Homestead was founded by husband and wife team Fred and Elizabeth Sassen in 2013. The menu is driven by Fred and Elizabeth’s cooking-by-hand philosophy as the couple makes nearly everything in house, and the dishes are inspired by the couple's travel, nostalgia and California's amazing products. The dining room is rustic and intimate with an open kitchen running the length of the dining room, culminating in the wood burning hearth. The restaurant is inspired by Elizabeth's great grandparents who were homesteaders in Wyoming at the turn of the century. With hospitality and a daily changing menu the couple strives to offer an experience that is an extension of their home; a place to have a meal with a sense of family and community. Fabulous meal! It was our first date night out since COVID and it was amazing. Four course pre fixe menu - beautiful refined cuisine with a very safe set-up (well-distanced outdoor tables, single-use menus, masked servers, etc).

Everything here is made from scratch and innovative and delicious. Their homemade sourdough bread is the best I've ever had in the Bay area, and you can even buy individual loaves. Glad they are back.

We liked Homestead before Covid, but we are even more impressed now. At the last-minute we decided to try our luck at a real date for our anniversary and scored a table. Homestead has transformed a small alleyway adjacent to their building into a European sidewalk cafe serving inventive yet still comforting American cuisine. (Don't miss the gnudi!) Warm and welcoming but professional service (even as they recite strict Covid protocols, they put you at ease). Only a few decisions to make with a 4-course prix fixe that will please whether you want light or heavy, fish or meat. Great wine recs. Thoughtful touches like salted chocolate chunk cookies in a tiny box with "Happy Anniversary" in someone's gorgeous cursive put our alfresco evening out over the top. Thank you Homestead.

The fixed menu offered excellent and diverse choices. Everything was delicious and well prepared. Overall, the format represents a good value. The short rib mole entrée with delicata squash was inspired.

Homestead is doing an amazing job keeping a positive face through the challenges of operating in a pandemic. Service was impeccable and our food matched. The menu included one of the best pasta dishes I’ve ever had with perfectly moist and crispy meat. Sugo de Carne, please bury me with it.

We had a lovely anniversary dinner. With CoVid, we had single use menus printed with Happy Anniversary which was a nice touch. They had tables set up in the alley which is okay but only so much you can do in this situation so we totally understood. The service here is fantastic! Everyone is very welcoming and friendly. It was a prix fixe menu with two choices in each of four courses. We had one of everything so we could share and try all the dishes. All of the food was excellent and the main entrees of duck and trout were delicious! We were completely stuffed by the end of the meal but still managed to have some port with our desserts. They have an extensive wine list for all kinds of budgets. The gratuity is included in the price of the meal so its nice they are supporting their employees this way. It would be great if they could create a little more ambience at the tables (a flameless candle? or something for mood lighting) but overall we loved it and would come again.

What a treat! My friend and I celebrated our birthdays with exquisite food and great service. The duck was outstanding - the best I have ever had. As a matter of fact, everything was delicious and well presented.
I will soon come back when the chocolate pie is on the menu.
When we left, we received a Happy Birthday gift: chocolate chip cookies. Thank you!

We went for my birthday. They did a great job making it a special night. They also were awesome with making us feel safe in this time of COVID. The food was good overall. Not thrilled with how my sides were cooked with my main course but everything else was very enjoyable.

The food was delicious & creative, as always. Of course, dining out during Covid is a different experience, but they handled it all very well. A perfect balance of warm attentiveness and safe distance and precautions. Looking forward to a time when we can dine again inside their lovely restaurant, but until then, we’re very grateful to enjoy the Homestead experience outdoors.

Homestead serves outstanding food outside in the space next to them. The fixed price menu provides great choices and each one is plated as if in a Michelin star restaurant. Fred and Sue are welcoming hosts, and service is very personal. Try it, its a wonderful experience.

We took advantage of momentary great air quality and had another fantastic Homestead meal. They have done everything they could, short of painting elaborate murals on the walls of both buildings and putting down astroturf, to turn their alley space into an inviting outdoor eatery. Bistro lights, music, attentive service, and you still have big windows to see into the open kitchen. The food continues to be both creative and tasty. We'll be back!

I've dined at Homestead several times and have always been pleased, but this last visit left a sour taste in my mouth. I took a friend here for her birthday intending to treat her to dinner. Once seated, our server came to take our order. My friend wanted a glass of sparkling rose. Our server informed us they didn't have one by the glass but could do a half bottle. I said this was fine and that we could share it. I was shocked when the bill came that the total was $282 dollars for the two of us to have dinner! The *half bottle* of sparkling rose was $80! Yep, my fault for not asking, I guess, but I feel that this is exorbitant for a half bottle of wine and that the server should have mentioned the price when offering it. I appreciate that Homestead includes gratuity in their prices to ensure a living wage for their staff, but this experience left me feeling taken advantage of.

It was very nice and felt taken care of. My only critique would be the hand sanitizer they provided had a very strong smell and distracted from the taste of the food. Odorless would be a smart choice when purchasing this again.

We came for my husband's birthday, which they printed special menus for the occasion. Our server, Emily, was great and knowledgable. They asked about Covid symptoms at the door, all tables were nicely spread out, and everything felt very safe with a lot of good communication.

The tasting menu was awesome and the $68 a person price for 4 courses and service felt very reasonable considering the quality.

We would go again if finding a sitter were easier in these pod times!

Homestead is serving food outdoors in an alley, and despite the obstacles serves the best food around. For a casual restaurant their plates are worthy of a Micheline star. They are offering four courses, two selections each course and the presentation and the mix of flavors are outstanding. Give them a try...its worth it...

I can't say enough good things about Homestead. My husband and I had dinner in their outdoor area - one of our few nights out over the past few months. Homestead has done an outstanding job of creating a lovely environment to enjoy their fabulous cuisine. The service was warm and professional. They have adapted very effective procedures for dealing with the virus (I hope this horrible situation ends soon so that indoor dining can resume). I encourage everyone to support our local restaurants and other businesses - they need our help. Homestead is a special place for our community. We'll be back soon!

Homestead has been my go to restaurant since it opened. The food is so well prepared and exquisitely creative. I am so happy that I was able to return to their newly opened outdoor space. I felt very safe. These folks know how to do things right!!!

Homestead is serving dinner outdoors now with the requirements. The food is absolutely outstanding,the portions nice size, and the dessert fabulous. Fred the owner and Sue make everyone feel at home and welcome and the dinner services is very efficient and friendly. Give them a try, you will enjoy the experience.

Lovely small restaurant but due to Covid the menu was reduced to a prefixed 3 course dinner menu unfortunately I wasn’t a fan of that but I was hungry and we were already there so I made the best of what I could with the dinner that was served I’d give it a three

This was our first dinner out since the pandemic and it was very special. I know and trust homestead and we weren’t let down. The set up outside felt safe and comfortable. It’s Oakland, so remember to bring a jacket. The food was delicious, as usual. It was wonderful to celebrate my daughter’s 18th birthday at our favorite restaurant.

Our experience at Homestead started out strong, but lost luster over the course of the meal. Our waiter made suggestions when asked, and I really appreciate a waiter with opinions. She also recommended a great wine (chablis!). So far so good. First course: octopus. excellent! complex without being overbearing. then the main meal. Waiter hadn't asked my wife how she'd like her ribeye (she usually goes with medium). It came out nearly rare, but still quite good. My wife didn't finish so the rare preparation ensured it wouldn't be overdone when warmed up for leftovers. But the side chard was overly salty. The sole was really tasty (hollandaise? yum!) but a touch too salty as well. We wanted to send the chard back, but couldn't get our waiter's attention for several minutes, even though the restaurant wasn't super busy. The replacement was marginally less salty, but didn't have the crunchy bits on top like the original serving. When a restaurant builds in service charge into the pricing (which I appreciate and prefer that transparency), you expect them to deliver on service. I expect the waiter to come check on us shortly after our first bites. Though we were quite full, we decided we'd try a dessert. It was forgettable. Nonetheless, we enjoyed the overall experience and the food has so much potential. But who picks the music? Here's a sampling of what was playing: Boston, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, it was music better suited to a sports bar in the 80s than something homey and warm.

I'd like to think it was an off night and I'd like to come back...if I can convince my wife.

This is maybe my all time favorite restaurant. I took some ladies there for part of a bachelorette party. Sue, the manager was so helpful with last minute changes. They personalized the menus for the occasion and it was truly special!
