Hula Grill - Waikiki Ratings and Reviews
We have dined at this restaurant on our yearly visit to Hawaii for a number of years, and it has been fine. This time, our chicken came out before our salad, and the chicken was pink inside for one piece, and ice cold in the middle for the other. We won’t be returning. Lovely view, though, and friendly, though inaccurate service.
Hula Grill was the best restaurant experience in our latest stay in Honolulu. We were seated near the balcony with a perfect view of the sunset. Our mai tais were perfect. The pineapple & greens salad and the fire-grilled ahi were perfect. Surprisingly, we didn't see as much variety and creativeness on other restaurant menus.
Hula Grill was fantastic.
We were seated on the balcony with a great view of the beach and ocean. We ordered a couple of mai tais to start - they were very good.
For an appetizer my wife and I split the ceasar salad - it was delicious. The dressing was a bit creamier than I am used to, but it had a great flavor.
For entrees, I ordered the mahi-mahi with and extra lobstertail. It was fantastic. The fish and lobster were both cooked perfectly. I ate every bit of both. There was a light creamy sauce with the mahi-mahi; I have no idea what it was, but it tasted fantastic. The portions were both huge. By the time I finished the fish and lobster, I had no room for the rice or other items on the plate.
My wife ordered the beef short rib. It was cooked very well and the flavor was fantastic. To be honest, I only had a couple of small bites because my dish was so good.
We skipped desert because we were so full.
Overall, this was one of my favorite restaurants in Hawaii. The service was great, the food was great, the drinks were good. I would absolutely recommend this, and we will be going back.
My one suggestion: if your party only has two people, make sure to ask for a table at outside at the edge of the balcony. The ambiance did not seem as good inside the restaurant, but our table was fantastic.
We dined at Hula Grill last week while visiting Waikiki for the first time. We've been to the Maui location several times. The ambiance here is different; it's not quite as scenic, classy or authentic-feeling as being right on the beach in Maui. It has a more casual vibe. That being said, it is still a (partially) open-air restaurant with ocean views (from the second floor of the hotel it's in) and we'd visit it again. It's central, the food is very good, and we dined with our two kids (2.5 and 10 months) and they were very accommodating. Our server, Steve, offered local suggestions for things to do and see - and was a really nice guy. 4/5 stars overall.
A New Year Day lunch disaster!
It took 15 minutes to “check in” and get seated. We ordered two soft drinks, one appetizer, and two entrées. Took took about ten minutes to get our drinks, and another ten or so for appetizer. Waited another half hour for our food, only to be apologized for more delay. So about an hour after we got seated, we left. This was with a baby who was happy to entertain herself, but just could not wait more. No plates to share, but furnished (slammed onto the table which startled our baby), numerous apologies that never got followed up, and below average food (from what we did get). Absolutely overrated food, below average food, and unacceptable service.
Unfortunately I have to say we were disappointed with the Hula Grill. One of our meals had to be sent back as the meat was stone cold in the middle so was not cooked. Another meal was only warm, another meal had the incorrect sauce on it. The waiter did not return once to see if our drinks needed to be refreshed. Overall unsatisfactory..... However the setting is beautiful if you can get a waters edge table, we didn't even though we requested one but I am sure everybody has the same request.
The sunset was glorious! There was an excellent special of two fishes prepared two different ways. So good! The waitstaff was very friendly and didn’t rush us even though they were busy. Definitely get reservations for an hour before sunset. Perfect evening!
Started with drinks at the bar with a couple great Mai Tai's before our reservation. We were then seated at our table overlooking the beach with a nice view and sound of the lively bands music below. Our server was very prompt and covered all questions we had including the specials. We took his advice and glad we did as it had to be the best tasting fresh fish plate yet. We highly recommend the Hula Grill to anyone wanting great quality food and superior service at a moderate price.
Surprisingly, the food was not good the night we went.
The fish was so overdone it had the texture and taste of a dry chicken breast. The 'add-on' lobster tail was no bigger than a large shrimp and once again so overcooked it was a rubber.
Thanks to the Management for taking care of things. We were looking forward to a nice dinner, unfortunately we will remember this one for all the wrong reasons.
We have eaten at the Hula Grille in the past, so the food quality and preparation this time was a surprise to us.
