packed. We ordered our meals at 8:10. At 9:10 our waiter came up to us to say that they ran out of gluten free pasta. What a disappointment. She was really looking forward to it. They were very nice about it and offered chicken and fish. She really didn’t want that but she was hungry and it was late so she settled for the Salmon. They comped her dinner but she was still upset. My dinner and my daughters was great but the long delay between ordering and then coming out an hour later to say they were out was mystifying. Why do long? We vowed to give them another chance since the other meals were good. Just don’t go during a busy time.
We were very rushed by waiter, food was served too fast. Bread service came after salad. No one came by to offer grated cheese to top our meal. That’s pretty standard for an Itakisn restaurant. Food was just mediocre.
Not the Saturday night dining experience we are accustomed to. They just wanted us out quickly.
Sorry - do not recommend.
Went for our anniversary. Got stuck in brutal traffic, staff was very accommodating and held our reservation. No one made us feel rushed despite our delayed arrival. Food was excellent and my wife enjoyed one of the best fettuccine alfredo dishes she's had -- sauce was impeccable and pasta cooked perfectly. Neat history to the building. A lovely dining experience.
This was a delicious Italian restaurant in the heart of Alexandria.
My husband, 14 and 11 year old sons and I enjoyed a lovely evening meal there and felt well cared for and any request was honored. Service was exceptional.
I am 100% Italian and thought the pasta was fabulous as did my whole family and we all got different dishes.
My mother taught me that licking my plate is not acceptable; I had to struggle not to do just that in this quaint and cozy restaurant! In the heart of Alexandria, perfect location, historic feel, and amazing food! And did I mention they have the most delicious bread? Will make this a spot for dinner whenever I’m in town!
Excellent fresh pasta dishes. My daughter loved her lamb chop dinner. I had the seafood pasta special with lobster. The lobster was overdone and the mussels didn't seem fresh but the pasta and broth with it was delicious. Service was a bit slow despite a few diners on a Sunday evening. I have to get someone's attention to get my check. We ordered the fresh angel hair pasta with their light red sauce. That was refreshing with all of the julienned fresh (not frozen, Thank God!) veggies mix in it.
Recommended by our son and daughter in law after they’d had lunch there the same afternoon. It was lovely ambiance, wonderful service, and delightful hearty authentic Italian food. Raviolini, lasagna, fettuccine Alfredo all delighted. Portions are ample and the bread yummy!
Excellent food, great service, nice setting. We tried this establishment for the first time on a Saturday night. The King Street area was absolutely packed with folks walking about, so we were very happy to have made reservations. We were seated right away, in a really nice quiet “nook.” Delightfully, we were able to talk with and hear each other, even though the place was really packed.
The quality of the food was absolutely excellent – throughout every course. We started with a really fresh mixed salad with house made dressing. I had the veal picatta, which was very good – but could have had a touch more lemon. Mrs had the Gamberi alla Marinara, which she said was excellent. Both had excellent wine. Desserts included Tiramisu for her and Limoncello Truffle for me. Both excellent.
TIP: There are two parking garages on Union Street, across from the Torpedo Factory Art Center.
Il Porto was a lovely place, a little noisier than I expected, but still very quaint and pretty. We were given a table downstairs with a nice view of the street in Old Alexandria. The service was pretty good - occasionally a little slow - the food however was deliciously prepared. We ordered the special fish dish of the day and it did not disappoint. The fish was flaky and moist. Salads were fresh and tasty as well. The restaurant is one you should not miss if you enjoy Italian!
We were accommodated into a nice romantic table for 2 in front of the 2nd floor window. Felt special when we walked in the door, the host noted that he had reserved a romantic table for us, which was cute. Our server was great, effervescent, consistently polite, checked in frequently but not too much, really good and knowledgeable, made our experience feel upscale. Really enjoyed our dinner, felt whisked away into a romantic evening with my boyfriend. Thank you il Porto for creating magic around us. Food was great, wine lovely, even dessert as we felt like it was a mini escape... Loved the ambience!
A great dinner experience! We booked a table through Open table and asked for a quiet setting to celebrate our 33rd Wedding Anniversary - that is exactly what we got. We had a very pleasant evening with good conversation over an excellent dinner, while waited on by professional staff! We were surprised by our waiter who brought us desert to celebrate.
I was very disappointed in the value. I ordered filet mignon and eggs for brunch. The filet mignon was two small medallians (about 4 bites), 1 scrambled egg and 4 fingerling potatoes halved and roasted for $21.95. Outrageous! Il Porta must have made 1000% profit on this meal. I will not return.
Had dinner here for the first time with some friends. I was pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent. The prices were reasonable ( unusual for Old Town) $60.00 for two without the drinks. You can't eat at Landini's for twice that and, the waiters there are rude and practically through the food at you.
It reminded me of your neighborhood Italian place in New York City, only this has two floors.
The restaurant accommodates a lot of people, but it is tastefully divided into more cozy areas so you don't feel like it's a cavernous space.
Ask for the upstairs if you prefer a quieter setting. The main floor is a little noisier.
We will go back!
Our server was extremely attentive, though we had the feeling we were being nudged to finish in a certain amount of time.....but it's a difficult balance for a server and ours, though polite and helpful, was very young and perhaps still learning. He suggested a good wine. Our salads were quite vinegary with no real flavor and seemed thrown together. We enjoyed our entrees to a point, but the rib eye steak was full of fat, even for a ribeye, very thin and slathered with a salty red wine sauce. The accompanying risotto with slivered fresh vegetables was the best thing on the plate and the fresh bread was warm and tasty. My husband had Veal Oscar and said it was just okay. We decided to skip dessert. Hopefully, others have had better experiences and the many good reviews suggest this.
The great evening started with the Host. Very friendly and so happy to have guests. Waiter was personable and timely. Not too pushy.
Food was .....just perfect is taste and portions.
Fair pricing for a good meal.
Terrific house wine by the glass.
Will be back!
