Hugo's Frog Bar & Chop House - Des Plaines Ratings and Reviews
It was my mother's birthday, which I put in the reservation but was not mentioned during our dinner. The service was great. The food is very good, but the portions are very large which drive prices up. I would frequent this restaurant more if portion sizes and related prices were lower. My mom and I split the smallest filet - 10 oz. No one needs 10 oz of edible protein themselves, that is a lot of food. Our bill consisted of 2 glasses of wine and an ice tea, one appetizer to split, and two entrees between three people, and the price was $180 before tip. Seems a bit steep for two entrees a drink and an app. I would recommend to a friend with a caveat that be prepared to spend double what you normally would.
Wine list is frankly terrible. At the $50 price point for main dishes, you expect better wines. We ordered scallops and whitefish - both excellent. But if you don't care for overpriced Chardonnay from California - over priced even by restaurant standards, you have very few alternatives - all rubbish. The pick of the litter is a $75 bottle of Cloudy Bay. Come on, we expect more from a good restaurant. In summary -the wines are below average and overpriced.
The service is good to very good. The food quality is very good. Portions are gigantic. They have a formula and it works for them.
Terrible. First of all, very difficult to locate restaurant. Secondly, I requested a table not a booth on Open Table and also when restaurant confirmed over phone - we were initially taken to a booth and had to back track and wait for a table. Next the server never smiled and was surly and not at all customer oriented. The food was bland at best. Could Hugo's fit any more people into the dining room? We were table on top of table and the noise was deafening. I have no idea how people get around the tables if seated in the center. We will NEVER return. Over priced, lousy food, crowded atmosphere.
Hugo’s was a great dinner spot without having to leave the casino. Great on a cold night when celebrating dinner. Portions for most things are great although the size of vegetables seem tiny as compared to potatoes. Glad I made a reservation as it was crowded. Great service & unbelievable desert.
As I have said several times before Hugo's is a great place to have a business lunch or any meal. Food is always consistently great and the service is tops. Francia, our server on several occasions, is very pleasant and a sees we lack for nothing and that we are satisfied with the food.
Once again try the blackened salmon sandwich (I ordered mine open faced), tons of yummy fries. Soup of the day was beef barley which was delicious. Super service. Around 12:30pm during the weekday it is really crowded with business lunches, so a reservation is suggested!
Hugo's and the entire Gibson's group are just outstanding with, impeccable service, generous servings, and the highest quality product. Get the chopped liver app and lobster bisque. I didn't get it but wish I got the twice baked potato after I saw it... The size of a small roast!
It may haven been an unusually busy day, but I felt that the place was a bit over-crowded. It was very difficult getting in and out of the place and our waitress had a hard time getting to us. So much so, that it felt that she didn't think it was worth checking in on us frequently. Additionally, she had another table she was waiting on that had 8 people who were ordering a lot of wine. I don't know if she thought there would be a better tip involved, but she spent the entire night at that table and ignored all others.
The food itself was bland and flavorless. For an upscale restaurant, I would expect items like the lobster bisque to include actual lobster and the house salad to be a bit more then a bag of salad you would find in any grocery store. My wife had the halibut which was pretty small and I had the bone in sirloin that was very tough and chewy (and I ordered a medium-rare, but received a medium-well). The lone saving grace was the asparagus that we ordered which was grilled to perfection and flavored with a lemon-butter sauce that was really great.
