House of Prime Rib Ratings and Reviews
This place always delivers. When you do something well, stick to it. They have the process nailed down and it really is the best prime rib ever. Our server was outstanding, too. My only very minor complaint is that it takes a long time to get drinks from the bar. They need to figure that out for sure. But its our annual family dinner that never disappoints.
The service was very good our waiter was very attentive. The House Of Prime Rib is well known for the best Prime Rib in the Bay Area, however on this visit I would rate the meat as good. The beef wasn’t seasoned as well as my previous visits. I believe the cut of beef may have been a choice grade instead of prime. I believe their prices are extremely high. The cost would be justified if they added a lobster tail to the entree. Everyone in our party of five said the food wasn’t as excellent as previous visits. The food was good but we expected excellent.
What a treat to visit again for our mutual birthday celebrations. How comforting to know that the place remains the same from year to year. Like visiting older family members during festive times. There's nothing like dining on fantastic prime rib with all the trimmings. Great bar and lively bartenders too! Heck, you don't have to find a place to park. Attendants take care of that for a very modest price. Can't wait for our next House of Prime Rib adventure.
Come here for incredible tasting prime rib. You will not leave hungry. My wife and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. In hindsight I would have picked a different restaurant for this occasion since it’s not quiet and romantic, but after 25 years being well fed is not a bad thing either.
The House of Primerib is an institution that we have patronized for 30 years. It has become increasingly popular and it is difficult to get reservations. Reserved 3 months in advance. Seated in the traffic pattern. Couldn't get the famous cornbread. Asked twice and management came and tried to intimidate us. Noise level off the walls. Have put tables in the waiting area so no place to wait. Beef is still wonderful. Management seems to be trying to seat more people all the time. Expect sidewalk dining next.
Another outstanding dining experience at HoPR, after watching the Blue Angels perform their thrills and smelling that jet fuel exhaust, just made that succulent Prime Rib taste even better. Kellie, our server, Chef Tony who carved the beef, superb jobs! God Bless America.
Food is always delicious and service is always excellent. A step back in time to great restaurants of a previous generation. If only more restaurants could master food and service the way House of Prime Rib has done. They are a true gem in San Francisco. One of our favorite places to eat.
Food is always terrific but service this time around was not so great. Waiter took a long time getting the check to us and a long time to bring back the paid transaction. He was helping other tables that weren’t assigned to him. Customer behind us was getting irritated because his food was taking longer to get to him.
My wife and I have been going to this SF dining institution since we were 18...we celebrated her 48th birthday at "House" this past Friday. You do the math. All i can say is that House of Prime Rib (HoPR) is a case study in "do one thing, and do it perfect". They simply have perfected what they do and I often tell people that in one meal I get to eat:
the best sour dough bread in SF
the best salad I've ever eaten (yes salad...I've gone just for the salad)
the best Prime Rib I've ever eaten
the best creamed spinach I've ever eaten
the best mashed/whipped potatoes I've ever eaten
That's a lot of best all to be found in a single meal at one restaurant. Yes it's that good.
The only draw back to the entire restaurant is that old Yogi Bera-ism "Nobody goes there anymore because it's too crowded". I remember the days when I could get a reservation for 2 on the spur of the moment or just a few days out. No more. You better book a large party 2-3 months in advance and dinner for 2 at least 3-4 weeks out.
I do want to gives special thanks to the restaurant for holding our reservation for our party of 8 for an hour. We were held up at my dad's Dr. appointment unexpectedly and the staff were gracious to hold the table for us.
House of Prime Rib is a well known establishment serving fine prime rib for many decades. The prime rib was tender and juicy and the gravy was delicious. It was a very enjoyable meal. This place is quite busy for dinner so reservation is highly recommended. Parking in the neighborhood is very limited but valet parking is available at the curb ($14)
I have frequented the HOP over the years. It has been quite a while since my last visit. This time around was a major disappointment. The costs have risen greatly, but the food and management have declined. I've read other reviews on the web that say there is a noticeable difference since Gus the former manager passed away. I absolutely agree! He ran that place with class and a sense of precision that no longer exists at the HOP.
Food was amazing!! Service was great and the only negative I had was that I told the person checking us in that we had 2 birthdays on our table and he said he would let our waitress know but did not .. so they didn't recognize the special occasion... :(..
but it was good otherwise..
Our server Vic was very professional. He explained the menu well, presented our "spinning salad" elegantly and entree with accompliments nicely and made our dinner special.
The Prime Rib was cooked perfectly to our requests. Side dishes of creamed spinach and mash potatoes were yummy but the creamed corn was disappointing and not very fresh tasting.
We all took left overs home in cute little House of Prime Rib plasticred handled bags. My only complaint was when our plates were taken off the table to place in the take home containers, the staff person quickly and sloppily scraped all the food off the plate (like one would do scraping it into a garbage container) piling all the food ontop of each other. It looked horrifying for a "fine dining" restaurant and SO unprofessional. (This is only one individual- not all staff).
Also the noise level was exceptional noisy from the staff workers speaking very loudly throughout our dining. Perhaps they could find a way to communicate to each other across the dining rooms without yelling.
My husband had been here 50 years before and wanted to revisit the experience. He was not disappointed! The ambience was great, although it was quite noisy. The meal was great! Don't bother if you don't like prime rib, as that is all there is on the menu. What else would you expect, since it is "The House of Prime Rib"! The wait staff was attentive and very professional.
Slipped on the floor since there was no signage or warning about the change in flooring from carpet to hardwood. Waitress rushed us through our meal, clearing plates before we were done. Never came back to ask us how things were or refilling our drinks. Didn't offer coffee or dessert. Boyfriend got king Henry cut and it was almost 60% fat and gristle.
Finally made it to House of Prime Rib after living in the Bay Area for 8 years. Great cocktails to start, and SO MUCH food. It actually is very worth the price.
Included in the price, is the steak itself + salad + yorkshire pudding + your choice of creamed corn or spinach + your choice of baked or mashed potatoes.
Other than the value, the service was great. And it was just a lovely evening overall. Easy valet up front which I would recommend.
