il Barone Ristorante
The Orange County Register’s Brad Johnson states; “Il Barone actually has a soul. The cooking is solid and precise, steeped in tradition and clearly weighted with heart and experience.”
Chef Francesco Barone has created a menu representative of his Italian heritage which emphasizes fresh high quality ingredients prepared with care and served in a modern and elegant atmosphere.
Food was excellent!! Service was a mix. I think it may have been an off night. Going again soon. Drink order was wrong and dessert came to the table wrong. They made up the drink mishap with a free drink , which was great.
Server was great but overall service was slow. Sat for 20 minutes without water. Food was stellar and the server was great. Kitchen was show. Very busy the night we were they’re with a huge party, but that should have been planned for.
Overall we will go back. Hopefully it will improve
It seemed off last night service was slow perhaps understaffed also the server failed to mention that the gratuity was included in the check and we hadn’t noticed it on the menu, I think this should be mentioned.
Retirement dinner and the staff went all out.
I say stick with the pasta, but that’s just me.
One of my favorite restaurants when I’m traveling to Orange County! Try to get there 3-4 times a year and I live in Chicago!
My wife’s bithday
Never isn’t a wonderful night out.
Went for New Years Eve Dinner! Really good and tasty food, but service was lacking. Debating if I will give it another try or not.
Excellent. Very friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient waitstaff. Food excellent, as were the mixed drinks and wine recommendations. Not inexpensive, but perfect for a special occasion.
Franco is an AMAZING chef! The food was fabulous as always!
Food was delicious and service was excellent. Will be back soon!
Have been coming here for years. The food and service are always outstanding . Although we live the majority of the time in Phoenix these days we always make sure we stop in whenever we are back in the OC. Donatello always greets you as if you are family and Chef Franco has always delivered. The addition of the pizza oven makes for a wonderful appetizer and the dry age meet locker ensures you get a fabulous tasting cut of beef.
First time visiting their new location, much nicer place and the same friendly staff, but they seemed a little under staffed. Food was not they used to be. Grilled Octopus appetizer was excellent but seabass special was bland, beef stew was very average, and linguine de mare was overcooked. Spaghetti bolognese was still exceptional. Maybe they need more time to adjust to the new place. Will try them again in couple of months. Hope its better next time.
Very enjoyable visit and delicious meal. This new location is much brighter than previous one. Excellent service!
Great food, service was very slow. Mid to small portions. If food delivery was on time, would rate higher.
Il Barone is overpriced. While the service is good; the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the food is not where it needs to be to charge the prices they charge. North Italia is right down the street and I have taken the same team of people there several times. They unanimously liked North better. They said the food was much better, even when they ordered the same thing (Chicken Parm) at both places.
We have been to il Barone before, and we always enjoy our visits. The food is delicious and we like the restaurant very much. The only negative was that it was a bit too noisy. Perhaps a part of the restaurant can be made a bit quieter. Thank you. Merry Christmas.
Best Italian food in OC!!!
Been going here for years! Love eating here always great food and friendly atomosphere.
We love this restaurant.
The food is exceptional, and the service gets better every time we visit.
The dining room needs a little more style.
We go for the food!
We have been longtime patrons of this restaurant at its previous location and always enjoyed it. We did not
enjoy the decor in the new location, very cold and very few diners.
The most upsetting element was the server telling us about the specials never mentioning prices. My husband asked the price of a pasta special and was told it was $60. I think highlighting an entree which is so expensive for pasta without telling the cost is not good. Most people would assume that a pasta entree would have been under $30. as those on the menu were and I think would have been shocked and upset to receive a bill with this huge price tag for pasta.
Overpriced for the quality of food that we ate.
The raviolis were excellent but were cold. The risotto with seafood was very blend.
The pasta dish our friends had was average and way overpriced for the ingredients it had.
The atmosphere is more vibrant than the old location. The waitress was Italian and very warm and friendly.
We ate at the old location and for some reason we had a better experience with the food overall.
It seems like the chef is trying to make some of his dishes more trendy but they are losing the real Italian flavor that we look in an Italian restaurant.
Very disappointed in serve, food was cold, owner didn't care about the service or quality of food.
Would never recommend restaurant and will never return.
Bad experience for a special Holiday celebration.
Hosted a friend’s farewell dinner here, at her suggestion but was rewarded with painfully slow, confused service. Wrong or substituted orders both for entrees as well as beverages. Shame because the old location was so good.
Very expensive for what you get. It was okay, but nothing special. The service was good though.
Very disappointing. Service was horrible, food mediocre.
We were a group of 9 seated in private room. Everything was perfect for a little holiday lunch.
Great Italian food and nice window to see the people working in the kitchen. Great baked goods also.
First time visiting, excellent food, service and friendly. Will definitely visit again!
Disappointing after having enjoyed several dinners at their original location. Ambiance in the new setting is not so great for a special occasion restaurant and our waiter was inattentive. Although we were dining early and the restaurant was not yet busy, overall service was quite slow and items that should have been provided, such as water and breadsticks, (which were served in a timely manner to other tables) were either brought after a long wait as an afterthought or forgotten. When our salad arrived, for example, the waiter asked whether we would like pepper. After we responded affirmatively, he left to attend to guests at another table and never returned with the pepper. The waiter uncorked our bottle of wine and poured our first glass, but did not ever stop by to refill our wine glasses. The brushetta appetizer of the day was an odd combination of flavors and textures, not particularly complementary and quite pricey. Two of our entree selections were excellent, but the chef's "special" of the day that was ordered because it was recommended highly by the waiter instead of the original choice made by one of us was outrageously expensive and, in my estimation, not very special. I would give the restaurant a second try to see if the service had improved and I would only order clearly described items from the menu -- no daily specials.
They forgot to give me my leftovers to take home
Il Barone is the best for Italian food and in my opinion, fresh, always good and the staff is the best! Chef Franco always has some yummy special that you must try and please leave room for dessert!
Food was fabulous. Portions way to small.
over salted food and horrible stomach ache after dining
Everything was soooooo good! We sat in the bar area and the ONLY bad thing was the Italian music on the speakers overhead were way too loud.
The food is AMAZING 😉
The food is amazing, the service is great, the owners and servers are friendly and energetic. It is a special treat to have lunch at this restaurant. I haven't been for dinner but will do so in the near future. The specials are out of this world delicious!
For four of us, without mentioning the prices, our waiter highly recommend the chef’s specials, Porterhouse/filet for two and the turbot fish with saffron and mushrooms! We also had veal porchetta and Calamari for appetizers. The meat was good but the fish had zero saffron and couple of tiny pieces of mushroom with a very salty and watery white sauce which was a terrible dish! Porchetta was good but Calamari was tasteless, saggy and oily! We took a bottle of Amaroni red wine with us and were charged $25 corkage fee. We asked for the wine list to order a second bottle and our waiter recommended for us to have a similar bottle of Amaroni which we agreed to but he did not tell us the cost and to our surprise we were charged $125 for it!!! The steak/filet was $120 and the fish was $42 each!! We also had 2 bottles of water and one desert. Ended up with a big bill for $460, including gratuity came to $540! We would not have minded the cost as much, if at least the food was very good and unfortunately it was not! We eat out a lot and sadly we do not recommend this restaurant! Too expensive for what you get!!
They add 20% for parties of 5 or more. Anytime the gratuity is automatically added, this should be disclosed by the server when they bring the check. I received the check without the usual itemized charge detail and no disclosure. Makes one wonder.
