Il Casale - Belmont
“I loved a lot of restaurants this year, wantonly and casually, and then I moved on. il Casale was one I loved seriously; it’s a keeper. Chef Dante de Magistris and his family hit this one out of the park.” - Devra First, Boston Globe
All was good
We had a fantastic dinner last Saturday night. The wait staff was superb and the food was outstanding. Instead of looking at a menu and wondering what I would have, I looked and said how am I going to decide? I want to try everything.
The ambience in the restaurant was pleasant and the service was good. I'd say that our server didn't check on us as much as I'd like and he seemed to be distracted. The pasta was a touch over-cooked and the fried eggplant was more like fried eggplant pieces, than an actual eggplant 'steak'. I had to add salt to my dish. All in all, though, the experience was "good", not "great". I'd go back, but there's better Italian in the area.
This was an all around pleasant experience with a good menu, excellent service, and a not too busy ambience (Thursday evening). We like it better than its sister restaurant, Wellington, which is also in Belmont, in that it has a more diverse menu and more reasonably priced meals with many half portions. Certainly a go-to choice.
This restaurant, in an old firehouse, is a good choice for a young person, couple or group, or anyone who wants an excellent dining experience and doesn't recoil from high decibels. The waitstaff is responsive and efficient, personable and knowledgeable, and the food is well prepared and presented. There is no pressure to leave quickly, but conversation is a bit difficult anyway. The menu, while not extensive, is primarily Italian cuisine, though with a flair. We did not sample desserts but found the appetizers, main courses and wine list as we hoped they would be. Overall, though expensive, it's fine dining.
We had a great night out at Il Casale as the food was excellent and the service was top notch. We ordered five courses and they spaced them perfectly. The only small complaint is the wine by the glass selections are limited. Would highly recommend the restaurant.
We were celebrating our anniversary and enjoyed our evening very much!
Service had a big impact on the evening, but it was prime time Friday night. Young support staff, and a Sr waiter that did not supervise successfully. Quality food, and I will give it another go, but not at a peak time.
Il Casale Belmont is unparalleled for excellent pasta and this time our lobster gnocchetti was light, flavorful, and most distinguished, the lovely sauce let the lobster truly shine through. Excellent scallops w saffron risotto and two superb salads, very different - one kale; one green beans w hazelnuts - very fresh and with exactly the right amount of dressing. An excellent recommendation of Greco di Tufo white wine capped it off. The only disappointment: our late reservation - 8:45 on a weeknight - meant the kitchen had closed before we could order dessert!
Best pasta I've had in years. Service was enthusiastic and terrific. Ambiance with exposed brick walls was great. Can't wait to go back.
All around excellent meal for the four of us.
Good food, great service. The servers and waiter were all very attentive. We went for a birthday dinner with a young kid (we went a bit early around 5:30pm), and had a very pleasant experience. They surprised us with ice cream with a candle because I mentioned that this was for a birthday (ice cream was very good, too). Definitely interested in returning!
Il Casale Belmont: "Good" food, nicely designed space from converted fire station, excellent service, but not outstanding food for the price. Fruiti Misto, bolognese pasta were very good. Risotto with scallops was just ok, with too much lemon flavor. Tiramasu was overly chocolate, and don't bother with the cappuccino. For a few bucks more, you can have a far superior northern Italian dinner that is altogether in another class at a nearby longtime standout venue in Waltham, whose name also begins with "Il C...". (I won't mention the name.) Be warned that regular-height tables in the front part of the restaurant can be very chilly as people enter and leave the building, despite an exterior vestibule constructed outside the front door.
I know it was Valentines Day and they were looking to maximize their profits, but it was way too crowded. It looks like they added additional tables. Definitely took away from the ambiance.
one of our go-to places near our home. never disappointed. got there early for our reservations and got a seat at the bar. ended up ordering dinner at the bar and very much enjoyed the night
My server was so friendly and knowledgeable. The kale salad, winter cocktail and bolognese were excellent. We also love the bread. Always a wonderful meal.
We were celebrating our parents wedding anniversary. Everything was top notch, from the the service, to the atmosphere to the delicious food. We cleaned all our plates.
Everything about this restaurant is fantastic, except for the most important aspect - the main courses. The drinks are exception: service spot-on, but it always seems like the chef is trying too hard -adding too many spices or sauces that kills the basic flavor of your fish or meat. A few of the pastas are fantastic, in particularl the carbonara and bolognese. However, the main courses, in particular the seafood - lobster and scallops were expensive and tasteless. The risotto that accompanied the scallops was not cooked through and the breaded scallops tasted chewy & fishy. I will only go back to sit at the bar and indulge in their cocktails.
Excellent evening - great service - will definitely return.
Best fresh pasta I've had in a long time. Lovely, warm atmosphere with great service. Everything on the menu is excellent.
Excellent service. Fantastic food.
Our waiter was excellent. As was the Manhattan. Yum.
Excellent service and food as always. The tomato sauce is absolutely amazing.
Nice food, great location
Favorite nearby restaurant - great food and service!
Food is mainly excellent. High quality ingredients, beautiful, preparations, talented chef and line cooks. Veal was sadly tough, which lowered my rating to 4 stars, but otherwise 5 stars for food. Unfortunately, the service is pretty terrible. Slow, unfriendly, even downright rude. For a restaurant of this high quality, why don’t you invest in a high level of service? I don’t get it. And this wasn’t a one-off. It’s like this every time I go with a party of more than two people. I LOVE the food and ambiance at this restaurant, but brace myself for being treated badly every time I go.
We were well taken care of
Excellent food and service.
Highly recommend! The food and service was exceptional! Thank you for making my birthday special!
I am a private chef. I’ve cooked for high profile and high net worth individuals around the world. I often opt to cook for myself rather than dine out because - especially if it is Italian(I am Italian) I’m usually disappointed.
Il Casale is a rare gem. Our dinner was outstanding. Fresh, impeccable ingredients cooked to perfection. Bravo!
The food is delicious, our waiter was very attentive, love the vibe.
Because it was Sunday night, we were able to enjoy a truly leisurely dinner. After cocktails, we ordered 3 appetizers: burrata, crostini di tonno and Il Casale Palle. All three were delicious. The entrees we ordered varied; ravioli, scallops, shrimp, risotto and everyone enjoyed their dinner. Dessert, coffee and tea rounded out an enjoyable dinner celebrating my daughter's birthday. Eric the waiter was excellent and we really enjoyed being able to take our time through dinner.
We have been to Il Casale several times and have never been disappointed.
Food itself is very good. Purely in terms of taste, it's a 4/5; fried calamari and pasta with squash were very good. Pasta with mushroom sauce (I can't remember the actual name) was good. Two gnocchi dishes were so-so. Kid's big macaroni with oil and cheese sauce was pretty good. Even though the food didn't always hit the spot for me, you can tell it's quality fresh homemade pasta and sauces. My main gripe is that the website menu wasn't honored. For the fanciest restaurant in the town center of a relatively upscale suburb of Boston, you would think they'd completely honor the more GENEROUS version of their own menu, whether it's on their website or printed down. That tiny fail in customer service bothers me and makes me wonder what other corners they're cutting. To be specific, the online menu on their own website says kids' meals come with free fries and a salad. The server informed us that this was not correct, and the printed menu confirms this. I had to ask if they'd honor their own website and the server hesitated, which is problematic, but did offer free fries but not the free salad. So, I give them a 4 out of 5 overall; good food and they made up for part of their own website fail. But why don't they toss in the salad (pun intended)? It's such a small cost compared to the hint of stinginess it imparts upon a group of 5 customers. Concretely speaking, we have no plans to return to Il Casale. I'm not trying to be bitter or unforgiving, but if you're a pricey three-dollar-sign restaurant, you should try to give every reason for the customer to return, and that is something Il Casale did not do.
The dining experience was excellent from the attentive server to the food. The server was very helpful in navigating the menu which resulted in selecting great food choices.
It was a Sunday night and the service was slow. The food was great but it came out cold. We neared with it but it was not as good as it could be if it was hot.
Great ambience and absolutely exquisite food! Our favorite place for special occasions.
We chose Il Casale for our Christmas Eve dinner and celebration of the holidays. Our family has frequented this restaurant before and have always enjoyed the experience. I ordered the prix fixe menu developed specifically for the occasion. Every course was lovely, made with care and yummy! I would definitely recommend Il Casale and we plan to go again in the new year!
Christmas Eve spectacular! An annual dinner may now be at Il Casale. We had the best dinner, from burata to fresh green salad, perfectly dressed, to amazing and beautiful main courses. We enjoyed the seafood mains the most (special scallops & lobster & rock shrimp with pasta), with veal coming up third. All were enjoyed, but the seafood was relished. Service was attentive, and the whole experience was lovely. Thank you!
We have ate at the bar the past 3 Christmas Eves and we love this place .. it is always consistently perfect in atmosphere, food quality and service
