Hyde Street Seafood House & Raw Bar
Out of the bustle neighborhood find with reasonable prices and good food
Enjoyed our dinner before a concert at The Masonic. Seafood was fresh and well prepared. Service was friendly, maybe a bit slow. Overall, I’d recommend it.
Very cozy pleasant environment, nice and friendly waiters and restaurant manager. Food was prepared in a good timing and was very tasty!
What a pleasant experience! Husband and I were in town for business and had the last night to ourselves. We chose this restaurant based on its reviews, proximity to our hotel, and a desire for unpretentious seafood. It was an absolute delight. The food was excellent, as was the service. My husband particularly enjoyed the historic nautical maps and ship models. We would definitely go back if in the area again.
Let’s start with the fact my husband got sick. Then with my conclusion that with the exception of the very good oysters, everything presented was probably frozen from Costco. Caesar salad came with no dressing at all, when asked the dressing was vinegrette. The fish was served with cheap accompaniments like a spring roll exploded. The lobster raviolis were clearly filled with lobster byproducts, ie the red small leg meat in a puréed mess.
The wine list was pathetic.
I am very disappointed at the stars this place got on Open Table. It should not even be listed.
The restaurant has not been cleaned And the decor was from 40 years ago. The bathroom had a disgusting residential bath mat that was filthy. Horrible.
This has been one of my favorite go-to spots when I visit San Francisco. It is a local place, away from the tourists but easy to get to. The friendly owner and staff recognize me each time. The seafood and julienned vegetables, cooked in parchment paper is really outstanding. You can't go wrong coming here.
Been here before and it lived up to my expectations once more. A must place for sea-food lovers.
Great neighborhood space with wonderful seafood. This was a surprise - you don't think of Russian Hill for seafood, but that is what this place has and it is soooo good! Try the papillotte fish choices - they are healthy and really really good. Lots of raw bar choices as well as hot appetizers and salads as well. They have a number of specials and happy hour wine and appetizers. Very cozy place right on a cable car line. Much better than going down the hill to Fisherman's Wharf with its crowds and high prices. This is a good place to meet up with friends, but not if you're in a hurry. Definitely be back to this place - a real find!
We showed up at 4:55PM on a Sunday, the place looked closed. We walked around the block and a few minutes later the place opened up. We had happy hour oysters from 5-7PM. We were all impressed with the excellent food and great atmosphere. Definitely a gem in the city.
Great experience, food and service. My friend from Maine loved it.
I just love this place! It's my local go to restaurant. Prices are right, seafood fresh, lobster bisque the best.
And the service staff remembers you. I'll be back again and again.
Excellent food, we were one of three tables in the restaurant. Very quiet, personal dining experience
Can’t beat their Happy Hour pricing for raw oysters ... just $15.00 for a dozen. Family owned & operated, they consistently provide great food & service. This is a “must-do whenever I’m in San Francisco.
While the restaurant is located in an older residential/shop neighborhood, don't let that put you off - food is delicious. My wife had pan-seared halibut that was perfectly seasoned and I the corvina sea bass en papillotte that was also prepared very well. A neighborhood gem.
We liked the romantic ambiance. The attentive service was great! The lobster bisque was flavorful, the seafood stuffed shrimp was very rich and hearty. The rainbow trout was very good, fresh & light. We will go back to try other dishes. Fun to watch the cable cars full of visitors pass by as we dined.
The food was fantastic! Parking is a bit of an issue, but once we finally found the garage ( 3 blocks away) it was all worth it. Calm quiet atmosphere, service was great! We had a garlic shrimp and clam appetizer, lobster bisque and clam chowder, salad, seafood pasta and the garlic Dungeness crab dish. Everything we ate was absolutely delicious. I will definitely return when I’m in town.
Good food. Service a little slow but not terribly so.
We get into San Francisco about once a year and we've been including one evening at the Hyde Street Grill for several years. The seafood is always well prepared at Hyde Street Grill. Additionally, the ambiance is on the romantic side (as long as the loud local non-stop talker isn't present). My spouse's scallops were perfect and my baked salmon was delicious. We'll be back next year.
Food was outstanding and price was excellent for the quality of the service
En papillote was undercooked (same for table next to us). Well seasoned and otherwise good, but if that's your signature dish, you need to get that right every time.
Very nice neighborhood restaurant! Very good seafood.
Service was slow but friendly, but food was good.
This little neighborhood gem needs your patience and ability to eat there when it's not a Fri or Sat prime time. The owner needs to staff this with one more person on Thurs-Sat, so decide to dine early to avoid wait during the meal. If you're not in a big hurry, the mgr is adorable, the halibut incredibly moist and healthy, and the salads really hearty and cold. We loved the French onion soup. For the value, which is great, don't expect this to be high touch. Otherwise you'd need to pay another 30% on the check.
Very good food and great service.
Delicious food, nice atmosphere, good service
A wonderful fine in Russian Hill neighborhood. Food and service was excellent. A must try!!!
A lovely restaurant with great food and friendly service.
We really enjoyed visiting this restaurant. We went early evening, so it wasn't very busy yet so it was a quiet atmosphere. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. We really liked the food that we ordered and found the place to be very comfortable and cozy. We liked that it had a neighborhood feel to it. It was nice not to be in touristy area.
Had the halibut off the specials board. Disappointed with the starter we chose. Decent wine selection.
Been coming here for many years, every time we visit San Francisco. The food is consistently good, and very reasonably priced. It was very quiet when we went, which is a shame, the place deserves to be busy all the time.
We will definitely be back when we return.
We had Swordfish, scallop fettuccini, salmon and cioppino. The fettuccini and the sordfish were good. The salmon was fresh and well prepared (wrapped in parchment) but I found it very bland. But the quality of the ingredients was great. I just like bolder flavors.
The cioppino was a huge disappointment. The menu said it was in a marinara sauce. That’s exactly what it was...tasted like spaghetti sauce. Should have believed the menu.
The service was very disappointing. Our waitress was kind and offered that the service was poor because they were under staffed.
Our oysters were great.
It is a nice neighborhood spot. It just wasn’t what we were looking for and the service was so poor that it made the evening a disappointment.
We went on Valentine's Day. The place was full, but not swamped. They had some empty tables. But I heard someone else say they had only three people in the kitchen. I'm not sure what they were thinking. The service was astonishingly bad. Our waitress greeted us with a grim look and, "Are you ready?" She didn't smile. She didn't ask if we wanted drinks or if we had questions. We barely saw her the entire meal. There was a Faulty Towers-eqsue episode (an earlier review says this and it SO accurate) involving our appetizer where the manager and the waitress kept trying to shuffle the oysters back and forth between our table and our neighbors. The poor table next to us got there thirty minutes before us but were served much later, and they had to beg to get their food served at all. They had a horrendous experience and the manager wouldn't even comp their entire meal and drinks. The one time the waitress came during our meal, she asked us a question and then immediately turned away and walked off before we could answer. It was so ridiculous it was funny. If you enjoy participating in your very own live action britcom from the good old days, then you'll love this place. Otherwise, I'd avoid it.
It was truly terrible in every aspect, I want my money back! I repeatedly tried to ignore the bad things as I wanted to like this place and have another neighborhood restaurant to go to but they just kept failing big. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone ever, maybe if I had to go out to a work dinner, with people I didn’t like, and I was full from lunch, and I had hours and hours to kill.
This was one of our worst food experiences in SF in 15 years living here. When we walked in, the restaurant was only half full. Nonetheless, it took an hour to get our starter, and another 40 mins to get our main course. There was never an apology, only an explanation that "the kitchen is really small." If that's true, either have less tables, or set customers' expectations appropriately for a delay. Moreover, the food wasn't great. We asked for a medium-rare steak with the surf n turf, and yet it was completely overcooked (brown not pink in the middle). The lobster tail was very good, but everything else was average at best. And there were far too few staff who were run off their feet. I felt bad for them, but also very annoyed that management could run the restaurant so poorly.
The proprietors met us and were warm and friendly. We had the bacon wrapped scallops as an appetizer and it was delicious. I got the catch of the day (halibut) that was cooked to perfection. My wife got the potato encrusted King Salmon which she enjoyed very much. We were never rushed and we had time to talk and enjoy our meals. We would definitely go there again.
My friend and I had oysters, stuffed trout, and salmon. All excellent. Great neighborhood spot on Hyde, with cable cars going by. Wonderful local spot for over 30 years. Nice staff, not too crowded.
If you think you need more seafood in your diet, this is your place. So many choices, can probably eat on a regular basis and keep discovering new things. I hope you'll be as satisfied as we were.
The service is excellent. The appitizers and salad were great. The lobster and crab were a bit over done.
Relatively simple fare. Good fresh ingredients especially seafood.
Warm greeting and nice server, great oyster happy hour, both the halibut and ahi specials were super delicious. My regret, how have I lived in the neighborhood next door all these years & never been here before! I'll be back and bring others.
