We had such a great experience at Hunter’s Head. We were a little early for our reservation, but the hostess went ahead and seated us.
Our service was impeccable. The young man was always “there” at the right time, but never, ever intrusive. My water glass was always full (even though I had a “mocktail” on the side. He was polite, knowledgeable about the menu and delivered bread, appetizers, and entrees right on time! (This is an art that seems to be lost these days, so I deeply appreciated it!)
They had a nice variety of bourbons for my husband to choose from and I enjoyed the Cranberry Spice “mocktail.” It was nice to have something to sip on that wasn’t alcohol, but a step up from water, soda, or tea. I appreciate that they’re on the menu.
The wedge salad (according to my husband) was perfect and my calamari appetizer is, without a doubt, the best calamari I have ever had. (And that’s saying a lot.) The breading was light and crispy enough to give it just the crunch you want, but without being so heavy that it hides the calamari completely. The dipping sauce (served on the side) is delicious, but I barely used it since the calamari itself was so delicious.
My husband enjoyed his country fried steak from the “Pub Fare” menu and said that it was delicious; that the meat was tender and flavorful. His only criticism was that he wished they’d placed the gravy atop the steak rather than just the potatoes. Not a big enough deal to ding them for it, though!
I ordered the Chicken Tandoori from the seasonal menu and it was very, very good. It was served with saffron rice, a nice cucumber/yogurt (tsaziki) sauce on the side and little naan bread. I liked the naan, but I found myself using the delicious bread they serve you prior to dinner. It’s perfectly crispy on the outside and warm and soft on the inside. So delicious.
Lastly, despite the fact that I was absurdly full, I ordered then Belgian Waffle Sundae. Delicious!
Was expecting so much more from my friend's prior experience. The service was average. The salmon was overcooked. We moved inside to have dessert (the bugs were biting). Give the height of peach season, we ordered peach pie. It was the worse ever. The pastry was bland and doughy. The peaches were as if they had been dehydrated. Was not a good experience.
We had a lovely outdoor brunch at Hunters Head Tavern. The service was excellent from the time we walked onto the patio. The ham steak and eggs was delicious and generous. The quiche with salad was fresh and tasty.
We are looking forward to going back for dinner.
This is my new go to place. The setting is on the patio is perfect during the Fall weather. The food is very good. The drive there and back on route 50 is historic and lovely. I take all of my out of town guests there and they love it.
Wonderful birthday dinner on the terrace for my husband. Haven't been there in while and it did not disappoint (never does)!
The food was excellent — well prepared and abundant — the terrace setting was glorious (especially if you travel with a dog), and our server was what you always hope for in a server but rarely get. Be sure to try the fried green tomatoes!
Reservation was not correct. Hostess was less than welcoming. Server made a questioning face when I asked for a kids menu for 9 year old granddaughter who is tall and looks older than her age and was not very attentive and the room was not that busy. Maybe the server was helping other guests that we could not see. My meal was nice, spinach and strawberry salad and Sangria. Hubby did not enjoy his salad, not enough dressing. There were many flies around our table, very gross.
We often come, as a couple, to the Tavern at the weekend for lunch or brunch. On the 27th , we were a family group of eight. All our family were from out of state, and we wanted somewhere we loved and outside. Hunter’s Head is popular and was busy. None the less our server Gary made us feel welcome, brought water immediately and was the type of server all servers should aspire to be! Everyone loved the food, the drinks and the setting. The fish and chips were particularly popular. Thank you for making our family reunion such a success!! Special kudos to Gary and the chef! Great team!
Really great food in a relaxed atmosphere, and I was able to bring my doggy!
The patio area was very nice and is dog friendly. The food was not up to standard for the price. My friend had the lobster dish for $35, very small portion. My husband had the tandoori chicken, which he said had no flavor. His rice was very, very dry. Naan was good. I had the blood orange salmon which was on the rare side. If we go back, we wil try the burgers/fish and chips (pub food). I would recommend this restaurant with reservations to a friend.
Hunter's Head's inclusion of humanely and sustainably grown food on their menu (though they have room for improvement) is exemplary and what moves us to drive 45 minutes to dine there. It is also located in a beautiful and peaceful setting.
The setting is nice for outdoor seating, service and servers on point. Food - not so, especially what we paid for in return. Asked for medium rare for the steaks and came out “well done”… seasoning was not good at all. Salmon meal was on point… appetizers sub par… we where celebrating with friends our anniversaries… Most likely would not recommend going and waisting money and or recommend going… First time going and most likely our last, sorry… disappointed for sure… Rating it a hard C-
The food was great, the staff attentive and wine pairing suggestions were very well done. Lovely evening.
Wonderful, as always.
Good assortment of British-themed gastropub food alongside more American offerings. Really liked both presentation and flavor of fish and chips. Would come back with my English relative to provide an elevated taste of home. Service was friendly and efficient and provided a welcoming country vibe.
Food was very good. Service weak- staff needs more training.
Great food; great service; beautiful room;will be back
Food and service were both excellent. Fish and chips were great. My wife had the dry aged New York strip and it was cooked perfectly. Nice night for outdoor dining.
Love the expanded patio and the table service. But miss the old bar menu with favorites such as chicken fried steak. Entrees are now more varied but just OK. Sometimes you would go to Hunters Head just to get comfort food. I miss that
A favorite spot in the VA countryside for a satisfying meal and relaxing experience. Employees are always a pleasure to chat with. Food is organic and local. Pricey, but nonetheless, we are regulars.
Starters a little limited but all of their featured entrees are first class (fish & chips!, bangers and mash) and don't miss out on the sticky toffee pudding.
Quaint setting, nice, friendly staff.
Well worth a trip
Staff was phenomenal. We will be back soon. Our favorite place.
Food and atmosphere were amazing. Be sure to get a reservation as it is typically full.
This place is delightful! Many outdoor tables in a beautiful courtyard area. It is the perfect place for lunch or dinner on a nice day. We will return!
The brunch was wonderful. Hash and French toast were huge hits. Great service. Patio is perfect.
The two girls working the hostess station were not welcoming or even polite. I clearly was interrupting their conversation when I arrived, and they were not happy about it. Dining room was full of cheap, crummy "vacation cabin" furniture with dumb little framed hunting scenes on the walls. All in all very much an all-you-can-eat buffet vibe. This is NOT what an English pub looks like.
Sat for 20 minutes before anyone offered us a drink. We ordered the brussels sprouts as an appetizer; they were very good and I thought that things were looking up. Sadly, the rest of the meal was a real letdown. They need to serve salted butter with the bread; the unsalted butter made the bread bland and greasy.
The "famous" fish and chips were just AWFUL. Much of the cod was brown (??) and the breading was greasy mush with no flavor at all. The chips--skinny shoestring fries--were disgusting: greasy, limp, and tasteless. The "smushed peas" had a gross texture and were stone cold. I don't usually order dessert, but I was still so hungry after eating almost none of the greasy fish, so I got the completely unremarkable sticky toffee pudding for dessert. No flavor other than cloying sweetness. I didn't even get a clean spoon with it. Everything was SO overpriced! I seem to remember the sticky toffee pudding costing more than ten bucks, which is obscene.
All of the waitstaff seemed to be teenagers. Service was glacial. We got some items we asked for eventually; others we had to ask for twice; a couple of things never arrived at all. There were huge houseflies everywhere; we had to keep waving them off of our food. There was no salt or pepper on the table, but we figured if we asked for it we'd be through eating before it arrived, so we didn't bother. To top it all off, I had indicated that our meal was for a special occasion when I made the reservation; not one member of the staff mentioned it.
If my friends ever want to go here again, I will do my best to talk them out of it.
The waitress had no personality. When she first arrived at our table she just stood and looked at us. Usually, your server introduces her or himself, welcomes you to the restaurant and offers to take drink orders. She just looked at us for about 2 seconds, which is a lifetime in that situation, until I said we would like a drink. She recommended a Virginia red wine for my wife and it was terrible. My beer came with no head on it. A beer should be served with a head of foam about 1/2” to3/4”. This is not unusual in a lot of restaurants. Most bartenders think they have to serve a beer filled to the top with no head. Big mistake.
My wife’s pork chop entree came with the side of corn and okra that was room temp. It went back and was returned several minutes later, hot and with a different pork chop. The pork chop had lots at fat, that my wife cut off. When we mentioned the fat content, the waitress said the pigs they source are free range, no drugs and eat all natural food products, which makes the meat more fatty. Not sure about that. But it could have trimmed a little better before cooking.
I ordered steak frites and the waitress asked if I wanted ketchup for my French fries, which I replied, “yes”. The ketchup never made it to the table.
I’m not sure how much steak I got in my entree, but for $42.00, it could have been more, or a better cut of meat. It may have been about 6 ounces, but it never said on the menu.
On a positive note, the dessert of Sticky Toffee Pudding was very good.
Our food was excellent and we had great service. The waiter was pleasant and very efficient. It was the first time dinning at Hunter's Head Tavern and plan to return in the future.
Always terrific! I love sitting inside to get a taste of an English pub as I remember in England. Love the variety of food choices too. Our waitress was excellent!
Third time eating here this trip. Great ambience, terrific service along with tasty food!
This is a great place with a varied menu from light to a lot and with tastes that will satisfy even the most difficult diners. Love the atmosphere, the food, the drink and the service.
Very helpful staff and good food despite a very busy restaurant!
Will definitely go back!
Our server was excellent. Food was good. Our server was The flies were terrible!
The food at Hunter’s Head is always fresh well prepared. We received outstanding service from Gary and we appreciated the change in how food is ordered.
I love eating here! The outdoor area is beautiful, lots of trees and plants with sturdy tables and chairs. Pretty plants and flowers everywhere. The food is really good. We both had the fish and chips which were appropriately crunchy. The cod was thick and flaky and the fries were crispy. We will return again soon!
Had a good time at dinner Would return anytime. Don't miss.
The three women in our party were promptly seated on the patio as we had a reservation. The wait staff was attentive and our drinks and food came promptly. The food was nothing to write home about and somewhat disappointing. . My pork chop was a bit tough. My friend's salmon was good but only came with a few small pieces of asparagus and the other friend has the moroccan spiced sirloin which had lots of gristle.
The appetizers were really good. The entrees were not. You can tell the food was frozen or not fresh.
Food is consistently good, especially the traditional British fare.
Good food with a quaint British vibe. Best on a nice day when you can sit outside.
