Il Mulino New York - Uptown
There’s no place like Il Mulino New York. The luxury Italian restaurant’s flagship Greenwich Village outpost initiated New York’s fine Italian dining trend and is still prized in the city’s elite dining scene. Zagat has rated Il Mulino New York as Manhattan’s No. 1 Italian restaurant for decades and has said the restaurant provides "one-of-a-kind" cuisine filled with delicious flavors, creating an "outstanding Italian classic" restaurant where "every dish is a masterpiece."
Executive Chef Michele Mazza, who hails from Naples, Italy, has proudly carried this tradition since 2003. Fresh ingredients, artistic preparation and impeccable service distinguish Il Mulino New York as one of the world’s premiere restaurants. In addition to fine dining, Il Mulino New York provides excellent off-site catering and products.
Staff was not happy and treatment changed once we ordered off the restaurant week menu. It was clear the dishes were much smaller and not as well prepared as the ones on full menu. We felt like we were rushed out of there. Very rude.
Reservation was at 8:15pm, they gave us the table at 9pm. Food took so long and it wasn’t good. It was so loud that it was hard to talk.
This was my first time trying Il Mulino! My immediate impression was that the hostess and then the female bartender were warm and friendly and accommodating. As soon as you’re seated, little plates of fried thin slices of zucchini are brought to you and a couple of slices of salami plus a good size portion of bruschetta with perfectly seasoned tomatoes. Next they serve you big chunks of fresh Parmesan sliced right at your table. George, the captain who looked after me was so helpful and efficient. He suggested the New York strip steak which was expensive but completely worth it. The restaurant was packed and tables were close but it wasn’t a problem. I must say that George truly made my evening very special with his thoughtful attention and kind demeanor
It had been a few years since I visited, but I was elated to experience that the Il Mulino tradition is alive and well. They do not rely on reputation or aura -- they still deliver at the highest level. Top-notch service, great attention to detail, and an outstanding product. The gold standard in Italian cuisine! It won't be a few years before I return. I will be back soon and often.
The R. W. menu wasn't the quality of Il Mulino food. On the Branzino, the tomato sauce was almost tasteless. As a cook myself, a more flavorful sauce is easy to put together. The mozzarella wasn't burrata, but the balsamic was excellent quality.
Love Il Mulino's complimentary appetizers: great Italian tomato salad; fried zucchini; Parmesan; sausage. Wish the food had been as good as at Prime in Soho.
The staff was excellent. The food was even better. Loved everything about this restaurant.
Did not acknowledge special event. Rushed service
Unbearably noisy. Manager refused to turn down audio, customers screamed over the music. Deafening. Kindly service, nice hors d’œuvres offered. Ridiculous prices for wine and food. Unpleasant experience.
Chose restaurant due to location and restaurant week. When the waiter brought the menus and recited all the restaurants specials he did not include the restaurant week menu. I had to ask for it. I felt like they were trying to pull a fast one on us! The restaurant is extremely loud and service was very rushed. One positive - they did remember to acknowledge the birthday celebration.
The food was delicious but expensive. Servers were not friendly but very efficient!
Très bon. Service impeccable. On a passé un excellent moment
The resturant seemed very crowded and noisy perhaps because of the Reaturant week special offer - I had requested a quiet table for business but was unable to converse with my client . The food overall was excellent however the octopus was fair at best.
Overall - I am not sure this is the Reaturant for me
1) Too crowded and noisy
2) Appeared Rushed - request menu choice soon after viewing it
3) I was asked 6 times for my choice of drinks
What a mess...I asked three servers 5 times total for bread and was ignored by each one. I was the last guest to arrive and I was late. Upon arrival, I was served my entree right away. It turned out our other guests hadn’t been served their entrees. Our server realized that all the other dinners were forgotten about. So, the server took my dinner back to serve it with everyone else when ready.
The next server came over and asked if we wanted coffee or dessert?!?! We didn’t get our dinner yet!!!!
Unorganized mess and rude staff. After they screwed up...and served us way later than even remotely acceptable...the concierge has the nerve to mention that he needed us to leave so he could serve his next table. That guy in the suit was rude, has no manners, and doesn’t deserve the job he has.
No for referral is because we were disappointed with veal entrees. We really should have sent them back as they were all dry and tough! Branzino was very good, Chicken scarpiello was not on bone and disappointing also. Best was antipasto. So two out of the three entrees available for restaurant week were very poor, so would not recommend restaurant to a friend.
Such a caring staff, lovely food and ambiance
I will return and I always recommend it to friends and business associates.
Amazing! We can’t wait to come back and enjoy the delectable foods.
Best restaurant in New York City.
Not what you would expect out of Il Mulino given their village location. It is not the same. Acceptable for midtown but not a nice weekend dinner, even on restaurant week.
The room is small and over-crowded. It's an extremely noisy restaurant. I saw an abundance of waitstaff running around in all directions, accomplishing little. We waited 15 minutes before they brought bread to our table, and they never stopped by to refill our water glasses. Two waiters brought our check, before we even received our dessert. They were totally disorganized. The food was good, but not memorable. The dessert portion was minuscule. I definitely would not recommend this restaurant.
Captain was abrupt. Waitstaff was attentive. Food is good. Not the same as downtown. Wouldn’t go back
Wait staff excellent. Made the dining experience wonderful.
Last day of Restaurant Week.. full house for lunch.. very hectic.. amiable, gracious waiters but service was unusually slow.. my fix prix entree, veal parmigiana, was pounded too thin, thus very dried out.. pear salad & desert were lovely though.
On restaurant week I would think they’d put their best out. It’s how I find my go to restaurants. If you didn’t know they had a special menu you were out of luck. 2/3rds of the diners did not request the menu. Kitchen staff carried pots of food down the aisle all thru the meal. Evidently heading to a lower level. The food was mediocre at best. The pre dining bruschetta was the best. The ravioli tasted like the prepackaged frozen entrees and the sauce was sweet. In NYC you can get amazing pasta so I ask Why? The salmon was smothered in the sweet tomato sauce so again it was evident the medium rare request wasn’t possible. The flan was excellent. As was the wine pairing. It would have been helpful to know it was two glasses, one red and one white, but the wait staff was less than communicative. I guess what prompted this review was the cocktail. When you order a specific brand of liquor and you don’t have it just tell the client. Getting a substitute and paying premium for alcohol I don’t like was unforgivable. I simply would have had another glass of the excellent Chianti. I think about all the amazing dining experiences nearby. I wish this could have been another on my list. The vacationers should watch out. It was easy to tell who was visiting and I’m sure they weren’t excited either.
I'll assume you already know this restaurant is on the pricey end. That said, I went here with a friend during restaurant week and we could have sworn the menu we originally saw online was different from what we were given (there was a steak option). In any case, once we sat down we realized we'd been bamboozled. Here's the thing, the app and dessert courses were really good. The entree is where it all went terribly wrong. I ordered the chicken dish and literally only had chicken on my plate, no sides, not even a starch or a green. To whit, I regretted ordering the caprese salad for my app because the rest of my meal had nothing to stick to. There were A LOT of workers so people were constantly coming by to check on our table. They also started us off with a few bread options, spicy olives, and salami, which were all very tasty.
The maitre d' gets the award for being thoughtless and rude. Why? After having specifically requested a table outside and calling an hour in advance to confirm this, when we arrived he told us there we none and he could not accommodate us. The words "I'm sorry" never passed his lips. We felt like we were intruding. We used to LOVE this restaurant but will never go back. It's not what you say it's how you say it.
Very expensive and overpriced. Food is very good, service was excellent.
Engaging bar and service staff. Exceptional sole tonight - both flavorful and massive. Nothing to criticize but my gracious this is pricey Italian restaurant. And I still come back, again and again.
Restaurant was great however caution on minimum price tag on wine bottle is $160 glass at $18...
Excellent service. Food was great! Will be back.
Great impeccable service. Food was excellent. Great special occasion dinner.
Can’t say enough about this amazing place! Get the meatball appetizer for sure! We all loved our food but my osso buco was probably better the one I had in Italy!!
Amazing food, service, ambiance. Every year when we visit NYC with friends this a must eat restaurant! Will never go off the list!!
It was our first time there but it will not be our last. What a charming restaurant. The food was incredible and the service was excellent.
Food is very good, wine list only includes $100+ red wines and waiters keep pouring it as fast as it is physically possible. In contrast the water does not get refilled. 20% service is added to the bill. Not the best value but still very enjoyable.
Wonderful from start to finish!
I called to reconfirm my reservation. I spoke to someone in person and all was well. Then the day of the reservation, there was no table! Was with the head of a major international bank!
Service was too fast
Food was amazing
Meh, had a weird reaction to some wine. Service was less than stellar on the recovery. Got the typical NYC “bridge and tunnel” service. If you want to spend the money, go to Del Posto.
