Hugo's Frog Bar & Fish House - Naperville Ratings and Reviews
Our dining experience was very good. Hugo's is a "go to" place for us and has been for years. This specific dining experience was good in almost all ways. The downside was that our booth was adjacent to a rather loud group of about 15 people which is not typical the times we've been there. Other than that, the food was great and service was great.
Food was good, but the lobster was cooked a little too long where it seemed dry. My husbands risotto dish was a little overpowering with the sauce. Oysters and spicy shrimp were excellent. Drinks were great and our waiter did his very best to keep checking on us. Overall it was great.
Had another wonderful dinner at Hugo's on New Year's Eve. As always, food, service, and ambiance were outstanding. We were a party of 4, and although the restaurant was booked for the evening, we were not at all rushed by our server during our meal. The steaks and seafood we ordered were cooked perfectly, and the restaurant had plenty of waitstaff and bartenders working - service was fabulous. We have never had a less than excellent experience at Hugo's, and we will be returning soon!
We ordered the Seafood Bisque Soup - Cup- delicious and salad with creamy garlic - delicious.
We ordered the following:
1-order of pan seared white fish with mashed potato, substituted with baked sweet potato (upcharge).
1-order of Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes served with spicy cole slaw with french fries - substituted with baked sweet potato (upcharge).
1-order of grilled faroe salmon served with sweet potato puree with apple sauce and sweet potato straws.
Disappointed there are no substitutes unless you are charged for it.
Over all, service was quick and pleasant and friendly; however, I would have to say I would give a rating of 3-stars as you are able to substitute; however a surcharge...really... due to dietary needs today, you would think they would offer other choices without a charge.
Disappointing in substitute especially a surcharge! Rating overall 3.
Wednesday night dinner for two; dining room was about 3/4 full. Service was slow and unattentive from the beginning, starting with way too slow to initially get to the table and take a drink order. Calamari appetizer was OK, but slightly overcooked -- nothing special. Took forever to get clam chowder; waiter claimed there was a problem in the kitchen. Once the soups finally came out to the table, the entrees came immediately after. We ordered a 10 oz Filet cooked medium and a 14 oz. Filet cooked medium-rare. The waiter apparently reversed the cooking temperatures when he placed the order with the kitchen. That said, the 14 oz. Filet came out medium-well and the 10 oz. filet was rare, at best. I sent the undercooked 10 oz. Filet back and the GM brought it back to me charred on the outside and medium-rare at best inside. What the Kitchen did to the Gibsons steaks is a travesty.
To his credit, the GM apologized profusely, but the meal was lost at this point. GM comped a portion of the bill. I still paid far more than this meal was worth.
Bottom line, given Hugo's reputation and price point, I expect far better service and food consistency. This was a very disappointing dining experience at Hugos.
We realize Christmas Eve is busy but to finally get your cold food by 8:30, (our reservation was at 7), and also being the only table in the front dining room occupied (other families were long gone) left us with a bad taste in our mouths. Usually service is excellent, but our waiter seemed to either be on something or unaware on how to move food along. He kept saying it was coming shortly, but we're guessing he didn't put it in on a timely manner or did put it in but it was up at the same time as our salads, so it sat cold. We were so hungry by then we just ate our food & couldn't wait to leave. Guess we need to consider eating before 7 next time.
We enjoy Hugo's for special occasions. It is a little pricey for everyday eating out. On this visit, the food was outstanding and the service was very attentive. They were also able to accommodate our daughter's vegan preferences. We have never been disappointed when we dine at Hugo's.
Bad experience for lunch. Food so-so, service so-so, nothing special for sure. Good grief, $16.25 for a martini!!!
Nevertheless, Hugo's had a large lunch time crowd of, apparently, uncritical diners.
Too many other fine Naperville restaurants ... won't be back for a long time, or never.
