Hops & Hominy Ratings and Reviews
Chose this place after reviews on yelp. Place was loud and warm, we were upstairs. Service was slow for a Saturday night and server was not real personable, but ok. Fried Chicken was super moist, but breading fell off. Ribs were tough - needed more time to fall off the bone. Here’s the worst though - my hungry husband ordered hanger steak, expecting a steak - instead it was 4, yes 4, bites of steak laid out on top of veggies. He left hungry for his $25. No bueno!
Fun, casual restaurant. Mac & cheese was surprisingly good. I tend to never order it as it's always overcooked for me. This one was perfect. Brussels sprouts were good, but needed more caramelization. Cornbread was a nice start to the meal, there was a lot of it. Fried chicken was really good. Pork chop just ok. Garnish on the plate was better than actual pork which wasn't seared well and very fatty. All that said, we had a fun time and would dine here again.
Great take on southern food. The food is fresh and bursting with taste. The cocktail, beer, and wine selection are excellent. I had a beer that oozed with a pleasant smokey taste, a great compliment to my food. Everything we ordered tasted great. My only comment is that the waitperson could have been a bit more attentive. But, all in all, this is a great downtown restaurant and bar that is worth a visit.
Biggest critique is that the noise level is more than I would like. There were a number of time my friend and I had to ask each other to repeat. Food was very good, but priced on the high side. Dinner for two with one beer each, shared salad & appetizer, two entrees came to $125. Entrees came out too fast even after asking that they be held until after we finished the salad. But considering everything, it was good! I’d go again.
Bad experience with customer service. I️ sent a full drink back and the waitress still charged me for it. Never have I️ been to a restaurant in San Francisco and had a waitress tell me I’m stuck with something on my bill that I️ did not like and sent back full after 1 sip. All in all this ruined the experience and put a very bad taste in my mouth. Food was good... I️ would have considered going back if it weren’t for the unprofessional waitress.
Decent enough environment. However, if you want southern food which is what they advertise then don't waste your time or money. I'm pretty sure no one involved in this project had been to the Southeast to understand how to cook food that truly represents the South.
Went here with my dad while visiting San Francisco. The atmosphere was really cool and the food was great! We sampled a few beers. I had the ribs, which were amazing, but I wasn't a fan of the potato salad. My dad got the halibut and pretty much devoured it. We had the fried oysters for an appetizer (you also get a baby cornbread!) and they were very fresh. The server was also very responsive to my allergies, which was nice!
Thoroughly enjoyed the food, service and flexibility of the staff and management. The place was recommended and we made the reservation far in advance in anticipation of getting together with friends from overseas that we hadn't seen in 10 years. Upon our arrival and finding the noise level higher than than expected, we were concerned about being able to effectively communicate on 10 years worth of "catching up." Management immediately offered outdoor seating which worked out perfectly. Our server offered many suggestions which were spot on and interacted with us at just the right level - knowing when to shy away from our conversation so as not to interrupt, and knowing when to step in to ensure that our needs were taken care of in a timely manner. We were thoroughly impressed and would highly recommend it to those that are seeking a lively meal within the restaurant, or to those that would like a quieter environment outside, as long as the weather cooperates.
Host was great. Server was really rude. She got annoyed at me bc the host took my drink order. Rolled her eyes at me while walking away because I didn't notice her trying to hand me a drink from over the half wall at the entrance. Not sure what I did, but she really didn't like me. Not a great feeling. My friends didn't get it, either.
Food and drinks were good as usual.
Hops & Hominy was the perfect storm: Amazing service (our Gal was knowledgable about food! And honest); Great ambiance and banging music (R&B, Rock, Prince!) and heavenly food! The table cornbread was just aight but the sweet butter that came with it (light and Lovely!!).
I had the Braised Lamb special (I guess it is not always on the menu). The lamb was perfectly tender and served on a bed of mascarpone grits (wowzer!) with roasted peaches and tomatoes. Stupid good.
Because Im greedy, I was into my girls plate and her mac n'cheese was ridiculous!! Buttery and cheesy the way mac and cheese should be!!
The hot bartender made us some delightful gin drinks to go with our feasts.
Note: Go Here!
A bit hidden away from the main street, you might not find this place down the alleyway, but what a great find! Menu had lots of appealing items from the mac and cheese (which our table shared as an appetizer) to burgers, fried chicken, and a wonderful halibut. Highly enjoyed this place and would definitely return!
