Perfect For:
  • Pre/post Theatre
  • Cozy
  • Neighborhood Gem
The Hourglass Tavern is housed in a renovated nineteenth-century brownstone on New York's famed restaurant row. Thirty years ago, each table had a working hourglass: your dinner would take only the time it took for the sand to run down, and theatergoers wouldn't miss the curtain going up.

Today, the Tavern has three intimate floors, each with its own charming personality. The hourglasses are mostly decoration, but if you've got tickets to a Broadway show, they are still used to assure that we'll get you there on time!

3 Course Pre-Theatre Prix-Fixe 4pm-8pm - 23.95. A la Carte & daily specials can be made a 3 course Prix-Fixe with a $10 addition. Brunch is served Saturday & Sunday 11am-3pm w/ Happy Hour priced drinks at $5 & complimentary fresh baked muffins.

"Bettibar" is located on the second floor, offering a gamut of affordable wines, & an array of local and imported beer. The 3rd floor is available for dinner service or private events.

What a gem of a place...warm, friendly staff, charming decor and history, great food and service... I’m keeping this my little secret for now!

I made a reservation for 5:15pm. I was seated promptly and ordered off the prix fixe menu. I was brought bread and a salad, which were quite yummy! However, much time passed and I never saw my entree. In addition, my water was never refilled, and the bartender was stemmed overwhelmed/was more occupied with those ordering alcoholic beverages than his assigned tables. Two tables that were seated ahead of me with multiple peoples at their table received their entrees. I waited for an hour and finally left.

Decent food at reasonable prices, within walking distance of most theaters near Times Square.

Great at getting you to your play on time. Good, friendly service. Cool space with three levels. Bathrooms clean. Food is mediocre at best. Pork chop over cooked. Beef sliders over cooked. Mashed potatoes flavorless. They might have been instant. Wanted to love the place, but food needs help.

If you're looking for a non traditional place to dine in the theater district..it is the Hourglass Tavern. It is hip and has a unique brunch pre theater menu. It is three floors, so if you have strong legs, the second and third floor are for you, otherwise stay on the first floor to dine.

Food was very good and reasonable for mid town west, good variety for all (we had one semi vegetarian diner). The waitress/hostess was great and extremely professional.

We had a good meal here with good service, it was my Mom's favorite on our trip. The value for the quality of food was great. A great place to eat before a Broadway show. It didn't feel like a tourist chain which was nice considering Times Square is full of them. I recommend it.

Went here for a quick bite before seeing a show at Wilson Theatre. Wanted something closer to eight avenue side of Times Square that was north of 45th street. My niece and I were tired of the same old theater restaurants so we wanted to try something new and also fairly healthy. This was our first time here and we'd definitely go back. Please be aware, this is a very tight restaurant with three skinny floors and with no wheelchair access (that I saw) unless you're sitting in the front two tables. If your party is on the larger (literally both in the amount of people and size-wise) it might be difficult to squeeze in. My niece had the grilled chicken, broccoli, and mashed potatoes. I had the coconut rice, tilapia, and broccoli. Both dishes were delicious, came out in a timely manner, and were fairly priced considering portion-size and expensive midtown area. I would come back here again, especially because the service is so cordial.

Quaint and cute location; good specialty drinks; food ok -- nothing really special. Went post theater. The host seated us even though we were about 20 minutes earlier than our reservation. Main seating on first level tiny but cute; second floor bar looked like it could be fun; third level dinner seating elegant but not pretentious. Crafted cocktails were really tasty and different; server was animated, helpful, professional. Had two entrees -- neither was particularly good or bad -- average. Would I go back? Maybe for drinks and a bite, but probably not for dinner -- too many other good options both in the neighborhood and around town.

Overall a pleasant experience with very good food at a reasonable cost.
We went here for lunch before a Saturday matinee. This restaurant is located on restaurant row in a narrow multi story walk up. Each level was narrow and accessed by stairs only. No ADA compliance here! Roomier on the third floor than the first. Second level is a bar setup not in use at the time we went. Each floor has its owner waiter and stocked bar.
Companion had a chicken Caeser salad she liked very much. I had the Benedict Florentine and enjoyed the mix of flavors and it was very well prepared.
Highly recommended for a nice, quiet meal.

A friend and I dined pre-theater at The Hourglass Tavern. It's a busy place at that time of day but the hostess and our server were fantastic. Very friendly and helpful not only with our order but with little things like pulling out the table and helping with our coats. The food is a great value for the Theater District and darn good, too. The building is a classic and harkens back to the Golden Age of the Broadway theater...which is a wonderful thing in this age of tearing down and building up. There is a lively happy hour at Betti Bar (have enjoyed that previously). In the old days (when I was young and aspiring actress), we'd go there for blue fish and they would actually time your meal with an hour glass. That practice is no more but hence the name and hour glasses as decor. Always a solid, tasty meal that satisfies both deep pockets and struggling artists. Thanks so much to all!

Surprisingly good, and incredible prices. While the tourists are lined up for terrible food over at Times Square, this little gem on the old Restaurant Row dishes up really good cooking and caring service. Service is fast enough to get you to the play in time, while not feeling rushed. Strongly recommend -- try the penne mascarpone or the NY strip dinner.

I love Hourglass Tavern! I've been back four times now-and I've never been disappointed. My food came out so hot I couldn't even eat it-which is pretty spectacular. I'll be returning in May-no doubt about it!

Bad service. The waitress was stressed out and made us feel like we were an inconvenience . Her manner was rude and we were made to sit and wait until she was ready for us to order... by the way she wasn’t busy with her job she was eating. We also sat forever with our empty plates in front of us.. We were seated on the third floor. Small , but cozy.. the food was ok. Entire experience was ruined by the mean, menopausal waitress.such a shame. Will never return.

We will go back. Two adults and four teenagers. Something on the menu to appeal to every taste. Told them what time our curtain was and they insured that we would be able to make it. The trek up the stairs was pretty tough for me but I would do it over again over again over again. Delightful servers excellent food -go there.

Great service and very good food in this “sliver” of a spot on restaurant row. Tight quarters at this 3 story eatery, so be prepared to get up close and personal with your neighboring diners. Good news is that the food is good enough that they might share!
