Hunter Steakhouse - Oceanside
Overall great family dinner experience!
Skip the shrimp scampi pasta, prime rib, red velvet and carrot cake .
Filet mignon was good, calamari was ok.
Thank you Jeanine for good service
We arrived for our 6:00PM reservation with my 93 year old dad (my late mother's favorite restaurant) and were seated in room wth several large parties. Thankfully parties were low-key and while serving them slowed the usual prompt service at the beginning, all went smoothly and server was very attentive overall . Three in my party ordered 3 different steaks and all were cooked as requested and food came out well-timed and delicious.
They allow people to bring dogs in the resturant and walk around loose. I get the new b.s. law, but this animal didn't even have a collar or tags, let alone a vest. And that law only applies to SERVICE Animals, not emotional support ones. There is a law that you can refuse service to anyone, which seems to have fallen by the way side. The place is dirty. We were seated up stairs at the corner table, and the walls looked like a crime scene. Splaters all over. It looked like someone got shot and it splattered. Then, as we tried to leave, I had to manuver my car back and forth, inches at a time, to get out of my parking spot because one of their Self Centered, Self important DICK HEAD COOK, parked that Santa Maria Catering Wood Pit wagon behind my car blocking my self snd another persons cars in, and just left it there hooked to the Van pulling it.
NO KIDDING. The service from our bus boy was better than the waiter. They let dogs run loose. The place is dirty and one of their catering cooks is a total dick who thinks he's so important he can block in customers cars if he feels like it, and walks away. I'm a local and won't be back.
Very friendly staff who actually seem to care whether or not you enjoy your food and experience. The steaks are excellent. This is my go-to steakhouse.
Don't bother. The tough, tasteless beef and fresh-out-of-the freezer seafood at this tired, old place don't even rate 1 star. You're better off going to the Outback instead.
This place wasn't what I expected. It reminded me of a dark Denny's that serves bigger steaks. The service was great and everyone was super nice. My prime ribs didn't seem fresh almost like it was microwaved and placed back on the plate. My husbands rib eye was nothing really to write home about.
Great food and wonderful service!! Would recommend to everyone coming to Oceanside!!
Great prime rib and table side salad service.
This was a great find. It was Friday, the last night of our vacation with my son's family. We needed a nice place that would take a reservation for 9! I have never seen a kids menu that had steak - it was such a treat to be able to order them real food! All the "adult" entres came with a choice of soup or salad and the salad "bar" was presented "table-side" on a large wheel-shaped platter where you could choose exactly what you wanted in your salad. Very neat! The steaks were next and they were cooked perfectly. Everyone had a real good time. My wife and I were even able to find a nice glass of Malbec on the wine list (we're not fans of CA wine). And to put the icing on the cake, the price was very reasonable (especially considering the fact that the grandkids weren't eating hot dogs). The only thing keeping me from a perfect review was that the server only brought two glasses of water (for my wife and I - we got there first) instead of the 9 we ordered. All in all, an excellent ending to our California vacation!
Great as usual & our waitress,Jeanine, was awesome, as usual! . 😉
In the past Hunter has done a nice job. This time they did not have nearly enough servers to support the small load, but they had 3 hostess people standing around and talking and plenty of bus staff but you could not get your order in or get dessert let alone get a check.
Our waitress was the best we've ever had there.
Good family dining.
Good food and good service.
Very delicious. Our server was delightful!
As always - super meal and great service ! Always the "go to" place !
Went with our 91 year old friend who is blind and very hard of hearing. They placed us in a quiet area and took great care of us. Delicious meal.
I've been coming to this exact same Hunter since 1973 when it was known as the Hungry Hunter. It's my go to place. But this place may lose this designator if it continues on it's downward spiral.
The waiting area smelled like an overflowing toilet. It was nasty. The young hostess said she'd see if she could fix it whenever had time. What? If she wasn't so busy flirting with the young host. I could have filmed a "how to" video.
Now what's with all the hostesses wearing those ill-fitting Goth outfits? That doesn't inspire dining confidence. It's time for a new up-to-date dress code.
The Hunter's prime rib and shrimp cocktail are still the best anywhere, bar none.
Unfortunately, this one time I didn't have the prime rib, I opted for the beef tips in Dijon sauce. They were too dry and way too salty. I couldn't eat them.
To make it right by me, they compted me the shrimp cocktail.
This is no longer part of the big chain restaurant that it was, instead this and one in San Diego are owned by the same individual. Unless there is money and effort into making it shine again, I'm afraid this will be milked dry for maximum return on investment without any future plans.
Went for early bird, had a filet and prime rib, both very good. Server was Shellie and we were more than pleased with the evening.
The Hunter Steakhouse has been a icon in San Diego for as many years as I've lived in San Diego (over 41 I'd guess). Hadn't been in years, so wanted to revisit. Dined on a Tuesday evening and was surprised at the crowd on a weekday evening. Had a comfortable booth and were seating immediately. Our waitress was great explaining the menu, and served our food very quickly. I had the large Prime Rib which was very good (huge piece, so big take home, too). My wife had a petite filet mignon and said it was quite good. Salad that comes with dinner was very good. Really like the ambiance of the multi-level setting, with a cozy bar/eating area downstairs that looked inviting. Would recommend it for casual dining for friends and family. Good value for the quality and quantity of the food.
The food tasted great (I recommend the Dijon beef tips!) and was served quickly. The server was attentive and brought lots of refills. Great first time experience- I will definitely be back soon.
Very nice stop on the way to San Diego! Convenient, efficient, good food and good service!
Nice restaurant but a little time dated. Extremely busy on a Saturday night, service was pretty good and food was excellent.
Oh dear : anachronistic was the world we decided on to sum up this place. Server was scattered (nice, friendly but disorganized: forgot things, left our hot food on a serving tray next to the table whilst fetching something else), the food was totally average : the steaks were good, prepared as ordered, but the calamari looked like a greasy dogs dinner, and just generally the place seemed like it’s best days were 40 years behind it. Staff had left a tray of dirty dishes by our table and they stayed their all evening until they were a mountain. Furniture was tired, early bird specials with the aged are probably the bulk of their patronage.
Unpolished, poorly run : we sadly didn’t enjoy the experience overall and wouldn’t revisit.
Hunter Steakhouse is absolutely my favorite local restaurant. The table side salad is always fresh and delicious with an assortment of ingredients that is not impossible to beat. I also always order the cab stuffed mushrooms. Always delicious!
Food was excellent.
Made reservations through Open Table. Arrived a bit early and was seated well before our reserved time. Server (Chelsea?) was great -- available but not intrusive.
Had prime rib. Perfectly cooked and tender.
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit. I have been visiting this place off and on since they opened in 1970 (my HS graduation year) and it has always been great.
What a pleasant experience we had - our filet mignon steaks were flavorful and cooked to perfection. We enjoyed the atmosphere. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. Great evening out.
We went to this restaurant for birthday dinner. Well they sat us in a room that had disgustingly dirty and ripped carpet and wallpaper. The prime rib was very fatty. I know prime rib has an outside layer of fat but this piece had allot throughout. My wife had the same piece of prime rib nut without all the fat. The waitress seldom came by to see how things were. My wife needed a coffee refill several times.
And finally there was NO recognition of a birthday at our table.
We had been here a couple of years ago and obviously the management/owner are no longer taking an interest in the restaurant.
Prime rib was tough. Server put someone else’s food in front of me and I touched it. He then grabbed my plate and served it to the table across from me. Food was cold.
Our steak was outstanding cooked exactly as we requested. Great dining experience
The food was very good. My husband had a steak that he just loved and I had the beef tips which were also very good. It was a cold night and we sat by the very inviting firesplace. The salad display was also good. It had a nice variety of accompaniment which we both enjoyed.
The restaurant was empty and they put us in the corner of the restraunt right by the exit. The table was pushed up into the booth and I could barley get in or out. Very frustrating. Everyone else had a nice booth or table with room. I made a reservation the night before so something like this wouldn't happen.
Our waitress, Pearl, was energetic, efficient and just perfect. Food was great and it was fairly quiet. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience!
Been Been going there for years always have a good service always have good food could use a little upgrading the booths are getting a little arm and I can you can cinnamon but you go right into a hole and the place Need some upgrade where we were sitting there were holes in the in the wood going out to the window
Great place good food great service! Could be updated a little..
My husband and I went to Hunters while visiting San Diego. We were craving a good steak at a fair price. Everything was fabulous! Everything!
Was terrible food and service no thanks never again..
