Hunter Steakhouse - Mission Valley Ratings and Reviews
I love that hunters is a classic restaurant but many of us have never been there. I love the downstairs lounge with the fireplace. The food was fabulous, server was very attentive but it was very crowded that day and it was pretty loud otherwise wonderful. I will return!
One of the best steak dinners in San Diego. Worth a nice weekday or Sat Night dinner. The ribs are fall of the bone delicious and the table side salad bar is outstanding. Worth the extra few pennies to eat there verses some of the other steak houses in the county.
I've been to Hunters plenty of times, so the fact that it's not a consistent 4 star for me was a surprise.
Maybe it was Sunday that threw them off, but we were seated at a lonely little table in the corner of a tired room...the place is in desperate need of refurbishing.
We kept it simple--Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail For him (yes! Worth it) and we shared crab stuffed mushrooms, which, you know can be tricky, but they hot them right!
I tried the shrimp scampi lunguini-- they could just call it shrimp and lunguini. If there was any garlic, they were rationing it like it was a sugar coupon on WWII. I needed to ask for more parmigian just to taste something.
He had the ribeye, cooked to perfection. The lesson here, if you go to a steakhouse, order steak.
The ceasar salads were forgettable as was the turtle pie cheesecake. The flourless chocolate cake though, that hit the spot.
Our server was rarely seen, but they had so many busboys darting through the room it was distracting. We were in a corner, and still, it was excessive activity for a near empty restaurant.
Food was as expected. Cooked to our liking. Service was horrible. Our server obviously did not want to be there. She did not offer suggestions and only checked on us once. Busser was the one that kept me in water since she was never around. And when another soda was needed, we had to wait a ridiculous amount of time for it. Other tables in our area had a male server and he was on the ball. Constantly checking his tables and just a presence in the room if needed, plus he was doing other things as well like putting candles on the tables etc. Entire experience could have been improved if the service had not been so lacking.
We were there for San Diego Restaurant Week and we definitely enjoyed the food. The baby back ribs and the prime rib were so delicious! The bread, the salad wheel, the potato skins, the chocolate mousse with raspberry were so yummy as well! And.. The service was very good too!!!
We had a reservation. We arrived on time at 6:30 and were told we had to wait 15 minutes. I reiterated that we had a reservation and they said sorry. Then snickered behind my back the moment I turned to go find a place to wait with all of the other 25+ people.
When it was finally our turn, I had to ask, we were told we were next. A person who had init;ally walked in behind us made a reservation for 6:45. As were beginning to walk to the dining area that same person was told they were next. Apparently, you don't need reservations because you have to wait and are seated according to when you arrive anyway. This is not how reservations are supposed to work.
I ordered the 'award winning' prime rib. It was full of tendons and was by no means great, let alone award winning. I ate 3 or 4 bites around the edges as this was the only part that wasn't filled with tendons, the rest was a waste and no one ate it. My husband enjoyed his prime rib (he had a different cut than I did, apparently) and my son enjoyed his lamb. I tasted the lamb, it was delicious.
The service was good, not great...felt like I was eating at an every day place, had to ask for water, refilled my own wine glass...nothing outstanding.
The thing that stands out is their pricing, the value was definitely there for the wine and other dishes...I would never order the 'award winning' prime rib again...even if it was free. So if you want good food, good service, good value then this is a good place. Don't bother with a reservation, it's a waste of energy.
We went for the Restaurant Week 4-Course dinner. The waiter was fine, quick service BUT we expected our 4 courses to be served separately. We got our salad first, and during the salad course the busboy delivered our appetizers. Odd, but not as bad as the table adjacent to us who got their salad during their main! It just felt like nobody cared when anything was delivered. The salad, mains and apps were good. The desserts were not so good with the carrot cake being very dry with thin icing, unlike typical cream cheese icing that is thick and generous. We probably won't go back even though it might be better not during Restaurant Week. Black Angus and Outback are better.
I would strongly recommend NOT dining here. We had an 8pm reservation, but had to wait 20 minutes to be seated. The place was not packed, when we were seated there were only 3 other couples in the side of the restaurant we were and a dozen or so empty tables.
The aesthetic is poor, walls are poorly painted and the wall alongside our table had big chunks of chipped/flaked off paint.
We ordered immediately and waited another 20 minutes for our appetizer to arrive, 3 shrimp. It was ok, but it shouldnt take 20 minutes for an uncooked appetizer to arrive.
The steak was plained and unflavored as were the mashed potatoes. We came for restaurant week and it was a let down at best. Service was poor. Aesthetics were poor. Food was unflavored and I can only imagine this is to blame due to poor planning of restaurant week prep.
They have a gluten free menu list and very knowledgable staff answering questions about food sensitivity provoking ingredients with care and kindness. I am gluten free and my friend is dairy free but the two of us still managed to get a delightful dinner. I had the mushroom stuffed steak and she had the lamb chops with an order of the spicy shrimp for appetizers.
We were delighted to see lots of people in the lobby when we arrived early for our reservation. The host took us back to our table right on time. The server was kind and efficient, and did a great job. The food came out very quickly, and the meals were cooked perfectly. The seasoning was a little blander than we usually like, but all in all, it was delicious. The ambiance is like a classic hunting lodge, but thankfully, I didn't see any taxidermy trophies. It was peaceful and wonderful for conversation.
Our reservation was for 5:00 o'clock. We arrived 10 minutes early and were told we would have to wait 10 minutes. Twenty minutes later--at 5:10 we were finally seated. There were empty tables when we arrived and when we were seated. I do not understand having to wait! It doesn't make sense.
Ordered the hot and spicey shrimp....I'm not sure what I was expecting but the shrimp tasted liked it was sautéed with Tabasco and old bay seasoning. Not impressed, however the prime rib was excellent! Perfect medium rare as I ordered. I will be returning just to order the prime rib again.
Service was good and the food came out on a timely manner. I did not feel rushed and although our little table was place on the side of the staircase and servers were walking by with large trays holder food platters over our head, I wanted to get through my meal before a tray landed on our table or worst case...on my head!
My daughter and I were impressed with the menu choices and our attentive, cordial server. She returned several times to ask if we needed anything and to refill iced tea glasses, which I consider makes her an excellent server. When we arrived, I explained to the host that I had a hearing difficulty, and asked to be seated on the side of the dining area, and he graciously seated us in a booth. The dining area was small, and fairly full of diners at noon, but we were still able to visit easily without distraction of other diners' voices. The server presented our check at a time, which gave us the opportunity to leave at our convenience. My daughter & I discussed how very pleased we were with the food, and the server and decided we would plan to return again to order more of your menu choices. We have dined there before, but hadn't thought of planning to do it more often.
Food and ambience was good. The Hunter Steakhouse in Oceanside is much better. This restaurant didn't have mushrooms or bacon for the tableside salad and they didn't offer their delicious potatoes augratin as a side. Overall, A nice place with good food but if I'm going to spend the money, I will go to the one in Oceanside.
The food was delicious. However we were disappointed when we reserved we said we were celebrating our anniversary yet they seated us next to a large party having a business meeting and we couldn't even hear each other. There was a booth available in same room and away from this large party which they could have sat us at. No mention made of our anniversary
This place is is in sad shape! It's dingy, dark, old and pretty run down! We were seated upstairs. Our server was great, it's not his fault that the place has seen better days. The food was good, but just eating in such a run down place ruined the whole experience! When our reservations were made on Open Table, they asked if it was a special occasion, yes it was! So we entered it into the section where there is a spot to do so. Sadly, it was never acknowledged as I don't think the person that sat us bothered to mention it to our server or do I think they bothered to look for that detail or even care! The bathrooms are being remodeled, which is a good thing as they are very outdated! We will not return to this restaurant!
Had a wonderful experience at Hunter! The staff was fantastic (except one guy that kind of threw/dropped every plate he put down on the table, but I'm trying to overlook that since everyone else was amazing). Everyone's food was superb, although we did have to send one steak back that was way overcooked (ordered medium-rare, got well done - so not even close on that one). All in all, our group greatly enjoyed the visit.
Noise level was unlike anything I've experienced anywhere. Many obnoxious people trying to shout over each other and apparently be the center of attention. It made the entire experience unpleasant. Coupled with what I would consider mediocre food and relatively high prices , this will be the first and last time we go there.
