First, I love Hunter's Head Tavern and it's our go to restaurant for all family celebrations! Unfortunately, for this time around, it appeared to be everyone else's go to restaurant, as well! With the unique way of ordering at Hunter's Head, there was an excessive number of people waiting in line to order in a relatively small amount of area. For the first time, even with reservations, with the number of people already in line we were unsure if we should stay in line or have them seat us first, as suggested by the first person who finally acknowledged our presence. Unfortunately, without comprehending that even after being seated, we would then have to stand back in line, we chose the being seated option. Our waitress did provide menus, but made clear she was not taking our orders from the table. So back in line for all of us! While I would suggest they review the convenience of taking orders from the table for all customers, the food was absolutely wonderful and made the rest of the inconveniences worth it! We'll definitely be back with more patience knowing that the end result is fabulous!
One of the best taverns in all of Virginia. The atmosphere is beautiful, the food is excellent, the staff is accommodating and friendly. My wife and I had gone to HHT a few times and really liked it, so we decided to host a Gender Reveal party there. We had 13 guests in total and were accommodated with our own room and HHT was kind enough to provide us with a special cake for the occasion, which turned out to be excellent. Everything was just perfect. Highly recommended.
Best food and great atmosphere
The ambience and physical structure of the building was charming… However the food was very mediocre. The onion soup was at best average and the chicken in the salad was full of Cartlidge
This restaurant is one of our "go-to" places for a good meal in a cozy, quaint setting. We love the rustic and warm ambiance and the food is always good. Wonderful meats, fresh vegetables and salads, excellent pastas and desserts.
Most enjoyable evening. Love coming there as do the guests we bring.
Excellent food and service. Enchanting atmosphere and vibe. Always great!
A local favorite‼️
good food and nice atmosphere. I liked the British pub ambiance.
Hunter's Head Tavern is our favorite place to go...., we love that we don't live too far from the restaurant, :) LOVE the food..., I had Gnocchi, yum!!! It brought back great memories of me as a child helping my grandmother make Gnocchi's. Perfect comfort food..., delicious!
The food was exceptional and the service was impeccable!
The Shepherds pie and chicken pot pie are excellent choices. We enjoyed the entire experience! Will be coming back
Food was solid, though nothing exceptional. Overall atmosphere was very charming.
We were a group of 8 and had a separate room. Great time - excellent food.
One of the best lunches we’ve had at Hunter’s Head since we began visiting in 2006. Fish and chips excellent and the lobster roll was scrumptious.
Bartender/Order taker was not friendly at all! She seemed extremely irritated and was short was our party when we asked questions about the menu and how the ordering process worked. Our server was slow and seemed to be rushing us thru our meal. Three of the four in our party ordered the steak which was extremely tough. Dining room was not very cleanly. Prob won’t eat here again.
Always amazing! Great food, great friendly service, and a charming atmosphere.
Nice. Food was good, not great, but we loved the setting. The "fried" chicken was really just oven baked; the blackberry "tart" was not that flavorful, but OK; the orange vanilla ice tea, was fine by not a hit.
Absolutely wonderful! The service for us and our canine friend could not have been better- lovely people and fantastic food! We will be back again- maybe for Yappy Hour!
We had a mid afternoon reservation, and we were the only patrons upstairs. Our server was very attentive, informative and helpful. Food was good as always, but the service was exceptional. Thanks for making my friends birthday memorable!
One of my favorite places to eat. Always love their farm to table menu, staff is friendly and helpful all the time.
We have dined at Hunters Head on many occasions and many seasons. When we arrived, we decided to try the outdoor seating because the weather was cooperating. However, before ordering our food, it became clear that there was an extremely raucous table outside, and the noise level became intolerable (and the behavior became embarrassing). The staff graciously accepted our request to renew our indoor reservation and we proceeded to have a fairly quiet and quite delicious meal in an upstairs room.
Everything is phenomenal except my food. The bread was delicious and my sides were fine. The steak however was the worst I have ever eaten. I kept trying to cut it and I would have to saw each piece five to six times. My husbands fish and chips were delicious. I should have told my waiter but I didn’t. My dog thoroughly enjoyed it though.
Food was great and I appreciated the fact that, after making a reservation for Saturday evening, your staff was able to change it to the patio at the last minute and I like the informality and friendliness of the patrons.
Love this place. Our favs are the liver/onion and shepherd's pie.
Have been going since opened..time for a serious tune-up
Don't like ordering food and drinks from a gal who obviously doesnt like her job. Steak was chewy, potatoes luke warm .sat outside, bugs, heat. No room inside. What exactly were we tipping for? Servers simply brought us a plate of food.we left 2/3 of our food and no one asked why.
Food and service have gone down since we were there last. A shame as it's a wonderful little place.
Hello Howard! I apologize if you were not able to enjoy your recent visit with us. Can you be more specific on what happened on your day of visit so we will make sure all concerns will be addressed accordingly. We appreciate you taking the time to give us feedback.
We had a wonderful experience. Our server, Bianca, was very sweet and we enjoyed conversing with her. I had the shepherds pie and my husband the hamburger and they were delicious. Chocolate cake for dessert. Perfect.
The young man who greeted us seemed to be confused and did not tell us we had to go inside and order, so we sat outside for a while waiting. I got a phone call halfway through lunch asking if we were still coming, so obviously he did not do what he was supposed to do. But our waitress, Michelle, was fabulous, and the food and the rest of the service were excellent. Would definitely come again.
The servers there were very accommodating. We asked to move to a quieter dining room because of a crying child such that we couldn't hear each other and they gladly moved. The food was excellent
Food is FANTASTIC, great atmosphere and very friendly staff. Wish there was a place like it closer to where I live!
My second visit ...enjoyed the dessert & coffee- along with service & atmosphere. I'll always keep this place in mind for a meal when I'm in the area!
Be ready for English pub service which mean order at Bar and then wait for your food. In any case food good, ambience very pub like. Good experience
Great food and atmosphere. Sat outside and was able to take my pup on this particular day, since they had event where you could bring your dog. Loved the shepherd's pie and the artichoke dip.
We always enjoy Hunter's Head. The food is good (the pot pie is amazing!) and the building is just such an interesting place to see. The serving staff is always efficient and friendly. This has become a family favorite, even though it is an hour from home!
This was la lovely little pub style restaurant with great decor. The only reason I didn’t give it full stars was we wanted to reserve for 20 but they said we’d have to book a room for $500 with a set menu but we could book all separately, yet when we were there the room we were in could have hosted all of us. So they lost out on $$$$ as only 6 of us then booked there. The waiter was attentive but a bit pushy on desserts. No thanks means no thanks, not “are you sure”. Food was great though! First time for me to try Fried Green Tomatoes! Yum!
Overall, very underwhelmed with the service and the experience at Hunter's Head Tavern. When we made a table reservation for dinner I wrongly assumed they would have table service, but instead, you have to walk up to the counter to order dinner. Upon checking in the hostess was very confused about where we were sitting, didn't explain the ordering process, and was relatively unfriendly. We were never given the history of the building or a warm welcome, and there was a huge line to order food from the counter. The food is fine, but for the price, there are hundreds of other places where you can go and have a real dining experience and enjoy equally delicious food, all while not having to stand in line to get it.
Great location- But would not return.
While staying at the Salamander Resort and Spa we wanted to get off property for dinner one evening. Found this delightful pub on Open Table just a short drive from the resort. In keeping with the English tradition you order at a counter, but from there everything else is waited service. The menu is varied and includes traditional pub fare as well as other entrees. I chose the chicken pot pie and was not disappointed - it was delicious. Fried green tomatoes were also good as was the gnocchi. We had great service and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Would highly recommend!
Delicious food, good service but they need to explain the order - up - front service model to newcomers rather than have them sit waiting for attention
