About Husk - Charleston

Centrally located in historic downtown Charleston, Husk transforms the essence of Southern food.Led by Chef/Partner Sean Brock and Executive Chef Travis Grimes the kitchen reinterprets the bounty of the surrounding area, exploring an ingredient-driven cuisine that begins in the rediscovery of heirloom products and redefines what it means to cook and eat in Charleston. At Husk, there are some rules about what can go on the plate – if it doesn’t come from the South, it’s not coming through the door. The restaurant is as casual as it is chic, evoking a way of life centered on seasonality and the grand traditions of Charleston life. It is a neighborhood gathering place for friends, and a destination dining spot for travelers, with a little bite of the South for everyone’s palates.

Overall - very disappointing experience. We waited 25 minutes past our reservation time. Ok, we get that things run behind but it was a Sunday night. Service was marginal at best. We ordered a decent bottle of wine - over $80 - and we only poured it once after initial first pour. Food was ok, not great- not our best meal while in Charleston - let alone compares to the price. No one checked on us throughout dinner to see if it was ok- and we did order appetizers to start even.....
Not our best Charleston experience nor would we recommend it to our “ foodie” friends .

We were in town for my husband's birthday. Our server was impersonal, and didn't even ask us where we were from. He hurried through the menu options. Not friendly at all. We ordered the pimento cheese appetizer, and got 4 small pieces of bread with cheese and a little bacon on them... and it was $12! Not a good value at all, and the Pawley's pimento cheese I buy at Kroger is as good. My country fried steak was fine, the burger was good, but overall we were not impressed with the food. Above average, but not worth the $85 it cost. If the service had been a little more personal or warm, I might feel differently, but will not recommend to anyone.

Great food. But portions were small considering the prices were pretty high. Paid more, got less.

Went here to eat at "THE MUST EAT HERE" if in Charleston. The Fire roasted broccoli was cold and raw. Bread plates were removed before rolls were offered. The entrées arrived and were not to bad. I then asked the server about rolls and they were promptly delivered cold and stale.

My guess is the server initially mentioned the fire roasted broccoli as his number one favorite. After he asked my opinion and I foolishly gave it, It was like my wife and I were no longer there.

Being a better guest then the server was a server, we still tipped him well.

Really, really great food, great service, pretty place, but almost didn't go in because of 2 big rats in the front yard, thought they were cats (lol). Said something when we went in, they seemed unconcerned.

I made our reservation a month out to be sure to get to eat dinner here; in fact we timed the trip around the Husk reservation. We got baked oysters, barbecued ribs, grouper, cornbread and dessert. It was all wonderful. After we left my husband remarked that he wanted to be sure to always eat at Husk every time we come to Charleston.

As a southerner it does my heart good to see a place using old-school traditional southern ingredients in a new and exciting way. This is a gem in the crown of Charleston . Worth the drive in every way.

I have been to Husk many times and have been thrilled. This evening we were celebrating and intended to do a progressive dinner on the town while also stopping in at Husk for quite a few appitizers. We felt that our server wasn't comfortable that we wanted to share 4-5 items (we were hitting 4 places in town). It kind of made us feel uncomfortable. The smoked grilled oysters with beef fat and TN brisket was the highlight of the night. Though the Atlantic Black grouper (they split the portion in half / we didnt ask for that) was over cooked and had to send it back. The server frowned , we mentioned, knowing that the portions would had been smaller, it should had been done less on the plancha. MOD Noah gracefully comped the dish, but my hubby felt he did not sadly want to return again to the establishment. Im saddened by this.

After months of waiting and actually getting a reservation at a decent time, I was severely let down. Reception was cold and abrupt, although the server was adequate and able. Menus were printed just for us acknowledging my birthday, which was nice. The Manhattan my husband ordered was the smallest I had ever seen! Our food was edible, yet nothing amazing. We skipped dessert. We overpaid significantly for the experience. We won’t go back.

From the moment i arrived at Husk I was captivated by the authenticity of the exterior of the restaurant. Upon entering, I was further appreciative of the outstanding decor that blends traditional southern ambiance with rustic and industrial pieces. The menu options, which are created daily, made I️t difficult to choose from the variety of amazing dishes. The biscuit and gravy appetizer was creamy and delicious and the biscuit was light and flavorful. The flat iron steak and fried egg brunch entree was cooked perfectly and mixed with a variety of roasted vegetables that were equally delicious. In addition, every member of the staff was sincerely gracious, accommodating and professional. In a city of outstanding restaurant options, this is a top choice. I will definitely return on my next visit to Charleston.

My boyfriend and I were in town for a wedding I was standing in and the bride recommended that we go to Husk. She gave me the heads to make the reservation as soon as possible so I made the reservation about 3 months in advance. I decided to make the dining experience even more special by taking my boyfriend there to celebrate his birthday. We had a fantastic time. The food was deliciously amazing and came out so quickly! The service was great as well. We will definitely be returning to Charleston just to eat at Husk again.

My daughter recommended Husk's Shrimp and Grits. I thought the dish was good but not extraordinary. (I much prefer Magnolia's spicy sausage and shrimp grits.) The setting is more informal than the outside of the building suggests. Reservations are hard to get, so I thought the restaurant would have a big wow factor. It does not. Probably foodies need to go once and see if they think the restaurant deserves the hype. Good but not great.

We had lunch based on a recommendation from friends. My husband had a burger which he loved. I had fried chicken, which was just okay. The rice and broccoli mixture was delish. The special Manhattan was also a hit. So, overall a good meal. Great service as well.

This is the second time that my wife and I have dined at Husk. The first time was lunch and the food quality was excellent (shrimp and grits) and portion size was fine. The other night, we went to celebrate our 51st wedding anniversary. I had the catfish. Quality of the food again was excellent. I also ate 2 of the 3 dinner rolls and butter. My complaint was that the portion size of the entree was disappointing...very small. I am not a big eater and this is one of the few times that I have left a restaurant still feeling hungry! If the entree size had been about 30% larger, I think that would have been fine.

This was not the restaurant for us and we may be unique. My husband is allergic to oranges and many of the dishes had orange juice incorporated into them. After two trips back to the kitchen to ask about salads, the chef finally said he could make something up (and it was good). Since it is a relatively limited menu, this impacted our experience. My duck confit was really good and our server was excellent. There was also no New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc - we tried two other offerings but weren't really thrilled with either. Because of the great reviews, I assume that Husk just wasn't a match for us.

Husk was the most disappointing, underwhelming and overpriced restuarant we ate at during our 5 days in Charleston. We dined at all the top spots for lunch and dinner every day and had excellent meals.
Our waiter rolled his eyes and acted very mad when we asked for our mixed green salads to come fairly unadorned. When they did arrive it was a plate of kale. I don’t ever remember ordering “mixed greens” and getting a plate of kale. Call it a kale salad! Chicken dish was fine nothing spectacular, oysters were good, appetizer of ham and biscuits served on a log took over our table. Why serve only 3 biscuits and 5 servings of ham? We ate upstairs which was quiet and lacked atmosphere. A big disappointment.

Hideously rude hostess who told us we were late for our reservation when we arrived a minute early. They moved us to an earlier time slot although I had an OpenTable email confirming the actual time. She said she gave our table away since we were “late”. Horrible.
However, the food and service were outstanding and we look forward to visiting again (but hopefully with a competent hostess).

Fabulous food as always. They've set the bar for shrimp and grits . . . and actually everything else we've eaten there. Anticipating a meal at Husk makes me feel giddy as a kid at Christmas. Really. Our waitperson was outstanding, too. She added to the ambiance and left our group smiling.

I had quail and got only couple of bones with little meet on it, together with rice and carrotts. My wife had a cheese burger with big potato wedges, and they where laying on a piece of old menue (absorb the greese?, not very applealing for this high rated restaurant). Had gritts upfront and they were really good, the rest of the food was nothing special, besides the high price. Disapointing...

This was our second time to Husk. We traveled to visit a friend in Charleston last year and this year. Last year we remembered the best burger and sweet tea we ever had so were excited to visit again. This time we were very disappointed. The buggers were definitely not the same, as though they had a strong pepperoni taste versus the great blend from last time. Not sure if we'll go again.

Since my son moved to the Charleston area about 4 years ago; I have wanted to go to Husk. It was well worth the wait. The service was attentive without being overbearing. We shared appetizers of ribs, fried chicken skins and sautéed broccoli. Our favorite was the ribs. For dinner we tried the pork, cat fish and duck. I think everyone enjoyed all, but the duck was the best. We were really satisfied after dinner, but tried two desserts, the ice creams were fantastic and the desserts were ok. It was an amazing meal and I can’t wait to return.
