We have been coming to hula grill for 22 years and absolutely love it.
Great atmosphere and service. Lovely spot with great food and drink options
They offer a tasting menu between 4:45-5:45, but they won't let you know that unless you ask. The portions are tiny, but if you don't want to overeat and want to get a good deal - it's a good way to go
Food was average. A little pricey.
We had a very nice time. Service was spot on thanks to Megan, our server. The coconut seafood chowder was delicious as well as the lobster and scallop potstickers. Top it all off with a huge slice of Hula pie and the evening was superb!
Love the Hula Grill! Book reservation early or you will have to wait at least an hour on busy nights, but worth it. Great food, service (thank you, Brian) and sunset view! Hawaiian decor added to the ambiance. Highly recommend.
We had an excellent meal at Hula Grill
Shared kale salad with beets and nuts and other locally grown ingredients.
Entrees were a mild, delicious snapper and a special combo of ono-ahi
A-Z Pinot Gris went perfectly with the snapper
Always lively and friendly with beautiful ocean views and sunsets
Be sure to book a reservation so you aren’t disappointed
Probably the best service I have ever had at a restaurant. Food was fantastic. Server went above and beyond and always with a smile.
Great service. Thank you to our server, Montana. He knew the menu and specials, assisted me with wine, allowing me to sample two the two I was considering which was very appreciated. For the food I chose the chef’s special and it rocked! Furikake crusted ahi was delicious and a melt in your mouth feel, the grilled mahi was moist, smokey and superb. Accompanied by cilantro basmati rice and some mildly pickled veggies was just right. It was again a great experience that will be a cherished memory of my visit to Maui.
Our waiter, Jake, was wonderful! The food was good but seemed overpriced for the portion size and value.
Great place for dinner and cocktails!
Great location... beautiful sunsets... portions small for price...
We arrived 20 minutes early for our reservation. The hostess was very busy and. asked if we would mind coming back in 10 minutes. I was disappointed with this so we left to go for a walk. Suddenly the hostess reappeared outside the restaurant along the path, calling my name. She ran up to me and said she was sorry and she just had an ocean front table open up and would I like it? Of course we took it. An excellent table, during a very busy time for a customer 20 minutes early, is excellent service! My tip reflected this consideration. The food, of course, is fantastic as always!
Hula Grill never disappoints us. The food and service were great!
I wish there was a third option for the smiley faces, one in-between happy and sad for "meh".
We usually eat here once while visiting Maui - it's close to our place, consistent and while not super innovative, quality ingredients are used and we are fans of Chef Merriman being in the business ourselves.
This time was just OK. I hope they are not getting complacent; or with the addition of MonkeyPod (great Happy Hour btw) getting distracted.
I miss the old bread service which was fun and unique (served in a lunchbox type container) - now it's in a basket which isn't as imaginative.
I had one of the staple dishes there - the crab topped Mac crusted Mahi Mahi - the dish looked thrown together and not as pristine a presentation as normal.
Same with the rest of the dishes - they were just OK. I wonder how Chef would feel about this.
Service at the bar was very causal, I had to flag the bartenders down every time I needed anything. Not a lot of eye contact or intuitive service. Well bartender was verrrry slow. Service at the table was fine and up to par.
I hope this review is taken in the light in which it was intended - being in the industry I always admired the execution at all of the Merriman locations precisely because they don't do what most places with a built in spectacular view do - which is to rely mostly on the view and not care too much about execution of the food, beverage and service. Please stay vigilant!
Food was good service was OK, he acted as though we were a burden
Great service and location with above average food that was good but not great, with exception to the special vegetable family style plate we had which was excellent.
I love trying new food and fish when on vacation. We tried the monchong and it was insanely good. A favorite meal in Maui.
Great service and wonderful fresh Hawaiian seafood. Lovely seating right by the water! Would definitely come back next time we’re in Maui.
Dressed up for anticipation of a classy meal.
Left us sitting in the rain until we asked to be moved.
Our waiter for food service was fine.
The meals were not good, especially for the premium prices.
Would not recommend.
We had put it that is was a birthday and they never acknowledged it at all: the service was so slow that by the time it was dessert, I didn’t even tell them. We were in Maui on vacay, but wanted to celebrate my son’s birthday that is in a week 1 night out at dinner. We just ended up leaving with no dessert. Our server was limping and acted annoyed to have to be at work. Overall I usually love this place , but was not impressed at all. The food was nothing to write home about either. I would stick to their restaurants on the West coast and avoid their Hawaii locations which the food overrated. I never wrote reviews on places but for here I thought it was necessary.
Great food and great service!
We went to hula grill on our last night in Maui. We wanted it to be special for my hubby’s birthday but there were too many incidences of mixups and errors to make it really special. The food: was pretty good- I had the surf and turf which was a small filet with three pieces of shrimp for $45. Pretty hefty price but it’s Maui. Husband ordered what the waiter said was his fav dish but what came out was the daily special- had to wait longer for his meal. Also my hubby’s drink the Plantation Lemonade was super watered down- too much ice or something switched for a Lava beer which was fine.
The crux of the whole night was that I was trying to surprise my husband with dessert and a candle and the waiter blew it by telling him I ordered him a dessert already for his birthday - bummer- needs a little more social awareness there. And no candle just a piece of pineapple upside down cake. Anyways we tipped the required 15% because he was a nice guy.
We loved this restaurant for a casual outdoor lunch by the ocean, and had to return for dinner too. Definitely not disappointed. Great menu, great service, and outstanding views of the water.
Not cheap, but worth it for a special dinner out. Only downside was that the table we had was next to the lawn area facing the water and kids were all over the place running off energy while being ignored by parents
Poke tacos a must our favorite restaurant on Maui the views are spectacular
Didn’t appreciate being forced to order from a different menu just because we made a reservation. It was not made clear that this was a requirement when I made the reservation and the menu we had to order from was not nearly as appealing, especially for kids. Manager allowed us to order from the other menu, but it was very clear that we were inconveniencing the restaurant by doing so.
Table service was great. Front reservation desk not so much. I stood st the desk for a while before 1 of the 3 girls addressed me, not just the first time but again when I returned the beeper. All it takes is s hello I’ll b right with you, and not one of them did not do this... not happy especially for how pricey this restaurant is. Table service was spectacular.
Always fresh seafood, well prepared, with a nice view of every day's sunset. A must in Maui with great shopping at Whaler's Village.
We had reservations for 6 but were seated around 6:45. Manager apologized and gave us a great table with sunset view and appetizer. Evening was extremely enjoyable if just a bit overpriced. Wait staff, food, and ambience were fantastic.
Great meal, the Ahi steak was awesome. Montana was our waiter and he was awesome, explained the menu, gave us sauces to taste before making our decision. Everyone got something different and everyone was pleased
This is a great location in Whalers' Village with ocean view and great people watching. Fresh island fish and veggies rule the menu. Be sure to make your reservation before leaving for Maui. Sunset this time of year is 6:45 so adjust accordingly.
We had a delicious dinner here. With a reservation made on Open Table and agreeing to a 15 minute wait, we were seated at a waterfront table. It was lovely.
Dick started with the potstickers and was quite happy with them. We shared a Localicious salad, which had interesting components and a tasty vinagarette.
The special was a plate of grilled mahi and ono, a local white fish. The shrimp curry sauce was delicious. We also shared a bottle of Oregon Pinot. The wine list had range and was fairly priced.
We had wonderful service from Matt. He was informative, attentive, but not overbearing. We will return on our next trip.
Last night in Maui. The food and service was great.
Yet another outstanding dinner at the Hula Grill! We love the menu and the attentive wait staff. Very allergy friendly and just 10/10 on all counts. Thanks DJ! For comparison to Dukes, we give the Hula Grill the edge. Half of our party prefers the location of Dukes but all in our party preferred the Hula Grill food and staff.
Our family had a wonder dinner this evening. We would highly recommend the Coconut Seafood Stew and the Monchong.
Amazing fish and super friendly staff
The ambiance and location is terrific. Enjoyed the live music. For the price I feel I should have been Wowed! The food was good not great. This is a very popular restaurant with a long waiting line. I felt a bit rushed so they could get the table turned. They brought a delicious desert for a birthday at our table.
The hostess got the evening off to a bad start - she was rude, curt and couldn't care less. Luckily, from there, the server and her team saved the rest of the dinner, but we still couldn't shake how poorly the hostess treated us in the beginning.
I didn’t realize this place was for foodies... I’m more simple.
