About Hourglass Tavern
The Hourglass Tavern is housed in a renovated nineteenth-century brownstone on New York's famed restaurant row. Thirty years ago, each table had a working hourglass: your dinner would take only the time it took for the sand to run down, and theatergoers wouldn't miss the curtain going up.
Today, the Tavern has three intimate floors, each with its own charming personality. The hourglasses are mostly decoration, but if you've got tickets to a Broadway show, they are still used to assure that we'll get you there on time!
3 Course Pre-Theatre Prix-Fixe 4pm-8pm - 23.95. A la Carte & daily specials can be made a 3 course Prix-Fixe with a $10 addition. Brunch is served Saturday & Sunday 11am-3pm w/ Happy Hour priced drinks at $5 & complimentary fresh baked muffins.
"Bettibar" is located on the second floor, offering a gamut of affordable wines, & an array of local and imported beer. The 3rd floor is available for dinner service or private events.

Hourglass Tavern Ratings and Reviews
Online menu looked really nice, so booked for dinner before a show. We let waitress know so we could manage our time. She was nice, but overwhelmed. And service was bumpy - ordered prix fixe but entrees came out without getting salads 1st. We pointed this out, so they took back entrees and brought salads, but no dressing. Seemed they kept our entrees on the warmer. Food was ok I guess. Also, very narrow and tight space, and so noisy we could barely hear ourselves talking. Oh well.
This is an excellent spot for a pre-theatre meal. Food was delicious and fast, and our server was incredibly attentive. Note—some of the searing is up a steep flight of stairs, so if anyone has difficulty climbing stairs, please let them know when you make the reservation. We really loved our meal here.
Absolutely zero wait for our 5pm reservation. Food was excellent, flavorful, and satisfying. Attantion and service was great. Desserts (flan and mousse) were really good. House champagne cocktail was excellent. I read reviews about the stairs, if you know the area and you read the restaurant website you know what to expect, no issues here felt like someones home.
We travelled from Ireland and had a fantastic time at The Hourglass Tavern. I took my wife and daughter for pre theatre dinner and everything was perfect. Greeted by the gent at the door and looked after by a fantastic lady throughout the meal - I didn’t catch her name but her purple hair and bubbly professional manner left a great impression. Service was attentive but not in the least intrusive and we were never rushed - the 2 hours we spent over dinner flew by. Cocktails, wine and food were tremendous and excellent value. Planning a return visit next year with friends for a triple 50th celebration - can’t wait
This is the 4th time we have been there. It was pre-theater and we sat on 3rd floor as we always do. Our server was great and we went with the pre-fixe menu. Food was very good and also very good value. Neat atmosphere. Was not very crowded so it was very quiet.
Had dinner at Hourglass last night prior to going to a show. Service was great, and the food was good. Was a perfect location for us before heading to the theater. We sat on the third floor, which is a cute little cozy room with a bar and maybe about 15 tables. Our waiter was very attentive and we didn't feel rushed or neglected. Will definitely go back to the Hourglass for another pre-theater dinner.
Found this restaurant on a New York website and thought that we would give it a chance after a Sunday matinee. It was within close walking distance of the theater and very quaint and cozy. The pre fixe menu was very affordable and we had a wonderful salad with delicious dressing, fresh baked bread and the grilled chicken and fettuccine Bolognese for dinner with a great tiramisu for dessert. Neither of us could finish our meals so we took our leftovers and the tiramisu to go. With a glass of wine, a beer and both meals, the total is $70 which is unheard of in New York. I highly recommend this restaurant for a date night or a cozy dining experience.
Small place....BIG WIN for us. Great history, owner Josh greeting! The personal touch of it all made us feel welcome from the first minutes there. Food was terrific all served hot. Loved the shrimp and grits. Definitely a repeat place. Waiter courteous and close by. Lucky finds for us.
Second time I have been here recently and I have to say everyone here is so nice. Nice goes a long way with me! They were very accomodating to my group and we all were very happy! The second floor bartender was amazing! Took great care of us, beverages and food!
Came here with the family before going to see Wicked. As soon as we walked in the waitress was so warm and welcoming, made us feel comfortable. Loved the ambiance of the place and love the history. The food?? Was amazing!! Had the beet salad, very refreshing and for main entree I had the crab cake, delish! Can't wait to go back again.
Hourglass was perfect for what we needed, which was dinner before a show - they pride themselves on that - so it worked out. The food was very good - the drinks were excellent - server was lovely. Not an exciting menu, but I expect everything is very good - it's very small - we sat outside in the enclosed vestibule, which was actually fine, because it was quieter and private.
I would certainly recommend for that need - not for a super-special occasion.
The restaurant is in a quaint brownstone with three floors. The climb to the third floor is worth it for the quiet ambiance we experienced. The waitress was sociable and attentive and the food was delicious. The prix fixe dinner was very affordable and the food choice was adequate. We were there for a "before show" dinner and would definitely go again. Thanks for a lovely meal.
This restaurant made a great date! We were celebrating, and they even gave us a glass of champagne to help make the night celebrate. The restaurant was small and cozy, although I believe there is an upstairs. The restaurant is one I would definitely revisit - the food was amazing, the staff was friendly, the atmosphere was comfortable, and we loved our visit.
While not the most comfortable restaurant, the value, service and quality of the food make it a good choice for a pre-theater dinner. Maybe sitting upstairs (rather than ground floor) would be more comfortable, but although I made a reservation, was told you needed to request upstairs to secure a table.
I have had brunch many times in Hell’s Kitchen but this place was a lucky find thanks to yelp! Though my friend and I had never eaten here before the reviews were great and the menu looked delicious. We were NOT disappointed! I had the steak and eggs and my friend had the fish cake Benny and we both loved what we chose. Everything was hot, super fresh and made to order. We really enjoyed the mango mimosas and the casual cozy atmosphere upstairs. The instruments on the wall were a creative touch! Our server (Jonny?) and the lovely bartender were very attentive and friendly without being overbearing and we didn’t feel rushed at all, quite the contrary. They took exceptional care of us and we were having such a great time we ended up being the last ones to leave! We will definitely be back!
