One only needs to enter the cozy establishment to realize the extent to which Hy's adheres to tradition. The polished mahogany walls, cocktail bar, solid furnishings, and art have been lovingly maintained since they were first installed in 1962. And, with minor exceptions, the menu remains unchanged, featuring the finest Canadian Prime beef and seafood, not to mention Hy's sublime cheese toast.

Hy's Steakhouse Encore Ratings and Reviews
Amazing food! Amazing service! Amazing atmosphere! Love it here!
Outstanding. Vancouver's best steakhouse, hands down. Steaks were cooked to perfection. Service was impeccable, and I don't mean that lightly. Go for house specials: Cheese bread and the Caesar Salad, prepared tableside. That said, this is a pricey restaurant, but it was a celebration, so worth it.
An intimate birthday dinner that was warm and cozy because of the ambiance, snd, we sat at a nice little corner nook. The cheese toast was delicious. My steak was done perfectly. And my yummy brûlée was presented to me with a lit birthday candle in it. No loud embarrassing birthday song . Just a relaxing fun and very tasty dinner.
I really enjoy Hy’s generally but our lunch was dreadful. Brown lettuce for the Caesar salad which is inexcusable. Steaks tasteless . The liver and apple crisp were excellent.
Best steak in the city, everything was great as well as the service. The Caesar salad is very good, unlike any other place. Crème Brule is excellent, light and not too heavy
Hy’s steak compared to Black n Blue or Glowbal is inferior but still very good. I order the same steak at every place and Hy’s used to be the best but niw I have to say is third on my list. The classic ceasar salad has changed and there was way too much raw garlic this time. We had car service and 6 out of 7 of us had the salad...can you imagine how the car smelled? Even after brushing our teeth tongues we smelled like garlic. The service was impeccable and our server was just the best. We loved him so much. The outfits have changed but that’s ok. Wine was awesome but even the cheesetoast was not as good this time. The server made up for all of it and we enjoyed our evening very much. Forgot his name but he was the best ever. Veggies were great, dessert was well, ok. The server was on point, kind, not overbearing, helpful and fun. I will still go to Hy’s and enjoy it. Maybe pass on the salad and have the tossed greens instead.
We ordered the cheese toast for two and ceaser salad. They made salad lively,it was amazing and professional. The steak was also good,we ate New York steak and Lobster ,It was a wonderful combo.
I enjoyed dinner with best friends.I ate Perfect steak with My friends
But one of my friends is foodie so she wanted to eat more. Please give her more haha
Excellent service, and delicious food. Highly recommend this restaurant!
Excellent. Personable waiter, amazing food. Expensive, for sure, but this is luxury dining and worth the splurge. We got the ahi tuna appetizer, which was great, but being in Vancouver, we probably should have gotten something that we couldn’t at a regular sushi place. Caesar salad, made table side with the correct ingredients, was delicious. Cheesy bread was sooo good. Filet mignon was so tender. Wines were exquisite. Dessert: chocolate cake and pistachio creme brûlée was decadent.
Hy’s never disappoints, we have been coming for years and the food and service is always outstanding!
It is one of our all time favorites.
We were upstairs in the renovated area just beyond the bar. The restaurant was buzzing with many diners for Christmas Eve and everything was great - food, service, ambience. Really enjoyed our meal and booking again for next year !
It's always a great pleasure to be celebrating our anniversary at Hy's. From the valet service to the reception, to the servers, they're all great! We had the pleasure to be served by Blair. He's very caring and attentive to details. He gave great suggestions on wine selections as well as the menu. He was so candid and he made us feel like valued guests. We will always be coming back here. Hy's is perfection! No need to make fusion food or alter the ingredients. It's perfect the way it is!
Fabulous food, ambience and great, knowledgeable, friendly waiter. A Vancouver favourite for sure!
We had a reservation for 8 the table only had seats and settings for 7.
We ordered 3 different bottles of wine that were all out of stock before the 4th was available.
The steak special was very small and a couple of them ordered medium rare came literally raw throughout and had to be sent back. The cheese bread was wonderful as usual, however our second order came 20 minutes later, even after a reminder that seemed to be ignored.
We were told we could have coffee after our meals but only if we moved from the dining room to the lounge. This was done with little tact and felt like we were being kicked out after our 4th bottle of wine had been poured but not yet finished.
We do an annual Christmas lunch here, but will likely move on somewhere else after this disappointing experience.
We ordered the porterhouse, New York strip with peppercorn, bone-in rib steak, beef Wellington, cheese toast and Caesar salad. Cheese toast and salad were to die for. The entrees were made to order, except for the rib steak, which came out a little burnt than expected, and the bitterness overwhelmed the otherwise tasty steak. Service was good; our waiter was very attentive and my water glass was never empty for long.
I love this place. But this visit was not good. The dry aged NY strip was awful. Very disappointing. I was shocked. From a place that has served me some outstanding meals I was caught off guard. Something to avoid for sure.
I am not one to complain.
I have been going to Hy's for a long time.
The cheesy bread was excellent as always.
I ordered french onion soup and it inconsistently heated, hot in spots and cool in spots.
The lettuce in my cob salad was very poor quality and tough.
My guest ordered a filet steak and it was 6 inches wide and 1/2 inch thick.
like a sirloin, but the server confirmed it was a filet.
I tried it and it was so tough you could hardly cut and chew it.
Gratefully, the server brought a new steak which was ok but not worth the price we paid.
I suspect I will not go back as there other good alternatives in Vancouver.
First time went to Hy’s, and made a reservation with specific message: a quiet and comfy table; however was close to the entry and a big table behind me, the waiter kept kicking my chair and a bit annoying by getting really close to me. I understand there is a table behind me and he needs to serve the person and he said sorry but the table could’ve been set a bit separate for convenience. Expected a better atmosphere but didn’t really reach the expectation. Food is good.
Predictably good experience. It was likely my thirtieth visit to that Hy's and I have yet to be disappointed.
Fabulous service, wonderful food, out server’s wine knowledge was superb. We had the Caesar salad, Prawn cocktail, and both had the special. I have mostly great things to say about the experience.
We were here to celebrate our engagement as a couple on the last night of our holiday. the attentiveness of the waiter and the concierge team at the restaurant was impeccable. The restaurant were already aware of our engagement earlier that evening and the staff were very welcoming and congratulated us on our arrival. A bottle of champagne was on ice at our table when we sat down. The waiter was very relaxed with us allowing us to just sit back and have a relaxed evening with amazing food. His suggestions from the menu for food and wine were great, and the time he spent at the table with us was very entertaining.
All round great for with great service. Love our dining experience there. If ever we are back in Vancouver. We will be at Hy's
Meat was top end, mashed potatoes excellent. My parents were mildly disappointed with the chateaubriand; the lack of juices in the pan meant the vegetables were more charred than seared with flavour, and the presentation was interrupted. Mom prefers soft vegetables rather than al dente as well, though that’s not the dish here. They also noted the plate seemed rather empty of veg for the prices. I was happy, personally (hard to have an empty plate with 22 oz of porterhouse filling it!). I enjoyed, but for these prices, it should be a meal we talk about with fondness for months, and it won’t be, alas.
I go to Hy's once or twice per year and am never disappointed. It's a really "old-school" steak house, dark, quiet, and cozy, with superb service and delicious steaks and sides. Their cheese-bread appetizer is justifiably famous and a must-have every time I go!
Everything during this visit was well done. Attention immediately upon entry, good coat check, impeccable service and food. Highly recommend the cheese bread and the bananas foster.
Our server Kim was exceptional! Food was great, drinks we great! Only thing I note is that it seems higher priced than Whistler or Calgary Hy’s...might just be my memory but things seemed more expensive in downtown Vancouver than my recent visits to other locations. However, food and service was absolutely up to all expectations for quality!
