Il Palio Ratings and Reviews
Our visit was for Thanksgiving. We have eaten here before for Thanksgiving and were pleased. This year, the food was fair, which was disappointing since the cost of meal was $70 per person. The salad which I asked to have the dressing on the side was overly dressed in a creamy dressing, the short rib (which is a fatty cut of meat) was overly fatty sitting in a creamy polenta. I was disappointed. We don't mind paying for a good meal but thought this was not a good value for the price.
We thoroughly enjoyed the Thanksgiving dinner- the set menu of various items per 4 courses was excellent as we do not like to go to buffets for special days like Thanksgiving. Our waiter was exceptional and service overall was terrific.
Great food, great service, great restaurant.
We had perfect evening and dinner at Il Palio. Our party of four ordered four different entrees--all of them were delicious The pasta special with shaved white truffles was exquisite. Chef Teddy Diggs has taken this restaurant to new heights, and we will be back often. Thank you, Il Palio.
We had dined previously at Il Palio and had a fabulous meal so we were quite surprised by the quality of service and food on this visit. The server got one of our entree orders entirely wrong (he brought the wrong pasta) and another entree, a ribeye steak for two, was overdone (we had ordered medium-rare, the steak was much, much closer to medium) and was also quite over-salted. Of the three pasta dishes we ordered, only the gnocchi were superlative; both the tonarelli and the paccheri were disappointing (the tonarelli was too rich, the paccheri accompanied by guanciale that tasted more like fried pork rind than guanciale). The restaurant did correct the pasta order and comped the incorrect order, but it did mean that one diner in our party was without her meal while the others were eating. Not what we had in mind for a birthday celebration, and given both the cost and our expectations, a big disappointment.
Some of the items, like the chicken liver mousse and baccala bruschetta, were perfect. Same for the service. Massimo was great! Other items, like the pasta amatricianna, octopus, and dessert, were not. Something has changed. We have gone to this restaurant over the last 20+ years for special occasions and celebrations. Sadly, this will be our last visit.
Fantastic Italian food in an understated but cozy atmosphere. Il Palio nails what Italian cuisine is about: a laser focus on ingredients with elegance and simplicity. This restaurant exceeded my expectations with its food (the raddichio salad and ragu bolognese come to mind) and excellent service (and very lovely red wine list). I look forward to returning.
Best meal we have had in years! Creative and inspired cuisine by the newish chef made every mouthful amazing. From bread to desert, we were in awe. They have GF option for pasta and even had a vegetarian dish. There was a bit too much cheese on some things so I will ask next time for that on the side. We had eggplant dish and the octopus with squid ink pasta. Polenta side dish and broccoli, then chocolate desert with edible flowers. All was fabulous!
Massimo was our host and and a great host he was! Helpful, funny, knowledgeable and polite!! Being from Italy added to the credibility of his recommendations!!
Great ambience and lighting. We will be back. We were there to celebrate our 15-Year Anniversary and it was the perfect spot
We went to this restaurant for an anniversary dinner. They accommodated our gluten issues extremely well, and even had home made GF pasta -- a first for us! The service was great as was the wine. Definitely recommend -- a bit pricey, but lovely for a special occasion.
It has been nearly 20 years since we last set foot in Il Palio. In those days, it was a truly top notch restaurant, one where you felt that you had to dress up a bit to go. Since then, there have been many new upscale restaurants added to the Triangle scene, so I wasn't so sure we were going to be quite as impressed with Il Palio last night as we were all those years ago. But, yes, indeed, our dinner exceeded even our highest expectations. From the local greens salad with nasturtium vinaigrette to the swordfish that was perfectly seasoned and melt-in-your-mouth tender, everything was outstanding. Both of our desserts: the passionfruit sorbet and the espresso “copetta” (marscapone crema, coffee mouse, espresso crumble) were beyond most we've ever had. We were celebrating both my husband's birthday and our silver anniversary, and the restaurant printed special congratulatory menues for us to keep. Our waitperson was friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and generous with his time. I definitely recommend Il Palio for excellent food, service, and atmosphere.
Excellent! We hadn't been here in a while, but wanted to check out the new chef and changed interior. The food was great and the service excellent! Gone was the stuffy, sometimes snooty feel. It is now welcoming and sort of cozy while still elegant. Our server Massimo was a delight. His assistant Gabriel (first day on the job) was also a cheery addition to the restaurant. Our friends were equally impressed. We'll be back!
unfortenately the grouper we both had was not cooked through or so tough that it was not eatable. we should have sent it back. My friend who paid the bill wanted to go back to his Hotel because he had an early flight the next morning. Salad we had was excellent. Il Palio used to be excellent may be 8-10years ago. This was the first dinner in a long time that I was a guest for dinner. Too bad. I live in Chapel Hill for almost 35 years. Quality the good restaurants is high. I am afraid Palio needs a better cook!
U.K. Palio was fantastic! We went to celebrate my son's Duke White Coat Ceremony and the restaurant went out of their way to make it special - personalized congratulatory menu and decorated dessert plate. Food was outstanding and quiet, elegant atmosphere made the night special.
Our waiter, Massimo, was extremely competent and engaging. His service provided an additional element to our dining experience, which we especially appreciated for our special occasion. And of course the food was delicious, particularly the variety of pasta dishes.
We were there for a second visit, this time it was our anniversary, they treat you like family, the food was wonderful - fresh, tasty, and just the right portion size. We had four courses, with no dessert, we just wanted to sample everything, and it was all super. They print a new menu every day, based on what is available and ours had "Happy Anniversary" printed on the top - a really nice touch.
Rebirth of a legendary Italian restaurant inside the Siena Hotel was so enjoyable. Starting with the crostini samplers, 8-10 varieties, we got the beef loin juice and sea salt one as well as the chick pea one...so yummy to pair with a fine Italian red, a 2008 Barbaresco decanted and served at the proper temperature, a rarity for moist restaurants who store reds at room temperature or higher.
Then, the delightful radicchio salad toppled with fresh parmesan was a nice transition to small plate pasta dishes and then an excellent fish entree and beef tenderloin.
The service was impeccable, however, as each team member chipped in to make sure we were always being pampered. This elevated approach I haven't seen since Nobu in NYC. Very memorable and definitely coming back again soon.
