About Hourglass Tavern
The Hourglass Tavern is housed in a renovated nineteenth-century brownstone on New York's famed restaurant row. Thirty years ago, each table had a working hourglass: your dinner would take only the time it took for the sand to run down, and theatergoers wouldn't miss the curtain going up.
Today, the Tavern has three intimate floors, each with its own charming personality. The hourglasses are mostly decoration, but if you've got tickets to a Broadway show, they are still used to assure that we'll get you there on time!

Hourglass Tavern Ratings and Reviews
This was the fourth time I was there. This time was with my wife for pre-theater dinner. It was not crowed. We were seated on the third floor and only a couple of other couples were there. We had the rib tips and a pasta dish. Food was good and atmosphere was very casual and friendly.
Tiny place and seated right by door. I told the waiter that I was allergic to peppers and asked about the crab cake which did have peppers. I order another item but when the plate finally come, there were peppers in the sausage. I would think the waiter would realize that and tell me but he did not. We waited a very long time to get our food once ordered. People who came in after us received their meals before us. Then I have to send back the meal. Almost missed the show we were going to see. Don't go.
Had a lovely dinner before heading to a show. The Hourglass has a great prix fixe menu that's reasonably priced. The food was delicious and service top notch. Cozy atmosphere that reminds me a cafe you might find in Europe. And there really are hourglasses at each table. Highly recommend!
Pre-theater, Small, cozy place in historic building. Lots of nice rustic touches. Daughter ordered crab cakes and said they were delicious; my husband had lamb shank that he really enjoyed. I had grilled pork chop that was thin so easily over cooked. It was not bad, just not anything memorable. I saw the grilled chicken coming out to other diners and it it looked just like my pork....plain and grilled. The mashed potatoes were delicious !
This place is great for a pre-theatre meal. Quick service and suitable menu with lots of options for small bites, full 3 course pre-fix dinner or a hearty entree. I went on Halloween and the townhouse was decorated really nicely and the bartenders/servers were dressed for the occasion. Very affordable dining for restaurant row/midtown.
Nice atmosphere. Quieter than most theater district restaurants. Very good menu choices. Some tables are upstairs, so if you’re not into climbing a couple of flights, it’s not for you. But the upstairs rooms have a wonderful ambiance , so it’s worth the flight. I would definitely recommend this place.
Always good food with great special choices. I was really in the mood for the salmon and it really hit the spot.
A lovely vegan dish was prepared for one in my party. The value is unbelievable for being in the theater district. The staff is warm and get to know you if you're there periodically.
The staff is friendly and welcoming. The food is consistently excellent. The service is excellent. And the price is moderate. My only criticism is that the menu is not extensive enough. The only meat dish is grilled chicken breast. Other choices are pork and Talapia, of which I do not eat. They also have some nice pasta dishes that I would prefer as a side, not a main dish. Still what they have, I enjoy.
Went to the Hourglass Tavern immediately after a Broadway show so it was empty when we got there. It is a very small restaurant and they seated us on the first floor. The server was prompt and courteous. Food was average. I have been to other restaurants on restaurant row and the food selection was better.
My friends were from out of town and wanted to meet for brunch in a restaurant near the theatre district. LOVED the ambiance, location, architecture and menu food choices. They were delighted in my recommendation and I looked like the seasoned New Yorker they were expecting! Thank you!
I was looking for a restaurant that served healthy menu items but also was considered trendy. It fit the bill perfectly. The ambience was great and the food was delicious, even for my husband who was relieved to know they had “non healthy” items as well. The staff was courteous and down to earth. A big shot out to our server Jason, who was more than knowledgeable about the dinner menu and helped my husband and I make wonderful choices. We will definently recommend to our friends and be coming back here again!
THE FOOD WAS QUITE GOOD AND NICE PORTIONS, EVEN WITH THE PRICE FIXED DINNER, HOWEVER, THE SERVICE WAS QUITE WEAK AND WE DIDNT EAT OUR DESSERT AND ASKED FOR IT TO BE PACKED UP. I WENT UP TO THE LADIES ROOM AND UPON RETURNING ASKED FOR MY PACKED ITEM WAS GIVEN THE ONLY TAKE OUT I SAW....LATER, AFTER THEATRE I REALIZED THEY HAD GIVEN ME A LEFTOVER CHICKEN (WHICH I DO NOT EAT) OF SOMEONE ELSE, SO I GAVE IT TO A HOMELESS MAN.
We were seated immediately as we arrived at 4:30 p.m. Unfortunately we were seated in a room on the third floor of this walk up. There are no handicap facilities and people should be warned about that. There was one restroom on the third floor and there was a bar on the third floor. I am not aware of the location of the kitchen but most of the food that was served was tepid and at least one order had to be sent back. The food was tasty and the menu was diverse. All in all it was a nice place to meet some old friends have a good conversation and a lite meal. Nothing really special. Not running back to a 3 story walkup.
Beautiful old brownstone building. We reserved a table for 10 and they had us squished into a table that would have sat 6 comfortably, with another group right up against us. This was very disappointing and made for an uncomfortable dinner. We had to move tables around to allow for members of both parties to use the restroom. They shouldn't make reservations if they can't accommodate them.
No hourglass on any table.
The food was good, everyone enjoyed the flavor of their meal.
Great food and service! Serves the best bloody mary with lots of horseradish and the smoked trout is yummy! Been a few times for pre-theater...some tight spaces on the first floor and steep stairs to other levels but delightful none the less and the owner has a sense of humor ( check out the signs in the women's restroom!
We really enjoyed this restaurant. Did pre theatre.....service was attentive without rushing us. I had a chicken club which was delicious. My sister enjoyed the roasted fig salad. It is COZY which some may interpret as cramped downstairs, but I didn't mind. There's also outside dining and floors upstairs but we didn't see that. I'd definitely return. Very New York experience. Original.
