This was not our first visit to Hunter's Head Tavern, nor will it be our last. The food and atmosphere were all we have come to expect, wonderful. Our server, Rose, was enthusiastic and helpful without being obtrusive, in a word perfect.

Cozy, charming and delectable - what more can one ask for on a frigid January day? Before we hit the door we were enchanted by the seasonal decorations on the tavern's exterior windows. We were greeted instantly by the hostess who accommodated our reservation request to be seated next to the wood burning fireplace. Since it was noon on Sunday the menu choices included brunch and lunch. After ordering at the bar, we enjoyed our hard ciders and some warm bread (crunch crust with a fluffy center - yummmm!). We split a pub salad which has a light, sweet vinaigrette dressing. The chicken pot pie was the perfect comfort food. A delicious, nicely seasoned filling served piping hot with a puff pastry topping. The eggs benedict came out with beautifully poached eggs, just the right amount of hollandaise sauce, delicious ham and size potato/veg mix. Our server was pleasant and attentive letting two old friends chatter away without feeling rushed. The poach pear was tempting but with the warm fire, that would have put us both in a coma and we didn't want to miss out on our visit to the current exhibits at the nearby National Sporting Library & Museum. It was a perfect Sunday outing!

It was another wonderful dining experience at the Hunter’s Head and the perfect spot to host a visiting family member. As always, the food was great, the service wonderful and thanks to Open Table, we had a great table waiting on our arrival.

Being British, I had high hopes for this restaurant and was anticipating the menu. The service was good and attentive. My partner’s beef he said was good. But, the bubble and squeak was appalling, simply mashed potatoes and other veggies smooshed up. No no no!!! Such a simple dish to get right and it was bad! The Welsh rarebit was so so. The bread they used was lovely as a dinner bread but because it had no structure, it disappeared under the sauce and the salad, though fresh and looked nice, lacked a decent dressing. We probably would not return.

The service was outstanding. The ribeye was very tasty but very fatty with a lot of gristle. My daughters filet was outstanding. I was not crazy about the ordering process, where you stand in line to place your order, then are served by the staff after that. Thought it was quite over priced for the value.
I think there are better values in the Middleburg area.

Always excellent. We travel an hour and a half for the closest experience to a pub lunch. Great home cooked gourmet with excellent service. I love the location, the atmosphere from the inglenook log fire going and of course the food. Five stars.

All the food was under seasoned (pork chops needed salt and pepper, sauce had no strong cherry flavor, could barely taste cheese in the grits and they needed salt as well) and the pork chops tiny (small, thin, at least 1/4 was bone). Love the atmosphere and the pub food is good, but menu specials and steaks always disappoint.

Restautant oozes hunt country charm and offers locally sourced ingredients. That alone makes it worth a visit. Having been a regular customer, the food prep and service can be hit or miss from time to time. Sometimes they rush you through your meal. And my recent steak ceasar salad choice arrived without dressing and with fatty meat slices. But the good menu, super location and reasonable prices keep me coming back.

I had the liver and onions. The liver was tough(membrane not removed ). I suggested to the person who took my order that it was sub-par and he attributed the problem to the supplier, not the cook.
I had to ask twice for ice for my wine, even though the server acknowledged that the request was not unusual. Attention by servers was spotty.
My lunch companions were satisfied with their meals, but not overwhelmed.
The seating in this pub/tavern is tight and it is very noisy. It is truly a realistic experience. However, I don't recommend it for those wanting a pleasant meal in an historic setting.

While we have dined at Hunter's Head many times, this was the first Thanksgiving buffet. The food was fabulous -- local seasonal ingredients cooked with just the right sophistication without being ridiculous (you know what I'm talkin' about), solicitous wait staff that doesn't hover, rustic tavern atmospher, country casual dress, nice mixture of clientele. Well, it's over the river and through the woods back to Hunter's Head for us next year!

My husband and I had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner, served buffet style, at Hunters Head Tavern in Upperville, VA. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. Wait staff brought drinks and soup immediately and cleared plates quickly. Most of the food is grown and raised locally, and there were many, many dishes to enjoy. We’ve eaten at Hunters Head many times, but this was our first Thanksgiving there. We would happily return for another holiday meal. The drive to Upperville is especially scenic in the fall.

We often celebrate Thanksgiving @ Hunters' Head. Great food, hospitality, ambience...and no dishes! They need to improve 2 things, however. The buffet line is a traffic jam & perhaps using the tented area outdoors would work better. We'd never had a table upstairs & found it uncomfortably hot. Other than that we'd probably return.

We had to place our order before we sat down. Felt a little pressured. However a party of 8 sat by us, and the waitress took their order. I ordered the Three Cheese Butternut Squash Ravioli. The squash was not cooked, it was hard. I told the waitress, and she asked me if I would like something else. I ordered the chicken fried steak, but it was not tender at all. They did end up taking both off our bill, but I would not recommend the restaurant to anyone.

Love the place and the back roads trip to it. The worst thing I can think of to say was the butter was a little hard for spreading on our fresh bread. The pumpkin drink I had was strong and the beef stroganoff was just right in tenderness and the Caesar was perfectly dressed. So sorry that I didn't have room for dessert.
