About Hula Grill - Kaanapali
On the water's edge on Kaanapali Beach, Hula Grill offers a stunning view of the Pacific and of the islands of Lanai and Molokai. From this distinctly Hawaiian vantage point, you are invited to join us as we celebrate the hospitality, culture and cuisine of the islands. Dinner is served in our open-air dining room where you can relax in the ambiance of a plantation era beach house while enjoying renown chef Peter Merriman's Hawaii Regional Seafood, that isn't only a favorite of vacationers, but locals too. Hawaiian fresh fish and locally grown produce are combined to create amazing menu offerings that are as colorful as they are flavorful. Fiery sunsets are served up daily along with live Hawaiian entertainment.
Our Barefoot Bar offers a more casual menu serving both lunch and dinner under authentic thatch roof umbrellas and a sand floor where you can sink your toes in. The Barefoot Bar is seated on a walk-in basis only.

Hula Grill - Kaanapali Ratings and Reviews
Had an early dinner at 4:45 pm with my girlfriend. Got seated on the patio with a fabulous view of the sunset.
Ate the Chef's tasting menu - kale salad, filet mignon, and pineapple upside down cake. All were beautifully made and delicious. The cocktails were amazing too. Fabulous service rounded off the evening.
We always eat at Hula Grill a couple of times each year we're in Maui. I recommend making a reservation (which is for the dining room only because the bar/casual table area does not accept reservations). The menu is similar but slightly more on the upscale side; however, being a "dining room" doesn't mean sitting inside and missing out on the outdoor atmosphere - it's all open. The only thing is that if you're dining with your kids, there is no keiki menu, so sit in the outdoor area. Without a reservation, you're always looking at a 45 minute wait minimum.
The food is consistent, and the menu never changes. Even the "chef's special" of two types of fish, pineapple rice, and vegetable is always the same. The food is good but not anything too different than what you see on most local restaurants in Maui. I did have one excellent piece of fish on my plate and one was that was overcooked, but the rice is divine. My friend got the Bucatini shrimp pasta (a new one for us), and she absolutely loved it, even saying she'll order it the next time. Of course their Hula Pie is one of the best (same as Duke's), but the Pineapple upside down cake is also excellent. Wines are fairly standard among TS Restaurants choices, but they have the benefit of a Sancerre. Of course the whites never stay very cold, but that's the weather's fault.
Service was good, waiter was friendly, as were the waitresses who bring drinks. Overall, a consistent experience, and we'll continue to return.
Our waiter, Lauren, was amazing. He was very attentive and made great suggestions for menu items. We each had something different and also had a couple appetizers to share. Everything was very tasty and fresh. Can’t wait to come back next time we are in town! Mahalo!
We made reservations and we're glad that we did. The place was packed at our 6:00 dinner and we only had a table in the back available. Nevertheless we still could see the beautiful sunset and ocean view. The fish was fresh and perfectly cooked. My seared ahi was delicious and my husband had the special of grilled Ono and encrusted Mahi. We loved the focaccia bread and the homemade " chilli water" sauce for dipping. We would definitely go back!
Came for the view but amazed with the service and food. Excellent kale salad and macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi. Whatever you eat, you must save room for the hula pie! This is not your typical tourist trap restaurant. It is excellent! We wish we had come earlier in our trip; we would not have eaten anywhere else! Thank you for a memorable meal!
Excellent food especially any of the fish dishes. Great place. Parking is easy as they have validation at whaler shopping village up to 3 hrs free. Go checkout Leilani’s as well on another night and dukes kaanapali is also epic. All restaurants owned by the same folks all serving up excellent food and a good time in a variety of ways
We always look forward to a great night at the Hula Grill and are never disappointed. Our reserved table was ready and waiting, drinks, appies and entrees were all delicious. Ceviche, Ahi tuna and the classic macadamia crusted Mahi were excellent. Our friendly server gave good advice on menu selections and cheerfully arranged a nut free surprise birthday dessert for our birthday girl. The sunset is always gorgeous and there was a beautiful Maui rainbow on this evening.
Food was great, but overpriced for what you get. Next time, i'll skip this place and just go to Mama's Fish House to get a better meal for the same price. Our service was terrible. For some reason the waiter kept looking down on us like we shouldn't be there dressed in a Hurley T-shirt or maybe he thought we just couldn't afford it??? The service was terrible by him. I wouldn't go there again. There are places on the island with just as good of food and better service.
We've eaten at Hula Grill's Beachfront many times but this was only the second time we've eaten in the dining room, kind of a last special meal before our return to the Mainland. Top shelf experience from beginning to end! We were seated at a great oceanfront table, private and away from the main traffic flow. Our server Landon was excellent, attentive but not obsequious. We split a kale salad, excellent. I had the seared ahi entrée, my husband the macadamia crusted crab topped fish of the day. Both were excellently prepared and delicious. We had a coupon so treated ourselves to a split of the Pineapple Upside Down cake, served warm. Wonderful finish to an excellent meal!
Appetizers were great but entrees were a letdown. We had seafood potstickers, poke tacos and shrimp cocktail for appetizers. All three very good. So we had great expectations for our entrees. We had the macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi which didn’t have a lot of flavor but didn’t seem very fresh. And we had the short ribs which was more like a piece of pot roast. Also not a lot of flavor. Drinks were very slow as well.
We met our neighbors there for my husbands birthday. It’s still extremely busy due to the holidays and golf tournament. We were seated in the non scenic area, close to a sizable wedding party. Quite noisy!
Our server was as attentive as she could be given the circumstances, and the comped dessert was lovely.
The food was great but I think the prices have definitely gone up.
Sorry all those Hula Grill lovers out there, we had a terrible experience. Waiter only recommended the most expensive dishes, kept promising to bring us bread but never did, food came out in a ridiculous order and pace (appetizers delivered in the middle of the meal, half the table nearly finishing their food before the other half received theirs, which was defended by our waiter in a completely nonsensical way, etc). But the food was also quite bad. The signature dish, the macadamia and crab crusted Mahi Mahi, which our waiter described as the most delicious thing he has ever eaten is his life, was inedible. It was cooked so unevenly that left one side of my poor fish dry and chalky and the other side just cooked. The 1-2 cups of bland, unseasoned white rice sucked whatever flavor and texture mustered by the aging and overly rich sauce. But the macadamia and crab" crust" on the fish was an abomination. It was gloppy and greasy and undercooked steamed bread goop. And don't get me started with my wife's risotto, which tasted as if it was cooked (poorly) four days ago and then popped into the micro four a touch up just before scraping it onto the plate and charging $35 dollars for it. But... The view is stunning. Go at sunset if you hope to leave feeling anything but disappointed.
Not a fan. Reasons: Made a reservation about 2 weeks before we were to arrive for 5:30pm asked if possible if we could sit outside made it so we could watch the sunset. We were seated in area that seemed like an afterthought. Back in the dinning area by the kitchen. Couldn’t even see the sunset away from everyone. Made the experience uneventful. It’s not like I did an open table reservation the day before. Wasn’t happy.
The Hula Grill is a great start to a Maui vacation. The location in Whaler's Village in Kaanapali is lovely, with a gorgeous view of the ocean and the island of Lanai. The restaurant is energetic with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Service is very good, and food presentation is nice. As expected for a resort area catering to tourists, prices are a bit on the high side, but on par with other comparable establishments. Food is good, but not memorable, but overall, dining at the Hula Grill makes for a pleasant evening. The setting is most charming, and a nice introduction to island outdoor dining.
Hula Grill was my husband’s choice for our 35th anniversary dinner. Our family was seated promptly at 6:30, greeted by our personable waiter and ordered drinks. At 7:00, our drink order had still not arrived. Our waiter told us something must have happened and resubmitted our drink order. The remainder of our dining experience proceeded smoothly, but was certainly affected by sitting for 40 minutes waiting for a drink. My husband very much enjoyed his ribeye; it was one of the best meals he had during our five weeks in Maui. My son found his short rib flavorful, but his meal was so small that he ate most of my shrimp pasta, which while tasty, was not much either. The atmosphere at Hula Grill is always beautiful, but for the prices charged, a person shouldn’t go home hungry.
