About Hy's Steakhouse Encore
One only needs to enter the cozy establishment to realize the extent to which Hy's adheres to tradition. The polished mahogany walls, cocktail bar, solid furnishings, and art have been lovingly maintained since they were first installed in 1962. And, with minor exceptions, the menu remains unchanged, featuring the finest Canadian Prime beef and seafood, not to mention Hy's sublime cheese toast.

Hy's Steakhouse Encore Ratings and Reviews
I am sorry to say our visit to Hys was a little disappointing.
Fred ordered a steak Well Done and it came less well done than our medium/well
steaks. So his steak had to go back and finally came after we had finished our meal. But, first they set the cheese bread on the table without a word. We
thought it was to go with our meal so it sat and became soggy. My plate had the steak
slapped on it with potatoes on the side very unattractive. It was my daughters birthday
and when her dessert came it was very uneven in the dish and a huge disappointment.
Hys definitely needs to do a much better job.
Everything was great except our party of five was seated upstairs close to the bar, which was extremely noisy, making it difficult to have a normal conversation among family at our table. Next time, I'll request a table on the main floor, which seemed to be quieter.
Great place. Took the kids to show them what real service is like. The Steaks have never been a disappointment & kids found plenty to choose from. Definitely a great atmosphere & top service. Prices are very high but for special occasions you can't beat Hys if you like steak.
Son had the sous vide Chicken & it was moist & delicious (his words). Table side service is also an added bonus (Caesar salad & Bananas Foster).
We've always liked to sit in the main room with a view of the grill (behind glass) you can ask for this when making a reservation.
I'm an old school meat and potatoes type of guy. I've never enjoyed fancy salads with weird lettuce, or gourmet type vegetables that I would likely not eat anyway. I don't care about super presentation skills if the meal is some weird concoction or fusion of things that don't seem right to me. This place was just what I needed in a world of too fancy restaurants with unsatisfying food and tiny portions.
I really enjoyed the classic Caesar salad made at my table that my dad taught me to make as a kid. The steak was cooked to perfection and staple pomme frites a satisfying side. The service was ideal and I was stuffed with a feeling of completion.
The price was a bit steep, as I wouldn't call myself upper class; however, it is a price I'm willing to pay for a meal I can relate to, feel full when done, and cooked properly without some bizarre gourmet twist.
We went for my husband's 50th birthday. There was some interesting tableside service (the waiter made our Caesar salad in front of us). My filet mignon was perfection. My husband got a huge 22 oz. porterhouse steak ($79), but it was overdone (ordered it medium rare and it arrived more medium), so he thought mine was much better. The wine was very good though expensive. The chocolate cake for dessert was fabulous. It was a more expensive meal than we are accustomed to, and it's not likely in our budget to go often (hard to justify a $300 steak dinner when you own a BBQ). But the service was outstanding, and the ambiance was lovely. A memorable experience; but wouldn't recommend for light eaters, as everything on the menu was old-style and heavy (one of their top-loved items was a very greasy cheese Texas-style white toast, overwhipped mashed potatoes that may be powdered).
We came here for a family get together for family visiting from abroad. The price tag was a bit high but the exceptional food and service made it worth every penny. I'd recommend it for anybody looking for a fancy night out. My current favorite steakhouse in Vancouver!
PS. The Rib Steak are delicious!
This is by far the best steakhouse in Canada! My only complaint is that they don’t have a location in Edmonton!! So I either have to drive three hours to Calgary or fly to Vancouver. Hys please open a location in the ice district! Or right on Jasper ave!! I need cheesy toast!!!
Lucky for us we had gift cards, because if we had to pay for it ourselves, I would have been very disappointed. The service was great. The steak (rib eye) was tasteless. The caesar salad, all you could taste was the garlic. The asparagus was pretty much not done so it was cold and raw. It was a busy night, but waiting for 45 min for a drink is unheard of. Lucky for us we weren't in any rush and had time to kill before meeting up with friends. It might have been an off night, but I don't think we will be returning.
We came from the states to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary at Hy's Steakhouse and let them know ahead of time. Excellent greeting accompanied with well wishes. Our waiter seemed inexperienced and nervous; forgetting both the evening specials and the prices. Started with the Cheese Toast (outstanding) and then we each had a wedge salad. Here's where a more experienced waiter would have been helpful, by suggesting we split a wedge salad, because they are large. So we each stopped eating halfway through. Taste was great, though. I ordered the medallions (medium well) and my husband ordered the seafood trio (evening special). Of the four steak dinners I enjoyed in Vancouver during our stay, I would rank Hy's last. Over-cooked and tough. My husband liked his seafood trio - cooked just right. The waiter offered to tempt us with desert menus, but we passed. I was half expecting a celebratory slice of cheesecake for us to share since it was our anniversary, but the offer was not forthcoming. Most expensive restaurant we ate at during our stay, but ranked last on our list (also ate at CinCin's, Cardero's, and the Catcus Club Cafe).
Over the years the food has declined and the value is absolutely non-existent absolutely overpriced $70 for a steak is absurd. Lack of dresscode is very disappointing. There there is nothing special about hys anymore they are now just an overpriced keg. the rib steak was flavorless and under seasoned the french fries were simply McCain super fries bring back shoestring fries like the good old steakhouses of your I don't believe that this is what your founder Envision for 2017
As always, the food and the service at Hy's was outstanding. Our waiter James was am absolute delight and the food and drink was delicious. I'm a long time fan of Hy's. In a city where most restaurants are trying so hard to be trendy and modern, I love that Hy's has always felt classic and of another era. This is why the only issue I had was the GOD AWFUL nu jazz/lounge music that took away from that ambience that I have long loved. I've heard better music in the elevator of a Holiday Inn. PLEASE Hy's...stay true to your traditional roots and instead play some Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Ella, Coltrane...I am begging you.
I invited my friends to this restaurant showing my appreciation to them. The food itself was not that bad, but after the payment at table, the server pointed at the total amount on the receipt and forced me to make sure how much I paid for tip, which I never experienced anywhere else... I was very shocked that the server did such a thing in front of my friends... The server also counted openly how many gift cards I used for the payment in front of my friends, which I wanted not to let them know... What the server cared about was only tip, he didn't care to get the customer embarrassed and ruin the customer's special occasion. Before the server left our table, he said sarcastically "Thanks for **% tip!" I still cannot believe what I experienced at this high class restaurant...
We are planning to have our Company Christmas Dinner in the private room upstairs and wanted to check it out before hand so I setup a business meeting lunch. First it was great to find parking right next to the restaurant. The décor is elegant steakhouse style, relaxing, comfortable. The service was top notch. The food was delicious, have to try the tasty Caesar salad and Cheese Toast and the steak sandwich was perfect for lunch. We were in and out of there in 45 minutes which was great for a business lunch. We were there on a sunny day and it was fairly busy so if it's a rainy day I'm sure it will be busier. All in all good value, great service, great food, easy parking and now I'm looking forward to our Christmas Dinner!
