Hula Grill - Waikiki Ratings and Reviews
The view was nice, oceanfront; however, there's another restaurant downstairs so you can see them if you have the oceanfront table. The service was really friendly except for our server who seemed jusr a tad bit stuffy, totally unexpected. We ordered the tasting menu: both luscious and ceasar salads were good though some of my romaine lettuce was beginning to turn brown. We had the steak and the shortribs which were both flavorful and cooked pretty well. The desserts were bread pudding (a little on the dry side) with vanilla ice cream and strawberry-guava sorbet (can totally taste both fruits).
It’s a good restaurant overall. The restaurant manager was kind enough to address my husband’s back problem and get him beach towels for support (since they didn’t have separate cushioning pillows). We felt taken care of because of such a warm consideration. Food was good with the appropriate side pairings included within the same price. Example, a roasted/ baked was accompanied by a spinach/ coriander salad and cucumber yogurt mix. Only the price seemed a little higher than at any average restaurant. Good thing is this didn’t feel like an average restaurant! Provided the business they get because of good food, ambiance and service, the prices can be taken down a notch by $3-4 for an entrée. Overall we loved the restaurant and will definitely go back when we feel like we can spend a little bit more than we generally do at Duke’s Waikiki. Duke’s felt a more casual. Nonetheless this place has more classy feel to it than Duke’s! So we’ll go per the vibes we are into at the time!
The View from the balcony was amazing, however our server was not friendly and the price for the meal was high because of the view, not because of the flavors. The bread they give you at the beginning of the meal seemed as though it was warm because they had re-heated it in the microwave. (it was tough and chewy). The rest of the meal was fine, just not worth the price we paid for it. We did enjoy our night, but have no desire to return.
The Hula Grill is a really cool place esp if you’re near the outside seating. The inside area was nice too, with live music. The service is really good. The wait staff is courteous and attentive. The menu has such promise and the food looks great too!! But...the dishes we had were very bland. We had the coconut calamari to start out and it looked so delicious but was just average with little taste. I had to dip it in the suave just for it to have some flavor. I ordered the ramen soup, which was decent. It definitely had a lot in it and the base of the soup was pretty good. My wife ordered the crusted white fish and it was so bland and boring she couldn’t eat all of it. We also ordered a side of grilled zucchini...terribly bland with no flavor.
The place is in a perfect spot and has a great view. If just ok for the price you pay but hey it’s Hawaii, everything is going to be pricey. You just want it to be really good. Oh well. Dukes is better.
Right on the beach - great place to watch the sun set with beautiful palm trees in the background. Appetizers and fish dishes were excellent. Great lava flow and happy hour drinks. Very accomodating to adjust the fish and preparations in the specials for several in our party.
We had to wait 15 minuets past our reservations time and were told they didn’t have enough waiters . Fish was over cooked. I have eaten at this restaurant in the past and had good service and good food. I this was my first visit I would never go back but I will give it another try.
