House of Prime Rib Ratings and Reviews
Seated 20+ minutes after reservation. Slow service when seated. Huge gap between salad course and rest of meal. Missed part of order. Cocktails (esp. old fashioned) not great. Food was fantastic. Wish we could have enjoyed it to its fullest instead of making the best of everything else.
The House of Prime Rib is a special place. When my date and I walked in, we felt like we just walked into a different world. The place was bustling with a fun vibe. We had 9pm reservations on a Tuesday night, and when we checked in, we were told that they were running behind and we would be seated by 9:15. No problem. Had a great drink at the bar.
Once we were seated, our waiter was very attentive and answered any questions we had with enthusiasm. Because it’s such a fancy, classy place, I thought everything would be a la carte, but the price includes all of the sides which makes it a very good value. For $45-$50 per person, you get a good-sized basic but yummy salad prepared at the table, choice of creamed corn or creamed spinach. We both got the spinach which had little bits of smoked bacon... super delicious. Choice of mashed potato and gravy or a HUGE fully loaded baked potato (both were awesome). The prime rib...I ordered the petite cut which was too big for me to finish. It was in the perfect amount of au jus sauce and super tender and tasty. My date ordered the house cut which included the bone. We both got medium rare and they were cooked to perfection. Best prime rib. I wish prime rib was always that good. We didn’t have much room for dessert but wanted to order something light. We had...I forgot the name... but it had berries with a Grand Marnier custard sauce at the bottom and little bits of cake. It was perfect. A fun place for a date or a big party. There were plenty of both. I would highly recommend getting a reservation. The wait for walk-ins seemed a bit long, but there are plenty of cool bars to go to on Polk St while you’re waiting.
Love having my birthday dinner here! I have been coming here for family events since I was little. The food is outstanding-Prime Rib does not get any better!
Two things bothered me this time tho-the room we were seated in had a large party of 30 somethings, and they were so loud that a normal conversation was impossible. The second was the waiter-although he was very pleasant we all felt very rushed. We asked him to slow down which he did to a certain respect but still felt like they were really trying to turn the table. I appreciate prompt service but this was a bit much.
All that said it still was a nice evening with great friends and yummy food!
We have been to house of Prime once before with my parents and everyone enjoyed the meal. My brother was in town this weekend so we checked to see if we could get a reservation for three. My girlfriend and I really hyped the restaurant up and we showed him YouTube videos before we went in. Our server was very awkward and even rude at times. She never checked back in after we got our prime rib. My brother’s prime rib as well as my prime rib was very very fatty and had a huge bone. If we order the King Henry one would expect that if that’s the most expensive cut that one would get the most meat. My girlfriend ordered the house cut and had more meat than me or my brother. We would all say that the meal and the service were very disappointing and we will not be going back.
The core quality that the HOPR delivers is top level consistency. We have been dining here for 40+ years and it is still great. Prices are fair and the bottled wine prices are the best in town.
Young and old love this place. It is truly a San Francisco landmark.
My wife and I's first visit, but definitely won't be our last. In fact, we plan on going back in about 3-4 weeks with some friends. Amazing experience. The Valet parking right out front for only $12 is the way to go. The Prime Rib just melts in your mouth. Save room for dessert, the Crème Brulee and Strawberry Shortcake was wonderful!
The food was superb for me. My husband said his corn was bland and my sister in law said her corn had too much pepper.
The entire service experience was really weird and off. The service was not as normal or upbeat as usual. Our server was not energetic or inviting. It wasn’t the best first impression. He didn’t know how to talk to us either. When we were introduced to our chef, the chef looked at us and left to prepare our food. A “Hi” or “Pleasure to meet you” would’ve been nice. Because of our politeness and patience, our server finally came around to give us respect. I’m glad the food spoke louder than the service. Otherwise, there’s a high chance I wouldn’t be back at all.
Reservations?? WHY BOTHER?
This place is out of control and not in any good way. Waited 40 minutes for a glass of wine while they could not honor our reservation even within 30 minutes of the reservation time. The place was a complete panic with no semblance of order or control. We left, 30 min after our reservation time, there being no apparent possibility of being seated in the next 30 minutes. Parties with reservations 30 min ahead of us had not been yet been seated when we left.
Obviously they do not care about reservations or the service they're offering to reservations. It did not appear that they were seating any reservations, during the time we waited. It seemed the seating was totally random at that point.
I can't recommend making or counting on a reservation at all, particularly if it's later and you're planning on a nice meal.
The noise level and bar area service were unacceptable while waiting.
With later reservations, you're treated to trash on the floor, dirty glassware on all bar tables, filthy restrooms and a colossally poor attitude from all staff together with a colossally overcrowded and noisy scene.
I can't find anything to recommend about this place, although I didn't get to eat there. At that point, I can't really imagine having a nice dinner there - it would be like having dinner on main street at Disneyland on its most crowded days.
We were seated for our 8:30pm reservation at 9:05pm. Apparently, this restaurant has trouble with a group of three as we were seated in a very awkward table that appeared to really be a table for 2. The food was delivered at 9:55pm and, to be honest, was not that great. I was really expecting more and was extremely disappointed with this place. I have experienced tastier prime rib offered as a casino $6.99 special. I had called at about 7:15pm to see if our reservation could be switched from 8:30pm to 8:00pm and was told no, that was fine but they could have let us know at that time they were running 35 minutes behind. There was no place to sit and wait as the bar was packed also. This was a very disappointing experience and we will not be returning.
The hostess was so rude over the phone. I asked her how long is the wait time and she was very short with me, replying “it’s substantial”. That just killed it for me but we were more than half way there already from our two hour drive so ended up dining. The food was salty especially the creamed spinach.
This was my second visit. First time was a magical experience but this time seemed to be a different place - loud, rowdy tables full of tech bros, drunk businessmen, and groups of tourists definitely dampened the atmosphere. Prime rib wasn't as delicious as my first visit - our server was good but seemed rushed as he went through the machinations of our meal. Great value and a very generous martini though.
We use to love coming here but within the past 9 months or so it seems it has gone down hill. Servers are not so friendly...very hot and loud. Taste of salad and prime rib just not the same. Sorry to say we won't be back unless we are craving some average prime rib and lots of noise..
Been dining at House of Prime Rib for 35 years when the plates were rectangular - more food. This time I noticed the plates are round and what I immediately noticed is how fast I went thru the cream spinach and mash potatoes. A very small amount - Major disappointment. Food is always top notch but they definitely cut back on portions . The Crème Brulia for dessert is highly recommended. Also trying to get a reservation is next to impossible - had to make a 2 month in advance reservations. When we want to eat ,it now not a month from now. Just made reservations for Harris Steak House right down the block yesterday for Dec 2 @ 7pm NO PROBLEM. Just as good a food as House of Prime Rib - maybe better on some things, but when you fancy a special meal you want it now not in a month maybe. Like I said in beginning, been a 35 year customer of House of Prime Rib , but this last visit didn't blow are skirt up. Maybe will become a 35 year customer of Harris down the block. HEY House of Prime Rib ARE YOU LISTENING. Make it easier to eat at your place and go back to rectangular plates.
Meal was memorable, service impeccable, attention to detail. Wonderful wine list at reasonable prices. Very good value...salad, potato choice and vegetable choice included with meat cut. The prime rib is fabulous! Save room for fantastic dessert (if you can)!
We love the House of Prime Rib but this visit was a BUST! i had this reservation for 4 months.
Requested back room, booth. We got there earlier. They tried to seat us the first table by the hostess station. I told them I requested a table in the back. We had to wait a bit but not too long. Just requested this from the beginning. After we were seated , we waited to have the server come up and take our drink orders. He was slow and acted like he was doing us a favor to help us. I almost said, Don't you do this for a living? We ordered drinks and dinner. I asked for ice and lemon, never got it. Asked three more times and Bingo, finally got it. When the food came, my prime rib had MORE fat than meat. I waited patiently for the waiter to return. Upon telling him, he said nothing, reached down and took my plate without a word spoken. He went up and spoke with a manager or something. I waited for them to come back
with my food. Nope....My friends kept eating and I had no food. After about 10 minutes, I flagged him down again and said. Are you doing to let them eat and not bring me mine?
he said, I told my manager and walked off. A couple minutes later a man in suit came and brought me a plate, the prime rib was cold. I didn't say anything, I wanted to eat with my friends. After dinner, we ordered more drinks. I ordered a glass of La Crema Chardonnay.
The waiter brought it, but it wasn't the correct wine. I told him and he gave me a dirty look.
He said a couple of times, You want what? He finally took it back and indeed it was not
the wine I ordered. No apology, no nothing. I was frustrated with the service and the quality
of the prime rib. It's expensive and they should not serve you a prime rib with more fat than
meat for $45.00 per plate. I was dissapointted with the way I was treated. It was a shame after
waiting so long for our reservation.
Thy seated us promptly when we checked in for our reservation. Our server was extremely kind and great! This was our second time coming to this place, both times for our anniversary and each service was really good. The food amazing as always. It was a little hard to talk to each other because it was loud but it wasn't a big deal to us.
Last 2 times we were there the service and food was not as good. Our waiter took a long time to serve us.Even the glass of wine that was ordered took about 20 min to get.I was happy that he counted the cash in front of us, because the last time i was there in Sept. I paid most of my bill that was 346.00 in cash and the remainder on my card. When i got the receipt my cash was not credited.Instead i received the full bill again. Not sure if they wanted to pocket the cash, but when she came to get the tip and bill i pointed it out to her. All she said was i might have made a mistake. Really for an upscale place i wouldnt expect this ti happen. This was the 2nd time this has happened.so probably wont be going back again.
We have been eating at the House of Prime Rib for many years. This time we took two friends who had never been there, and they summed up the evening by saying that this was now their new most favorite restaurant in San Francisco. While the food has always been outstanding, this time the meat seemed better than ever. Perhaps that was because we all were quite hungry after spending the afternoon walking around Chinatown on a beautiful, sunny autumn day, or perhaps they have some new meat sources. In any event the meal was outstanding in every way. We'll all be back, Soon.
