About HopMonk Tavern - Novato
If you’ve been to our first two Taverns you’ll expect another original interpretation, this time in Northern Marin County, of the things we love. That’s serving fresh, in-season craft beers alongside our Tavern classics, Kellerbier, Tavern Ale, IPA, and Dunkelweizen. Preparing in our new exhibition kitchen tasty Tavern fare, this time adding wood fired pizza. We bring the outdoors in by connecting the tavern to our beautiful beergarden under five California old growth oaks. HopMonk Tavern - Novato Ratings and Reviews
We were looking for a place for lunch to take my 90+ mother and needed it to be easy access and not too fancy. HopMonk was all that. Service was very good (we got there on the early side) and the menu was great. However, unfortunately the food did not live up to expectations. I would definitely try it again, but probably would try other items. Their Pork Sliders were dry. The French Onion Soup was a strange version....not bad, but not really very good either. Their Cheese Sandwich so-so. Mom liked the Beef Sliders and they did look good. The Caesar Salad was fine.
All in all, I wish the food was better. It was a convenient location and the atmosphere nice. I will try it again.
Service is not improving. We arrived at the reserved time and the host told us we need to wait approx 15 min because there was a door line of 10 min. I questioned then, what is the difference to use this app and make a reservation if I need to wait the door line?
Service is slow and there is not enough employees to absorb and support the clients.
Place is awesome but service needs to improve.
It took our waitress 45 minutes to serve our drinks, another 45 minutes to serve our food, and one guy in our group had to wait an additional 30 minutes (over an hour since the drinks arrived) to get his BURGER. The waitress claimed the delay was from another large group. However, we also had a reservation, the other larger groups sat down after us and they got served their drinks and food eons before us. We didn't stiff the waitress- actually, she still got a healthy 25% tip as the problems were clearly beyond her control- the bartenders, the cooks, etc. But I will tell you this- our company will not be back.
Went down to Novato to see live music that was featured that evening. We were seated promptly and server appeared as we were seated. Asked him to return when we had had a chancer to look at menu. Ordered drinks, waited....told that drink ingredients were out. Ordered again.....food arrived before drinks. When I mentioned this to food deliverer, she returned immediately with my drink. Food was fine - tasty and well prepared. But service was definitely off on the evening of our visit. I've had lunch on a previous visit and did not experience any of the problems of this visit.
They had an off-night when we were there. Service was very slow (the server apologized at the end of the mail - saying it was a "crazy night"). No one checked on how the meal was once we got it. I had to return the kale salad which was way over-salted. They remade it without salt for me. I have always enjoyed it but that night was not a good one for them. I hope this was an exception.
This was our 3rd visit to HopMonk Tavern. Other 2 visits were excellent with no issues with food or service. However this time, there were several issues - they ran out of several items that I ordered, and these were the results.... I had Taco appetizer and the kitchen substituted 2 chicken tacos for the pulled pork without telling my waiter or me; the chicken on the tacos was dry and tasteless. I also had the Caribbean coleslaw , which the kitchen substituted the same coleslaw that was on my tacos without telling my waiter or me, and the coleslaw wasn't good on its own. They ran out of the french onion soup that I ordered, but they were able to make some more, but it was under-seasoned, and I suspect made for the next day, but it was good enough, so I ate it. They had a big party outside, and I suspect that they could not handle the volume. Our waiter was excellent, and apologized and took the offending items off of our bill. We will give this restaurant one more chance, but if we have issues like this again, we won't be back.
Assistant manager Natalie went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our dining experience and noticed how much she was helping her servers and staff. More hands on than most
managers at other restaurants. This has been our favorite Hopmonk location for years due to their cleanliness and exemplary service thanks to Natalie and James. Love their seasonal veggies and options.
Took forever to get our check. Once our check arrived it took forever to pay. We came to Hopmonk for the music. We missed some of the show due to taking over 30 mins to get our check and paying for our meal. We ended up leaving the credit car so we can get in line to the show.
Beer choice is excellent. Food was a little mixed: great burgers, fish & chips, Reuban sandwich, and chicken wrap, but the samosas seemed to have been reheated or refried, and the sausage bits were really greasy - I wouldn't recommend them.
Our server was very friendly and efficient.
Overall, it is a fun, lively place to go, with friendly service and mostly pretty good food.
The waitress could not have bee more helpful or attentive. My 6 year old daughter tried buffalo wings for the first time and had trouble with how hot they were, to the point she had tears in her eyes. First the waitress promptly brought us a cup of ice water when we requested it and then after hearing about my daughter's mouth on fire-offered to bring her a cup of milk to help out the heat out. This was much appreciated, and she didn't even charge us for the cup of milk. Excellent service. All the food was correct but we did not care for the baked chicken entree and the burger for my daughter was asked for well done, but it came out mostly black. Probably would not have an issue if you ask for a cooler temperature meat. All in all I highly recommend. Best fries in Marin!
Service was really, really slow. I had reservations and was seated immediately, but no wait staff arrived. After about 5-7 minutes I flagged our hostess and asked about the waiter/waitress. The hostess took our drink and food order, and then someone else brought us water and then our food came out about 45 minutes later. Partway through our meal, a waitress finally came by and checked in on us. Not impressed. I also ordered a portabello version of the chicken naan sandwich and found a piece of chicken in it. It was as if the sandwich had been premade, then the chicken scraped out and replaced with mushrooms and they missed a piece. Gross.
We went to Hopmonk Novato to see the B Sharp Blues Band, which was great. The only issues we had were with the price of our food for what we paid, slightly over-priced. And the other issue was when we went into the room to see the band. WHY in the world would they not have more tables and seating??? We had to sit way in the back and it was not intimate with the band at all. When we asked, we were told they needed to "leave room for people to dance, but they still had plenty of room to put in a few more tables and plenty of chairs. PLEASE FIX THAT and we will return.
When we checked in, they told us space was reserved for outside. We were seated on the outdoor patio and although it is tented, it was cold! When I tried to get a seat inside they said they were all taken. It was really ridiculous because anyone else they started to see it outside insisted on going in, but they didn't have space for us!
I've eaten here before and I generally like their food and their service. But this night was a bust. My husband made a reservation to take me out for my 40th birthday (a milestone I'd rather have not celebrated but if I had to anyway I was looking forward to a nice dinner). We arrived and were seated immediately but after 20 minutes still had not been asked even for a drink order. We left. It will be a while before I give them another try, which is too bad because I've been salivating for their warm beet salad ever since I set my heart on it.
service was horrible! sat for 20 mins before a waiter even came over to our table and he went to a table that sat down 10 mins after us first. drinks took forever like i'm talking 25 mins. asked for water 4 times before we got it. no silverware even after asking twice, we got up and got our own. dinner dishes left on table when dessert was brought to table. nobody cared never cleared our table just put the dessert down in the middle of dirty dinner plates and walked away, again no silverware. food was good but service was by far the worse i have ever experienced which left us pretty miserable by the time we left. we not return because of service.
My wife and I had a date for Saturday night, at Lagunitas, in Petaluma, where we had gone several times. At noon, on that day, I took my truck in to be serviced at the Toyota dealership, across the street. I invited my friend to walk to Hop Monks for a beer, while we waited. I had driven past Hop Monks many times, but had not gone in. I did not know they had an outdoor eating area. We entered, and were seated outside. It looked like a mini-Lagunitas. We were there for a beer, only, but I saw what other customers were eating, and so I checked the menu.
I saw the guy next to me eating a burger with fries. Lagunitas doesn't have frying facilities, so no fries. I saw another guy eating tacos. He said they were fish tacos. When I got home, I said to my wife, "We're not going to Lagunitas, we're going to another place." We took my daughter and her husband, my mother-inlaw, and my granddaughters. The calamari appetizer was outstanding. I ordered a burger, but it was not great. I liked the fish and chips, the pulled pork, and the ham and cheese sandwich that I tasted. The food menu is extensive, so next time I will have something else. I had the house IPA, which I liked. They also have an extensive beer menu, a wine menu, and serve mixed drinks. It seems very family-oriented. My granddaughter and I rolled around in the grassy area, near the stage, where a guy was playing guitar. My family and I all had a good experience, and this will be our new eating place. Sorry, Lagunitas
