About Hourglass Tavern
The Hourglass Tavern is housed in a renovated nineteenth-century brownstone on New York's famed restaurant row. Thirty years ago, each table had a working hourglass: your dinner would take only the time it took for the sand to run down, and theatergoers wouldn't miss the curtain going up.
Today, the Tavern has three intimate floors, each with its own charming personality. The hourglasses are mostly decoration, but if you've got tickets to a Broadway show, they are still used to assure that we'll get you there on time!
3 Course Pre-Theatre Prix-Fixe 4pm-8pm - 23.95. A la Carte & daily specials can be made a 3 course Prix-Fixe with a $10 addition. Brunch is served Saturday & Sunday 11am-3pm w/ Happy Hour priced drinks at $5 & complimentary fresh baked muffins.
"Bettibar" is located on the second floor, offering a gamut of affordable wines, & an array of local and imported beer. The 3rd floor is available for dinner service or private events.

Hourglass Tavern Ratings and Reviews
While not the most comfortable restaurant, the value, service and quality of the food make it a good choice for a pre-theater dinner. Maybe sitting upstairs (rather than ground floor) would be more comfortable, but although I made a reservation, was told you needed to request upstairs to secure a table.
I have had brunch many times in Hell’s Kitchen but this place was a lucky find thanks to yelp! Though my friend and I had never eaten here before the reviews were great and the menu looked delicious. We were NOT disappointed! I had the steak and eggs and my friend had the fish cake Benny and we both loved what we chose. Everything was hot, super fresh and made to order. We really enjoyed the mango mimosas and the casual cozy atmosphere upstairs. The instruments on the wall were a creative touch! Our server (Jonny?) and the lovely bartender were very attentive and friendly without being overbearing and we didn’t feel rushed at all, quite the contrary. They took exceptional care of us and we were having such a great time we ended up being the last ones to leave! We will definitely be back!
A pre-theater dinner favorite of mine for more than 20 years. On a street over populated with swanky bars, great grills and theater steak houses – I still like the hourglass best. It’s like Sitting in my grandmothers kitchen, literally. The first floor tables are tiny and Cozy, but for more space there’s now a third floor available with service just as responsive and quick for an early exit for curtain. The food is rich and tasty and you can’t beat the value for a prix-fixe combo, if you don’t mind limited choices on the menu. With the signature hourglasses to literally keep you on schedule, I will continue to return because it feels like ‘coming home.’
Cozy little place, the staff was very accommodating to us as we increased our party size. The staff was very sweet to take our coats and baggage since we were on our way to the airport. The chicken vegetable soup was amazing on a cold winter day. Highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for great food and ambience.
We made a reservation for a special dinner after seeing a show as our family christmas present. We had never been there and did not realize how small it was and that for a party of 7 we'd have to sit on the third floor. My mother in law does not walk well and had a hard time getting up and down the stairs. We also picked this restaurant because it said gluten free options but there was no gluten free pasta which significantly decreased the amount of options on the menu when sandwiches were already eliminated as well. There were basically 1 or 2 entree options that could be made gluten free and that meant no sauce so the meat was extremely bland and dry. The wines by the glass list was also very limited with only about 4 red options as they were also out of some regularly on the menu. Overall the family enjoyed the meal but for a special occasion in our one night out in the city, it was a disappointment.
Friendly, casual atmosphere with great ambience. Service was efficient and still friendly. Excellent for a good value meal for pre or post theatre. My 10 year old granddaughter, a picky eater, was able to find something she liked. Ease of proximity and timing for a relaxing meal prior to a show will make this restaurant a regular selection for me, as well as a regular recommendation. The Hourglass on the wall was a nice touch.
This restaurant was the worst I ever had in NY... "burgers" with only bread and steaks and... nothing else... disgusting, and the boss named Betti just doesn't care about it !!! Go away you won't find worst !! ( and sanitary control is B)
When we arrived, we found our table had been given to another party who misrepresented themselves. The manager went out of her way to secure a table for us after realizing their mistake. After complimentary drinks at the bar, we were seated and greeted by a delightful server. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the service; and our complimentary dessert! Thank you, Hourglass!
Located along Restaurant Row, this cozy pre-theater spot is a find. We visited on one of those frigid and windy late December '17 nights. The first floor was comfortable with the open kitchen nearby. We were seated right away and had the option of 2nd or 3rd floor seating. The staff was friendly, informative, and attentive. I would recommend the Hourglass for locals and for those out-of-town theater goers.
Hourglass Tavern has it all - great food, great atmosphere and great service!! Everything was delicious and the staff made it even more special!! We were a party of 8 on Christmas Eve. Between all of us - we had a variety of dishes and everything was fabulous!!
My friends and I had gone for Christmas Eve, It was excellent, the food was great and full of flavor. I had the Christmas ham which was wonderful. The service was great, the young lady was attentive and made us feel welcome. My guest and I would highly recommend it.
I remember the hourglass from when I lived in New York 17 years ago, I am glad it has not changed and still one of the best restaurants and values in the city.
We were visiting NYC on a family vacation and the staff were so accommodating to our family of 5. We were seated in the very quaint heated "bubble room" and served by a wonderful waitress who gave great food and wine recommendations. Fresh bread, great appetizers and wonderful comfort food entrees made for a great NYC memory!!

I've been coming here every christmas season for the past 7 or 8 years for a get together with friends. Food is very good and everyone is very friendly.
Keep it up.
See you next holiday season....
....or hopefully sooner.

We had a wonderful meal with wonderful service! We were seated on the main level and it is tiny; there is an upper level, but since one of us uses a cane to get around, we could not have done this and we never saw it, the seating there may be more expansive. Our reservations were relatively early and we were definitely comfortable. As the restaurant became more crowded, it was a bit tight. The food was excellent - the prix fixe menu is perfect. Service was above and beyond - everything was prepared perfectly and our waitress could not have been more helpful and professional. We will definitely return - it is a short walk from many broadway theaters to this restaurant row location!
This was our first time here for our annual holiday jaunt into the city. We knew going in it would be a rough go and that given the holiday rush, we might feel rushed. The absolute opposite was true! As it turned out, WE had our trains suspended and were 1/2 hour late. The amazing host set our friends up in the bar area and gave them a FREE cheese platter to keep them happy!
Our server was OUTSTANDING! So on top of everyone's needs. This place is TINY, but somehow we felt so comfortable and at home. Very warm environment. I would not recommend for anyone with a physical disability as the stairs are steep, but thankfully, we were all fine.
Food was very good-soup was definitely homemade and excellent, beet salad was VERY generous and delicious. I loved my entree-shrimp over polenta. Two of our guest were less enthused about crab cakes and the Bolognese. For dessert, the tiramisu was ok, tasted like buttercream was used in the center rather than whipped cream. The chocolate chili mousse, however, was TO DIE FOR!
Overall a really lovely experience! We will definitely be back :-)
Had dined several times here in small parties. Booked a table for 12 for a special occasion and it was excellent. The owner herself called to discuss the arrangements! The food here is consistently good. Service very friendly. Also it's very charming. Highly recommend!
The Hourglass Tavern is a go-to restaurant when we want to enjoy a delicious, hearty meal when in the theater district. The portions are generous and tasty, and an outstanding value for NYC. The ambiance is unpretentious and friendly. Not a 'trendy' spot, it is comfortable and consistent. Our favorite when in the city!
What a little gem of a neighborhood place
We went to the Hourglass on the recommendation of a friend and we loved its cozy charm. We sat in the window seat and it was just lovely and the waitress/hostess could not have been more welcoming and enthusiastic about our being there. My sister and I got small plates of spicy chicken meatballs and they were light, nicely spicy and the tomato sauce was delicious, as was the bread for dipping. My nephew had a grilled cheese and bacon on rosemary focaccia and loved it, especially the homemade mashed potatoes on the side. Excellent house wine and craft beer choices and the staff did everything in their power to make us feel at home. Definitely on the go-to list for the theater district.
Have worked nearby for years. Do not know how I've not been here before. It is cute, quaint and quirky. The place is a converted brownstone, with a small restaurant on first floor, a cute, whimsical bar/lounge on second, and more restaurant seating on the third. Decor was eclectic, and all the features of staircases and molding are intact. Service was attentive without being pushy. The menu is pretty good, lots of choices. They offer a prix fixe menu for $23.95 for dinner. That is not a typo. Soup or Salad, choice of six entrees and dessert. If you want something off the regular menu, you can make it prix fixe for $10 more. The prices are exceptionally low for this area of Manhattan. Salmon was $16.95. I asked to replace quiona with mashed potatoes, no problem. Portion was generous. Glass of Rose just $8. The food arrived piping hot, and everything was very good. Definitely going back and bringing friends.
