Hornblower Cruises & Events - San Diego Ratings and Reviews
I upgraded my meal and was very disappointed in what I got for the money. The veggies were not cooked and the meat portion was tiny and over cooked for what was paid. Absolutely incredible service and the bay is great scenery, the cost and the less than average experience with the food makes it hard to give high ratings.
On the night after the "Full Moon Cruise" we went on Hornblower's "regular" Thursday night dinner cruise. Still lots of moonlight to be enjoyed on deck and the menu appeared to be the same with similar appetizer, entree, drink and dessert upgrades available for a price. Don't know if there was a price differential but the crowd was a bit thin. Although there were many celebrators (the couples on either side of us were celebrating a birthday and an anniversary respectively) on board basically no one was willing to get up and dance after dinner. Despite the D.J.s best efforts to lead off and suit the music to the crowd, which ranged from Toddlers to elders confined to wheelchairs, this was not a participatory crowd. The cruise around the bay consisted primarily of the ship doing figure eights back and forth under the Coronado Bridge past the south bay dry docks. Not terribly scenic at night despite the bright moon. In the future, will opt for a shorter daylight cruise to see the sights followed by dinner at one of San Diego's many superior restaurants. The food and service will be less indifferent, the cruise more enlightening and, likely, the total experience cheaper.
The Hornblower Cruise was a comfortable and smooth ride, the night was just perfect for a romantic walk on the deck among the San Diego lights, and the openness of the ship made you feel like you had plenty of room to freely wander. The salmon entrée I had was a surprisingly good portion and cooked to almost perfection with the juices dripping upon the first bite. The wine list had one of my favorites, which made my evening pleasurable (7- Deadly Zins). Dancing was fun, romantic, and who cares if you can't dance a step. The night ended as if you lost a friend when you walked off the ship to find your car. A wonderful dinner and a night out under the stars in style on the cruising waters of San Diego....it was well worth it..
Overrated. Poor banquet food.
Evening cruse 25% of trip with scenic city skyline.
Need to pay extra to get a window seat (in for a minimum of $240 for two) to gain experience.
Credit card required up front and no refunds if cancelled less than 48hr in advance.
This was great for restaraunt week b/c it's 1/2 price- $40 person. For that I was happy with experience; for full price =very disappointed, mostly w/ food quality. Great date anyway b/c you can walk out to the deck and enjoy the view from the harbor, and there's a dance floor inside to enjoy a few slow songs after dinner. They take your pic when you arrive and sell them if you want it- a nice touch.
Food: 3 courses: The salad was the highlight of dinner! I ordered the chicken entree which was good, but simply not amazing. My date ordered the beef which was tough with no flavor, we sent it back for another chicken. Dessert was cheesecake with oreo crust which was ok... good if you really love cheesecake.
We went for our anniversary, which I mentioned when we booked our reservation. They made an announcement of everyone's birthdays and anniversaries and special occasions, which was sweet. However they totally left us out! That's ok.
We love the photo we took before boarding! After dinner, drinks and photos, this Hornblower cruise dinner was quite an expensive affair! The views were incredible, but I wish we left earlier so we could have caught even a moment of the sunset over the water. By the time our boat left dock, the sun had already set. Service was good, but the tables are REALLY close together...A little too close for comfort, especially given that they *could* have spread us out a bit more. Music was wedding-esque. Overall, fun!
I went with my boyfriend and another couple for a fun night out and we had such a great time. The three hour cruise went by so fast with just enough time between food courses so we could walk around the boat and dancing music to fit the crowd. We will be doing another cruise again soon.
Our cruise was on the Hornblower Inspiration. It was too loud/lacking ambiance/blah food to be romantic/nice restaurant. The sound system and lighting were not good enough to make it a really good dance/party cruise. Hornblower needs to decide which way they want to go: Be a high quality/romantic restaurant experience or be a really good dance/party boat. Another option is to tailor one level to be the quiet/classy/romantic experience and the other to be the loud/flashy/thumping party/dance experience. Then ask the customer which experience they want and assign them to appropriate level. We will not be taking another dinner cruises until we hear they have made adjustments like those I have mentioned.
