Horatio's Ratings and Reviews
Once a favorite, the restaurant has slipped. While it was always somewhat noisy, when the food was better that could be tolerated. Most items reeked of garlic that tended to overpower the other flavors. Portions were certainly generous but when the taste is not appetizing, much food gets wasted making the meal expensive and poor value. I do not plan to return to this venue as a result.
We arrived a few minutes after our reservation time and were told that we would have a 15 to 20 minute wait. After about 10 minutes we were shown to a table and given menus (but not a drink menu). Warning sign should have been that ours was the only occupied table in the section. After about 15 minutes of just sitting there we managed to flag down the seater again and told her that we'd not received water, drink menu, bread or even had a waiter at our table. She brought a drink menu and we ordered. Another 15 minutes went by and our drinks and bread finally arrived. We ordered (from the seater -- we never saw an actual waiter the entire evening) and waited another 20 minutes for our food to arrive. My seafood pasta dish was very good, but my wife's stuffed crab was very cold. Her fish was not even completely cooked. After we were finally able to get the attention of the seater again we managed to pay and leave. The good news was that they didn't charge us for my wife's meal. Clearly they are understaffed, which is not acceptable given the prices they're asking. We'll likely not return even though this has been one of our go-to places for special evenings.
The food was great once we received it. Our waitress decided to help a table that was seated well after us before coming to take our order. 4 passes later we received our water, when the other table received their food. When we finally did get our order, she never checked back with us. Another waitress checked on us brought us bread and another drink. The hallway near the restrooms and front entrance reeked of sewage and there was a roof leak in the women's restroom. A reservation used to be needed to get in the door and be seated immediately, but my reservation was not needed as there were only 3 tables in use, and 2 people "one of them being my date" at the bar. I don't live in the area so I hadn't been there in a while. But I was really disappointed to see the place falling apart. Please please please, get it together Hiratio's.
We went on a Friday night, and they were short staffed due to illness. So even though we had a reservation, it took a bit of a wait to get seated. And then when we were seated, it took them forever to just get our drinks, and then forever again to get our food. My 5 YO daughter kept saying how hungry she was and wondering out loud where the food was.
The dishes themselves were mediocre and not worth the price. I had sole stuffed with lobster and crab, and it really needed help. Very bland. Others I went with had the peppercorn salmon (a bit dry), the Mahi mahi (also bland and dry). The best dish was the non-seafood dish, a chicken with pesto penne.
The manager (?) was kind and comped us dessert (creme brûlée) which was pretty good and a key lime pie.
Maybe this place is fun for drinks and appetizers, but not worth the price in my book. Certainly not for dinner. If you want a place along the water with similar food choices, I'd go to Kincaid's in Oakland, where the food is better in my opinion. Sorry, Horatio's--I was really hoping to love it.
“Hurrah” to our Server who ended up saving the dining experience. Our group of 5 with a 6:15pm reservation were seated and ignored for too long a time. We discussed leaving when the assigned server to our table finally came by and he apologized saying he’d be back shortly to assist us. We observed the restaurant section was not even 1/2 full. Again we waited a long unexceptable amount of additional time when my husband asked the server who finished assisting a table next to ours if she could take our order. She said yes and expressed her apologies to us after we shared why we asked her to take over. She was pleasant, upbeat, great smile and had a wonderful attitude about what she just took over.
Horatio's is a destination restaurant for us several times a year. The food can be hit or miss -- I had the Seafood Fettuccine on our latest visit and these calories were sublime with eating decadence. It arrived hot, too! My companion enjoyed the Ravioli accompanied by a shortrib -- it was tasty but did not escort the taste buds to any crescendos of pleasure. The bread is a must -- warm and oozing with comfort. The consistent and biggest barrier that prevents this eatery to be five star quality are the service associates. They read their scripts well, smile on cue, but there appears to be little or no desire to help their customers truly experience a great dining interlude.
Leann is reason we keep going back. She is amazing.
With reservations your still asked to wait in an uncomfortable area. When you I made reservation I requested a window seat because of an anniversary and still not given it at 5 o’clock it’s very disappointing.
I have been going to Haratios since the early 1980's! We went for special occassions, Birthdays, Anniversaries and just a nice night out! I loved the food and recommended it to anyone who would listen for a nice evening, great food and a special place to go even for a wonderful drink and appetizers! I was extremely disappointed in the food this visit! It was a special Post Christmas lunch for myself and my 93yo Mother, sister and niece! Victor our server and his trainee were very nice and attentive. The appetizers were good, calamari good, oysters tasty but very small, desserts were wonderful but the meal lacked! My ceasar salad was wilted, wet, and look and tasted like it was made hours ago and left out at room temp! My pasta was dried out also like it was made last night, sat out and reheated in a microwave. The shrimp in it was tough and basically the dish was barely warm and very dried out! I was totally disappointed! I don't get to go out often as I am caretaker for my husband after a horrible accident. Haratios was "our" special place and today the food sucked! Totally disappointed and it was "my pick" of restaurants for our lunch today! Maybe because it was the day after Christmas and everyone was tired from the busy big day before but it waz not the Haratios I loved and looked forward to going to! Sorry, I truly love this place and it saddens me to write a bad review but Haratios you are better than this at least I hope you will be the next time I come there! If not I guess I have to find another favorite restaurant.
At the last minute, our Christmas plans changed and we needed a dinner reservation. I guess I should have been suspicious that one was available here but the Christmas menu looked wonderful. I am not a seafood person so was looking forward to the prime rib all day and had a small lunch in anticipation. Our reservations for dinner were early - at 6:15 - so there was no excuse for them to already be out of prime rib that early in the evening. Prime rib was clearly the feature of their holiday menu and they should have erred on the side of having extra at the end of the night instead of running out so early. There wasn’t anything else on the menu that I was interested in so I just went with an appetizer. The server and manager were apologetic and accomodating - they convinced me to order an entree on the house and comped my appetizer. Being primarily a seafood restaurant, i was hopeful that the rest of my party would enjoy their meals but unfortunately the food was not good. The seafood did not appear to be fresh. The crab and spinach dip and oysters were the worst our party has ever had. The baked brie and ravioli were also poor. The best it got for us was a mediocre salmon. As far as ambience, we were seated on the outside patio in deck chairs. While the patio was enclosed in plastic with heaters so not too uncomfortable It was not the Christmas ambience we were expecting.
Christmas dinner with my son. Limited menu was available for the holiday. We ordered prime rib and salmon entrees. My son was very pleased with the salmon. The prime rib was not medium and was fatty and full of gristle.
We both loved the pea salad, and I liked the pear bread pudding.
It was very noisy, many drunks.
Food is good, wish it were outstanding. I had mixed sea food and the clams could not have gotten any smaller. Waitress was good, helpful and attentive. The bread and salads plus the soups are very good. It's the entries that need to be worked on. Great place for lunch, brunch and so so for dinner
I only write about this due to some of the other reviews that give fewer stars. To the person that claims to have been going there since it opened... when was that? Our family docked our sailboat in the harbor outside since Horatio's was the "Blue Dolphin." That's over 50 years!
Sure it's not Alain Ducasse (I've been to 4 of his 3 Star establishments...you won't get in with a last minute call to them). What did you expect for a fixed selection CHRISTMAS Menu?
Prices were reasonable for the occasion and all items were done nicely, and delivered to our table in a timely, well paced manner. Kudos to the kitchen and wait staff.
Meanwhile, for those who have such high expectations for a last minute Christmas dinner. Plan ahead.
Better still, start saving now and plan on calling 3 months in advance just to get your reservations for Thom Keller's French Laundry (plan on $500.00+, add more for a wine pairing menu).
This Dining Experience on this Date was purposed as Christmas Eve Dinner and the experience overall was DREADFUL. The experience began when we were lead to a table that was in an unheated covered area. Makeshift heat was provided by flourescent tube like infrared heat lamps. We sat at this table for 2 minutes and then founde a waiter and asked to be seated at a table inside the restaurant. (So what was Management EVEN THINKING in using tables that were essentially outside? It smacked of "Horatios will cram as many people into its space so as to return a big greedy profit on a HOLIDAY,,,, Bad decision.
The dinner was unremarkable. I had shellfish Fettuccini and the dish had set under a heat lamp for too long and wes pretty dried out. Not good! My dining partner had Braised Lamb Shanks and she said the meat was overdone and not really appetizing. We couldnt get out of that restaurant -- just getting the check quickly was a challenge.
Finally, I think we are done at Horatios for a while. Hopefully you will hire management that are adults and who make competent decisions.
We have always loved our dining experience at Horatio's, however, this visit was not so good. We brought our adult children for a once in 8 year family dinner and the service was poor. I don't know if she was spread thin or what, but it left little to be desired. Maybe the holidays are not a good time to visit. We will go back. Our overall experience in the past has been good.
