Hugo's Frog Bar & Chop House - Des Plaines Ratings and Reviews
it must be hard to create a sense of ambiance and excellence, adjacent to a suburban casino, but we went there for a great cocktail and a great steak, as anticipated from Hugo's /Gibson's. The bartender held the image and service anticipated, but when you pay top dollar for a great steak, you anticipate the over-the-top service you are paying for, with attentive staff and fantastic sides ( so-so, and promoted heavily by our waitress, who never asked ). And then, in the end, I a assume the staff and bus boys would be there promote desert (disappeared) and coffee upon conclusion of our meal. but the 10 minute delay, when we were in a slight hurry, after the 3 1/2 star meal ( anticipating 5 star from Gibson) put a slight damper on pleasant conversation we were having with our waitress, and I skipped coffee because time did not allow. Again, it must be difficult to maintain your high standards adjacent to a suburban casino.
We had a great celebration dinner here for my husband ‘s 60th Birthday. We ordered a shrimp cocktail and a calamari which were fabulous. I had a pork chop that was outstanding. My husband and son both had rib eyes that were great. We had delicious cocktails too. The service was excellent. Thanks
The experience we had (a party of 6) was very good. The food and service were excellent. Wish they had better dessert menu choices. Even though the desserts were delicious, because they are so HUGE the whole table had to agree on one choice. In our party of 6, that was not possible, so we ended up ordering 2 desserts which was WAY to much dessert and pricey.
We have made it a tradition to go to Hugo’s every year on Christmas Eve. We started the year they opened. Our kids do the in law thing which left us by ourselves. We mentioned it to some othe people in the same situation and now they join us. The food can’t be beat. The filet is amazing and the seafood is out of this world. Martinis are the best and the desserts are to die for. Then when we are done with dinner we play in the casino a while.
It was my mother's birthday, which I put in the reservation but was not mentioned during our dinner. The service was great. The food is very good, but the portions are very large which drive prices up. I would frequent this restaurant more if portion sizes and related prices were lower. My mom and I split the smallest filet - 10 oz. No one needs 10 oz of edible protein themselves, that is a lot of food. Our bill consisted of 2 glasses of wine and an ice tea, one appetizer to split, and two entrees between three people, and the price was $180 before tip. Seems a bit steep for two entrees a drink and an app. I would recommend to a friend with a caveat that be prepared to spend double what you normally would.
Wine list is frankly terrible. At the $50 price point for main dishes, you expect better wines. We ordered scallops and whitefish - both excellent. But if you don't care for overpriced Chardonnay from California - over priced even by restaurant standards, you have very few alternatives - all rubbish. The pick of the litter is a $75 bottle of Cloudy Bay. Come on, we expect more from a good restaurant. In summary -the wines are below average and overpriced.
The service is good to very good. The food quality is very good. Portions are gigantic. They have a formula and it works for them.
Terrible. First of all, very difficult to locate restaurant. Secondly, I requested a table not a booth on Open Table and also when restaurant confirmed over phone - we were initially taken to a booth and had to back track and wait for a table. Next the server never smiled and was surly and not at all customer oriented. The food was bland at best. Could Hugo's fit any more people into the dining room? We were table on top of table and the noise was deafening. I have no idea how people get around the tables if seated in the center. We will NEVER return. Over priced, lousy food, crowded atmosphere.
Hugo’s was a great dinner spot without having to leave the casino. Great on a cold night when celebrating dinner. Portions for most things are great although the size of vegetables seem tiny as compared to potatoes. Glad I made a reservation as it was crowded. Great service & unbelievable desert.
As I have said several times before Hugo's is a great place to have a business lunch or any meal. Food is always consistently great and the service is tops. Francia, our server on several occasions, is very pleasant and a sees we lack for nothing and that we are satisfied with the food.
Once again try the blackened salmon sandwich (I ordered mine open faced), tons of yummy fries. Soup of the day was beef barley which was delicious. Super service. Around 12:30pm during the weekday it is really crowded with business lunches, so a reservation is suggested!
