Our dinner was excellent! The macaroni and cheese is the BEST that the five of us have ever had. The pulled pork, fried chicken, catfish and pork chop were all excellent. We also had the black-eyed pea fritters that were out of this world. The hostess and wait staff were friendly and helpful. The gin and jam is a must-have cocktail! Wonderful experience and we can’t wait to eat here again!
We were rushed during our dinner by servers
The food and the space were great. The server was nice but a bit unengaged and distant. When we asked about day specials she said there wasn't any but when we asked about the soup of the day she copped a bit of a defensive attitude saying that it wasn't a 'special'. Then she forgot to bring out bread and never checked back with us, at all; the lack of attention to us became a bit of a joke and so the table next to us ended up sharing their cornbread with us, which was sweet but unusual and shouldn't have been necessary. Don't get me wrong, she was very nice, but overall, comically disengaged. I'd still recommend it as the food and space were fantastic and I could tell other servers were attentive. Enjoy!
Greatest ribs ever! Pea Fritters are great too - unique
The pork sandwich was heavy on bread and light on meat. Beet salad and cornbread very tasty. Service awesome.
Despite my friends being delayed due to unforeseen traffic, the hostess seated me at my table to wait. The server was knowledgeable and attentive. As always, the food was delicious. Brussel sprouts, fried chicken, shrimp and grits, and the winter risotto....all well prepared and so yummy. It’s why I come back any time I am in the city.
Fried chicken dinner and pulled pork sandwich received rave reviews from my kids; my beet salad with goat cheese croquettes was absolutely delicious, however, the Spring risotto was a disappointment (extremely salty). They likely would have offered me something else had I asked, but vegetarian main dishes are limited so I didn't send it bake. Other positives: we had reservations and were seated on time; service was fast and server attempted to get to know us by making small talk, which was nice. Overall very good meal and experience.
Starts with service and it was excellent. The cocktails were fantastic, highly suggest the Gin & Jam!!! The menu isn't big but everything is super yummy and would recommend it to everyone and will definitely be back!
I loved this restaurant, but was not happy with OpenTable and my attempt to make a reservation for one. Realizing it was Valentine's Day and I was dining solo, I tried to book my table for one at 5pm. OpenTable told me that time was booked. But when I changed my reservation to two people, it worked. :(
The hostess was super gracious about this and even brought me a cupcake to celebrate on my own. Food was amazing.
Delicious food at a good range of portion sizes as we didn’t want a massive meal. Staff were very friendly.
Hops & Hominy was a great find! Nice variety on the menu. We tried the Po Boys and were not disappointed.
Our group or four was very late to our reservation. However, we were still seated on time when we arrived. The waiter was fantastic and the food was delicious!
Our waiter was phenomenal. It was a gentleman from Memphis, and I hope this gets back to him. My friend had just been served a horrific claim by her husband in her at the end of her divorce. Our waiter could not have been kinder and more understanding of he tried! Thank you!
Hops and Hominy is a good date spot. Service could be improved on. And the menu could use a few more items. Otherwise, the food is very tasty. I would go back
Overall the food was okay. I ordered the shrimp and the grits which were mediocre. The grits were too thick and needed more butter, cream and cheese. Another person ordered the fried chicken and biscuits, which were really great but the rest of the food was small portions for the price and just OK.
We’ve eaten here several times before and really enjoyed it but our experience last night was very poor. Our food came out quickly but our server never came back to check on us. We had to flag the buser down for our water to be refilled. We wanted some honey and never got it. The food was also extremely salty, this includes the salad which is super odd. Our waiter literally didn’t come back one time. We will not be back.
Really appreciated the very high quality food and the extremely attentive service
It was great! Food is always good and the bourbon cocktails are tasty.
As usual, the food was fantastic. The apple/pear salad was just right as a starter. The Shrimp and Grits were the reason we came and we were not disappointed. But there was a flaw in the evening. We we arrived fifteen minutes early for our appointment, the hostess pulled a power trip and told us that we would not be seated until the appointed time. As I scanned the dining area, there were several tables open. Yet, we had to stand for fifteen minutes while the hostess chatted with the waiter. When we were finally seated, in a table that had been opened the entire time, her attitude was that of being bothered by having to seat us. The waiter was prompt but forgot to deliver items we had ordered. He did deduct them from our bill when it was pointed out to him.
The Mac & cheese was amazing!!! Po’Boy and Shrimp and grits were also tasty. I especially loved the cornbread and butter they bring to the table. I’ll be back!
Delicious food and outstanding service. All four of us ordered different entrees and all were amazing. Grits and macaroni and cheese were especially good. Cornbread was outstanding!! Wanted to go back the next day, but it was Sunday and they were closed. Will definitely go back!!
I read all the reviews, but I always want to find out for myself. So glad I made that decision. Bar service and drinks, A+. Our Waiter Aaron, considerate, attentive, Knowledgeable and prfessional. Food, second to none. Fried chicken, cornbread is to die for. Mac and cheese , awesome. Grits, good. Wings, small but tasty. And our waiter suggested an off the menu pork chop on this night and it was so tender and juicy. Price? Who cares about price when the quality is this good. I would pay this again, I will dine this place again ( especially before the theater ) and I highly recommend this place
Amazing food and great ambiance, just off the beaten path of union square. DEFINITELY recommend to everyone.
The food is good. The service was poor during our last visit. We were constantly being rushed and ended up being there for only about 30 minutes. Our server wasn't very friendly, either.
Love the food! Grits delish! St. Louis Ribs delish! Cornbread, butter, wings also very good. Chicken good except white meat a little dry!
Service was fantastic. Waiter helpful hostess very nice.
I just don’t know if the price was worth it! $200 for 4 only 2 beers and no dessert. San Francisco is expensive and they have that dreaded health mandate fee! Sometimes not worth to eat out!
I would still recommend if
Someone looking a great spot in the union square area and have money to burn!
Best fried oysters I have had in a long time maybe ever. The corn bread was to die for also. My wife said the Brussel sprouts were great too. The fried chicken was very good but not amazing. Drinks were really good. Will definitely go back.
Great southern restaurant! I loved the food :)
this place is wonderful. i absolutely love it. you have to try the fried chicken and the mac & cheese
We live in the South Bay and have been coming up for a San Francisco stay for 15 years. Usually we come for the holidays as well as several times a year for concerts or plays. For the last 5 years we have made it a point on our visits to have dinner at Hops & Hominy at least once or twice. We have loved the food and the vibe is warm, casual, real. Though the service was good, this last dinner however was mediocre - at best. The chicken was dry and not anywhere near the moist, delicious real deal as in the past - our biggest disappointment. And the ribs were fatty and not at all up to speed. Biscuits and corn bread were the only saving grace. I also asked for the house Chardonnay, which was another disappointment, especially at $15 a glass.
We will probably not go back, which is sad because Hops & Hominy had become something of a tradition on our SF trips. We had far superior fried chicken during a recent live blues show at Biscuits & Blues, and near our home in Los Gatos we have a place called Bywater, which still knows what their doing with true southern fried chicken.
Something happened at Hops & Hominy that is not good. Maybe a new chef or owners took over but they are missing the boat in terms of preparing their signature foods, which in the past was so amazing that we have been sending friends for years, several who live in the city.
It felt like they were trying to hurry us so fast to get us out. The server seemed impatient. She took our utensils away when there was still food on the table.
The restaurant was busy and we had a reservation so we were seated promptly. The service was slow but besides that the food was delicious and the drinks were fun. The cornbread and sweet butter is so yummy. The shrimp and grits are a must try! Would highly recommend and will definitely come back.
Every dish we had was excellent! We also enjoyed the beer and wine selections. The service was very attentive. The only drawback would be the noise level in the main dining room; our conversations required raised voices. The restaurant is vibrant and lively!
Great food and atmosphere! Thanks from a party of 6!
Good food great service and location. Quantity and taste of the food is not worth the value.
Delicious vegan burger best we’ve tasted anywhere!
Wish you were open on Sundays. I am looking for a place to eat for lunch.
The food and drinks were good. We were seated promptly and were able to talk easily throughout our meal.
We split appetizers between the four of us and they were absolutely wonderful! The wings were one of my favs.
Weird environment, food is very tacky and bland in taste. Employees very rude.
Service was great - friendly and fast. Food delicious
