One only needs to enter the cozy establishment to realize the extent to which Hy's adheres to tradition. The polished mahogany walls, cocktail bar, solid furnishings, and art have been lovingly maintained since they were first installed in 1962. And, with minor exceptions, the menu remains unchanged, featuring the finest Canadian Prime beef and seafood, not to mention Hy's sublime cheese toast.

Hy's Steakhouse Encore Ratings and Reviews
Predictably good experience. It was likely my thirtieth visit to that Hy's and I have yet to be disappointed.
Fabulous service, wonderful food, out server’s wine knowledge was superb. We had the Caesar salad, Prawn cocktail, and both had the special. I have mostly great things to say about the experience.
Meat was top end, mashed potatoes excellent. My parents were mildly disappointed with the chateaubriand; the lack of juices in the pan meant the vegetables were more charred than seared with flavour, and the presentation was interrupted. Mom prefers soft vegetables rather than al dente as well, though that’s not the dish here. They also noted the plate seemed rather empty of veg for the prices. I was happy, personally (hard to have an empty plate with 22 oz of porterhouse filling it!). I enjoyed, but for these prices, it should be a meal we talk about with fondness for months, and it won’t be, alas.
I go to Hy's once or twice per year and am never disappointed. It's a really "old-school" steak house, dark, quiet, and cozy, with superb service and delicious steaks and sides. Their cheese-bread appetizer is justifiably famous and a must-have every time I go!
Everything during this visit was well done. Attention immediately upon entry, good coat check, impeccable service and food. Highly recommend the cheese bread and the bananas foster.
Our server Kim was exceptional! Food was great, drinks we great! Only thing I note is that it seems higher priced than Whistler or Calgary Hy’s...might just be my memory but things seemed more expensive in downtown Vancouver than my recent visits to other locations. However, food and service was absolutely up to all expectations for quality!
The service, the experience, the ambiance all culminated into a fantastic evening. From the minute we walked in to the restaurant until the minute we left, the overall experience was fantastic.
The meat (aged beef) was a bit tough and slightly overcooked. The gorgonzola on the filet mignon was terrible. The fries good but not the same as say 10 years ago. The key lime pie was fantas
Our server Kim did a wonderful job. Old school steakhouse food done to perfection. If you miss Mad Men you’ll enjoy Hy’s. Great food, great service. We’ll be back again the next time we are craving a perfect steak and channeling Sterling Cooper.
Service, unusually, was not up to par. It took a long time to get our cocktails which arrived just as the meal was being served. They got the meal order wrong, and it took quite some time to get the server's attention so the order could be fixed. At the end of the meal, it took several requests and then more than ten minutes to get a card processor machine to pay the bill. For a regular and known customer, all this is simply unacceptable.
As usual the entire Hy's dinning experience was "world-class". I've been dinning there since the early 70's. Always impressed with the service and quality of the food. My "go to" option for business or pleasure.
Hy’s Is usually great but the kitchen was a bit off on this particular visit. Steaks were very underdone, two of us ordered steaks cooked medium and was it was served blue rare and the chicken dish was over cooked and dry.
The waiter, who moved to Hy's Vancouver from Hy's Calgary, was very knowledgeable and friendly. I hope when I go back that I may have the pleasure of being waited on by him once again.
We had such a great night! The food as usual was amazing! And our sever Chad went above and beyond and did such a fabulous job!
Dine in the upstair dining room...very comfortable and nice décor.
Karen our server was excellent. Overall staff provided excellent service and always enjoy going to Hy's as I have for well over 10 years
Was an absolute delight. Food and service were impeccable. Would recommend over Gotham’s Steakhouse.
I am sorry to say our visit to Hys was a little disappointing.
Fred ordered a steak Well Done and it came less well done than our medium/well
steaks. So his steak had to go back and finally came after we had finished our meal. But, first they set the cheese bread on the table without a word. We
thought it was to go with our meal so it sat and became soggy. My plate had the steak
slapped on it with potatoes on the side very unattractive. It was my daughters birthday
and when her dessert came it was very uneven in the dish and a huge disappointment.
Hys definitely needs to do a much better job.
GREAT!!!!!!!! as always and as ALWAYS ,BLAIR ,is the best waiter in the world.Everything was Perfect and it is a can't miss in Vancouver.
Everything was great except our party of five was seated upstairs close to the bar, which was extremely noisy, making it difficult to have a normal conversation among family at our table. Next time, I'll request a table on the main floor, which seemed to be quieter.
Great place. Took the kids to show them what real service is like. The Steaks have never been a disappointment & kids found plenty to choose from. Definitely a great atmosphere & top service. Prices are very high but for special occasions you can't beat Hys if you like steak.
Son had the sous vide Chicken & it was moist & delicious (his words). Table side service is also an added bonus (Caesar salad & Bananas Foster).
We've always liked to sit in the main room with a view of the grill (behind glass) you can ask for this when making a reservation.
I'm an old school meat and potatoes type of guy. I've never enjoyed fancy salads with weird lettuce, or gourmet type vegetables that I would likely not eat anyway. I don't care about super presentation skills if the meal is some weird concoction or fusion of things that don't seem right to me. This place was just what I needed in a world of too fancy restaurants with unsatisfying food and tiny portions.
I really enjoyed the classic Caesar salad made at my table that my dad taught me to make as a kid. The steak was cooked to perfection and staple pomme frites a satisfying side. The service was ideal and I was stuffed with a feeling of completion.
The price was a bit steep, as I wouldn't call myself upper class; however, it is a price I'm willing to pay for a meal I can relate to, feel full when done, and cooked properly without some bizarre gourmet twist.
We went for my husband's 50th birthday. There was some interesting tableside service (the waiter made our Caesar salad in front of us). My filet mignon was perfection. My husband got a huge 22 oz. porterhouse steak ($79), but it was overdone (ordered it medium rare and it arrived more medium), so he thought mine was much better. The wine was very good though expensive. The chocolate cake for dessert was fabulous. It was a more expensive meal than we are accustomed to, and it's not likely in our budget to go often (hard to justify a $300 steak dinner when you own a BBQ). But the service was outstanding, and the ambiance was lovely. A memorable experience; but wouldn't recommend for light eaters, as everything on the menu was old-style and heavy (one of their top-loved items was a very greasy cheese Texas-style white toast, overwhipped mashed potatoes that may be powdered).
Disappointing. Not what it once was. Bernaise sauce wasnt very good. And the meal and cappuccino was cold. Also charged for bread that should have been served with the appetizer. Not what we remembered Hys to be
My steak took over an hour to arrive and when it did, it was room temperature. Being that it took so long, I didn’t want to complain or send it back. My husband, however, really enjoyed his steak- it was piping hot, as it should be.
My husband and I have been dining at Hy's Encore for over 47 years? We both feel that it is the pinnacle in fine dining.
We came here for a family get together for family visiting from abroad. The price tag was a bit high but the exceptional food and service made it worth every penny. I'd recommend it for anybody looking for a fancy night out. My current favorite steakhouse in Vancouver!
PS. The Rib Steak are delicious!
This is by far the best steakhouse in Canada! My only complaint is that they don’t have a location in Edmonton!! So I either have to drive three hours to Calgary or fly to Vancouver. Hys please open a location in the ice district! Or right on Jasper ave!! I need cheesy toast!!!
