As always, Hunter's Head served up a wonderful ambience and great food. Our server this time appeared a bit rushed; had to be reminded on a thing or two, and didn't ask us how we wanted to receive our check. She did go back and split it on request, saying "I'll try if I can remember" (2 couples, 2 checks) then rushed off before we could remind her. The divide came back wrong, but was close enough that there was no need for further contact. We always go back to HH from time to time.

The bread is amazing and the calamari was great. Our sandwiches were okay but the double chocolate cake was awesome! Nice wine selection too. I would return.

I was very disappointed. Have eaten there before and it was excellent. At this visit I felt unwelcome by our server. Our reservation was at 3 pm. When we sat she told us that lunch was over and dinner hadn’t started so “bear with us”. Service was poor. My food was mediocre. I was with a party of 4 and we ordered two orders of sticky toffee pudding for dessert. The waitress came to our table with a dirty plastic bin that had two pieces of what looked like pound cake wrapped in plastic wrap and one piece of the cake they use for the sticky toffee pudding to I guess show us there was only one order left. There was no need to bring a dirty bin to the table. Overall not a great visit.

British pub style restaurant, located in a converted historic building; ask about its history. The food is delicious, the location and scenery are beautiful. If your in the area hiking or going on a wine crawl, this place is an amazing spot. Just make sure to have reservations, especially on Sundays.

Wonderful meals in a quiet, pub-like setting. This is more than pub food though - it is absolutely delicious with generous portions and healthy Ingredients. Plus Guinness on tap. Amazing. Service was great. Our waitress helped with our choices and she was on the mark!

So I want to love this place and it always makes me sad that I don’t. I always wait a few months between going here because every time I go I say I won’t go back, but then I end up going anyway because the people are really nice and the service is generally good. Somebody should teach the chef how to make an authentic shepherd’s pie. It really should involve ground lamb but if it’s going to involve ground beef, it should taste a lot better-there is no richness or flavor to it at all and seasoning…well that doesn’t exist either. The calamari was OK – neither good nor bad. The pear salad what is the best thing we had but it was nothing special. Last time I was there I had some trout and some pot pie and shared the iceberg wedge – none of which were impressive either. Sorry it’s not better news… I’ll probably go back there again in a couple months and think the exact same thing.

We love Hunters Head. We have been going there for years and it’s always a great excuse to get out on some winding back roads with the goal of ending at HH. The food was good but not great. Things need seasoning. Service was great inside at the bar. They could stand to have some music playing in the background. It’s a shame to have such high quality products come out of the kitchen bereft of salt and seasoning.

As I walked the brick pathway to the Hunters Head entrance, I felt as though I might be entering a Revolutionary era time capsule and was delighted to discover true. This is a tavern expanded on the foundation of a log cabin built in 1750. The ambience of the tavern exudes total warmth and charm. I found the staff polite, alert, and accommodating. There are inside dining rooms and a small dining area in the bar area. Outside there was a spacious patio dining area, enclosed and heated. Yet, with the multiple dining areas, this is a popular destination, which can fill up quickly, so I would high recommend making reservations in advance of arrival. Much of the food if not all is locally sourced from nearby estate farms. Therefore one is getting the best fresh quality food and it is expertly cooked. My party also ordered chocolate cake for desert. The slices were thick, large, and moist. Understand too for the first visitor, this tavern restaurant is located in a very rural area, consisting of countryside. It's like finding an oasis on an African plain. While not inexpensive, the food is still reasonably priced considered the location and excellent preparation. It is definitely on my family's wish list to return often.

I had the appear and pear salad which was wonderful. Suggest making a reservation because the place is very busy. Our waitress was running the whole time we were there but she was very pleasant but, like so many places nowadays, they could probably use a little more help. But very pleasant staff there. We really enjoyed ourselves, as always when we go there.

Entree was fish and chips- the fried fish laid on top of the chips - bad way of presenting- the fish was hot from frying- and the steam made the fries very soggy- inedible. The spinach and artichoke dip had very little taste- the Brussels sprouts were good- the Cod had no flavor either- very disappointed - we live in the area and have always had hit or miss experiences dining at HuntersHead- it’s a charming atmosphere- and close to where we live- but it would be nice to have a local restaurant have consistency- the consistency is that it is never consistent.

My wife and I took a small excursion through Virginia in the horse and wine country and stopped at the hunters head Tavern. I had arranged for a reservation the day before, and they sat us by the fire with as we had requested. the service was exceptional. The English pub environment was welcoming and exactly what we were hoping for. The food quality and presentation was outstanding. The portions were so large we couldn’t have dessert, but will come back another time, everything from drinks, appetizers and the entrée were all exceptional. Definitely a treasure in this quaint Virginia Village.

From the out-of-this-world Brussel sprouts to the Bangers and Mash and Cordon bleu sandwich with maple mustard mayo…delicious! Our waitstaff never missed a beat and we had a cozy spot by the fireplace. It was perfect :)

I love EVERYTHING about Hunter's Head Tavern!!! The bucolic setting and historic ambiance, the coziness of its pub and dining rooms, the beauty and comfort of the patio, even on a rainy winter day, the friendly and outstanding hospitality, the wine and drinks list, and oh my heavens the food!!! Everything on the menu is a winner and taken to a new level of excellence, from the traditional fish and chips and burger, to the chicken-fried steak, shepherd's pie, and salads. As soon as we drove away from lunch, I wanted to return for dinner.

I so want to love Hunter's Head. We've been several times because my husband really likes this place. We love the history, feel and ambiance but the food just isn't very good. The shepherds pie this time was bad. Basically browned beef with potatoes on top but the potatoes look like someone dropped something on top and were smushed and choppy. No gravy in it, just maybe 5 peas. The food just needs a lot of work. My son's burger was mooing and not how he ordered it. Background music would also be nice so you can't hear everyone's conversations at other tables. We'll likely try again sometime since I'm always hopeful the food quality and presentation will improve.
