Hunter Steakhouse - Oceanside
We were very disappointed at our last visit. We come here once a year when we are on vacation in Oceanside. Until this year I have always written very positive reviews. This year however, I was very disappointed in my meal. The crab stuffed mushrooms were excellent as usual as was the table side salad. I always get the stuffed sirloin (top sirloin stuffed and topped with mushrooms. My steak was so tough I couldn’t cut it which the waitress witnessed. She immediately asked if I wanted a new one. I said let me see how the rest of the steak is. Both my husband and I tried to cut through the steak and neither of us could. There was a layer of gristle on the bottom that was so tough it couldn’t be cut or chewed so I finally asked the waitress to take it back. She went back to the kitchen and they told her all the cuts were the same and the only thing they could do was fix the same thing with a filet. At this point I said fine. My husband was half way through his meal by the time my steak came out. My husband also had a top sirloin and his was fine. I know what a top sirloin cut is and I have never had a problem with this cut before so I am pretty sure it was just that one piece that was not good. To add insult they charged me for the price of the filet. I can’t tell you how disappointed I was with the way they handled this whole thing. The server however was a doll and handled the situation the best she could.
It was very good. The atmosphere was nice and the food was very good
This was our first time to Hunter Steakhouse and we had a very nice meal. Many reviews say that the interior needs to be renovated, but if you like rustic, cabin type décor then you will like it here. The service was good and very friendly. The food was very good, we all had steaks (filet, ribeye, sirloin) and they were all perfectly cooked. The salad at the table is great, if you like salad bars you'll love it, they fix it right at your table.
The restaurant was established in 1970 and hasn't changed in decades. It is a huge venue but was practically empty. We ordered calamari to share and the server forgot to bring it -- after we reminded her she did bring it and comped us for the dish. It was ok but nothing to write home about.
We both ordered steaks. They were cooked about right but not exciting. The wine was so-so. The salads weren't very special either -- iceberg lettuce and mediocre croutons. We skipped dessert.
You know what you're getting. Quality matches price. Love the idea that you don't pay for sides. The salad made at the table is huge, then the meal is more than sufficient. Dessert selection is very good with lots of options. Felt a bit rushed by everything being brought out so quickly however, you need to move those tables.
Very dated decor. Dark, old and musty. Food just average. Not worth the money. Service was excellent. We were are party of four, and we all felt the same. Not going back.
The food and the service were excellent as usual. We love the table side salad
As always the food was great service was fabulous. The value is awesome. Just a great place to go have dinner love the salad wheel
We frequent the Hunter location in San Diego and were a little disappointed at how fatty the cuts of meat were in the Oceanside location. I was also disappointed when we showed up for our party of 11 reservation and were crammed in to a table for 8. We were literally overflowing into other guests dining areas and were elbow to elbow for a 50th birthday dinner. When we told the hostess we didn’t fit, she said she needed to find a manager. Meanwhile there was the entire back room with only one table sat & a big table for 12 wide open. She did eventually move us there and our server was fantastic. But there were no apologies for the initial seating debacle and we never saw a manager. We love Hunter’s but i’d recommend the Hotel Circle location.
Filet mignon was cooked perfectly. Love the table side salad and AuGratin potatoes were delicious!
We had a great meal for our son’s 21st birthday! He always wants Hunter’s Steak House for his birthday and any special event because of the great service and delicious food!
Clean, relaxed atmosphere with great food that didn’t break the bank.
My steak was fixed the way I like it plus even had peppercorn sauce.
Food is very average. Not worth the prices they charge.
We were seated upstairs and it was FREEZING cold!! I asked our server if something could be done and it continued to be cold! When our salads were served she asked if there was anything else and I asked for a blanket!! She said since we were the only ones upstairs she would ask if the air could be turned down. Ridiculous to have AC blasting at 9 pm at night. In addition to making customers cold it can make the food get cold quick.
Prime Rib Was amazing, It was quiet and a nice way to relax after work.
The food is always excellent...we enjoy the table side salad too. Service is very nice but there were several screaming children while we were dining.
Your entire staff was excellent! Thank you so much for making our bday party so special!
Have a wonderful evening!
Thought it was a bit pricey and not especially better - just ok. Was an old style dark restaurant with lots of small rooms. No view. Service was good. Speed was good.
We had five in our party and all ordered something different and we all loved our meals!
The food was delious and the service was great. Would definately go back
Beautiful. quiet setting with great food and prices.
This was our first time at Hunter Steakhouse and we were expecting a quiet booth in a restaurant with some steakhouse ambiance. Instead, the restaurant decor is very plain. We were seated in a booth next to a large table with a group of noisy people so we couldn't hold a conversation ourselves. The waitress was nice but she forgot a couple of things. The food, however, was very good--especially the tableside salad.
We had reservations for 3:30 and was offered either a lunch menu or dinner menu which I thought was great to be given a choice. Our server was very pleasant and took good care of us. I would recommend Hunter Steakhouse to a friend.
Overall great family dinner experience!
Skip the shrimp scampi pasta, prime rib, red velvet and carrot cake .
Filet mignon was good, calamari was ok.
Thank you Jeanine for good service
We arrived for our 6:00PM reservation with my 93 year old dad (my late mother's favorite restaurant) and were seated in room wth several large parties. Thankfully parties were low-key and while serving them slowed the usual prompt service at the beginning, all went smoothly and server was very attentive overall . Three in my party ordered 3 different steaks and all were cooked as requested and food came out well-timed and delicious.
They allow people to bring dogs in the resturant and walk around loose. I get the new b.s. law, but this animal didn't even have a collar or tags, let alone a vest. And that law only applies to SERVICE Animals, not emotional support ones. There is a law that you can refuse service to anyone, which seems to have fallen by the way side. The place is dirty. We were seated up stairs at the corner table, and the walls looked like a crime scene. Splaters all over. It looked like someone got shot and it splattered. Then, as we tried to leave, I had to manuver my car back and forth, inches at a time, to get out of my parking spot because one of their Self Centered, Self important DICK HEAD COOK, parked that Santa Maria Catering Wood Pit wagon behind my car blocking my self snd another persons cars in, and just left it there hooked to the Van pulling it.
NO KIDDING. The service from our bus boy was better than the waiter. They let dogs run loose. The place is dirty and one of their catering cooks is a total dick who thinks he's so important he can block in customers cars if he feels like it, and walks away. I'm a local and won't be back.
Very friendly staff who actually seem to care whether or not you enjoy your food and experience. The steaks are excellent. This is my go-to steakhouse.
Don't bother. The tough, tasteless beef and fresh-out-of-the freezer seafood at this tired, old place don't even rate 1 star. You're better off going to the Outback instead.
This place wasn't what I expected. It reminded me of a dark Denny's that serves bigger steaks. The service was great and everyone was super nice. My prime ribs didn't seem fresh almost like it was microwaved and placed back on the plate. My husbands rib eye was nothing really to write home about.
Great food and wonderful service!! Would recommend to everyone coming to Oceanside!!
Great prime rib and table side salad service.
This was a great find. It was Friday, the last night of our vacation with my son's family. We needed a nice place that would take a reservation for 9! I have never seen a kids menu that had steak - it was such a treat to be able to order them real food! All the "adult" entres came with a choice of soup or salad and the salad "bar" was presented "table-side" on a large wheel-shaped platter where you could choose exactly what you wanted in your salad. Very neat! The steaks were next and they were cooked perfectly. Everyone had a real good time. My wife and I were even able to find a nice glass of Malbec on the wine list (we're not fans of CA wine). And to put the icing on the cake, the price was very reasonable (especially considering the fact that the grandkids weren't eating hot dogs). The only thing keeping me from a perfect review was that the server only brought two glasses of water (for my wife and I - we got there first) instead of the 9 we ordered. All in all, an excellent ending to our California vacation!
Great as usual & our waitress,Jeanine, was awesome, as usual! . 😉
In the past Hunter has done a nice job. This time they did not have nearly enough servers to support the small load, but they had 3 hostess people standing around and talking and plenty of bus staff but you could not get your order in or get dessert let alone get a check.
Our waitress was the best we've ever had there.
Good family dining.
Good food and good service.
