Californian
Homestead was founded by husband and wife team Fred and Elizabeth Sassen in 2013. The menu is driven by Fred and Elizabeth’s cooking-by-hand philosophy as the couple makes nearly everything in house, and the dishes are inspired by the couple's travel, nostalgia and California's amazing products. The dining room is rustic and intimate with an open kitchen running the length of the dining room, culminating in the wood burning hearth. The restaurant is inspired by Elizabeth's great grandparents who were homesteaders in Wyoming at the turn of the century. With hospitality and a daily changing menu the couple strives to offer an experience that is an extension of their home; a place to have a meal with a sense of family and community. Please note: We take a limited amount of online reservations. Please contact the restaurant for additional availability.

Our experience at Homestead started out strong, but lost luster over the course of the meal. Our waiter made suggestions when asked, and I really appreciate a waiter with opinions. She also recommended a great wine (chablis!). So far so good. First course: octopus. excellent! complex without being overbearing. then the main meal. Waiter hadn't asked my wife how she'd like her ribeye (she usually goes with medium). It came out nearly rare, but still quite good. My wife didn't finish so the rare preparation ensured it wouldn't be overdone when warmed up for leftovers. But the side chard was overly salty. The sole was really tasty (hollandaise? yum!) but a touch too salty as well. We wanted to send the chard back, but couldn't get our waiter's attention for several minutes, even though the restaurant wasn't super busy. The replacement was marginally less salty, but didn't have the crunchy bits on top like the original serving. When a restaurant builds in service charge into the pricing (which I appreciate and prefer that transparency), you expect them to deliver on service. I expect the waiter to come check on us shortly after our first bites. Though we were quite full, we decided we'd try a dessert. It was forgettable. Nonetheless, we enjoyed the overall experience and the food has so much potential. But who picks the music? Here's a sampling of what was playing: Boston, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, it was music better suited to a sports bar in the 80s than something homey and warm.

I'd like to think it was an off night and I'd like to come back...if I can convince my wife.

This is maybe my all time favorite restaurant. I took some ladies there for part of a bachelorette party. Sue, the manager was so helpful with last minute changes. They personalized the menus for the occasion and it was truly special!

Another great meal! We love dining here. The shrimp ceviche was the only thing we had which we think could be fine tuned slightly - very sour and a little less balanced that we expected. Great service and a wonderful evening.

Fifth visit over the course of two years. Menu seems less varied than earlier visits and proteins seem to be less expensive cuts and selections. (This might be due to seasonal availability) Seviche was sour as if the lemon juice had been squeezed earlier rather than fresh. Chicken was undercooked and pink at the joint. This was quickly remedied. Side of carrots and snap peas had no flavor.
Service was excellent and the house made bread was as fabulous as ever.
Can’t tell if there has been a change of chef or of the supporting line cooks. We will give it another chance, but will read reviews in the interim.

Family style Sunday dinner was disappointing. Too casual, too small portions for the price. Could have done individual plates to make it a lot nicer.

Homestead is among our very favorite Oakland restaurants. Definitely a neighborhood gem, combining a warm and comfortable atmosphere with dependably delicious food. Our Valentine's dinner was no exception to this, with a couple of rare missteps. We ordered everything on the menu (both choices for each course) in order to be able to taste everything. Highlights were the crab salad and the ribeye. The wine pairings were impeccable. And the missteps? Both my wife and I found the little gem salad and the branzino to be over-salted. And this from someone who has worked in a kitchen and truly believes in the value and flavor of salt! So to have two dishes in one meal that tasted this way... is there someone new in the kitchen with a heavy hand on the salt shaker?

Lovely, romantic atmosphere for a date night or with a small group of friends. Our server was very knowledgeable of the menu and wine selections. Although slightly disappointed I wasn’t able to taste the wine before ordering a class, but not a big deal overall. All of the food was great with a beautiful presentation. I’ll definitely be back!

Food was very very thoughtful. I appreciate the attention to texture and flavor in a dish. I like that "tips" are included in the price. I like that I can easily have a conversation as well...a noisy restaurant takes away one of the niceties of going out to dinner with company!

Food was excellent but portions were TINY. Literally the arugula salad had like one tablespoon of arugula. I would go back, but recommend going on an expense account. Each course is between $15-$40 (including gratuity) and they recommend 3 courses. I think we had 5 courses and one side for 3 people and it was OK. All in all though...the food is EXCELLENT! The bread is UNREAL. Maybe my favorite part of the meal. The homemade pasta--superb!

A little pricey even considering the (applaudable) practice of paying a livable wage to employees and not including a tip line on the credit card tab. Emily, our server, was amazing and deserves the highest marks. We had the $90/pp "feast" and probably could have ordered ala cart and kept it down a little but we were curious. The quality of the food and ingredients were top notch. Thoughtfully curated wine list. We had a wonderful Peay syrah that we enjoyed very much but the list goes way up to mega bottles if that floats your boat. Very warm ambiance. The chairs are of the elementary school circa 1975 variety and get a little hard toward the end of the meal but I suppose by then you should be moving along anyway. On the whole, a charming place that I'm proud to have in Oakland. We shall return.

While I have been coming to Homestead for quite a few years, and I always look forward to the delicious food, I was quite disappointed and upset with the new wait staff this past weekend. They seemed very annoyed at our table for some reason, which I didn't understand. My dinner partners were two renowned doctors who are very well mannered and respectful of wait staff, but our waitresses couldn't be bothered or openly showed that they didn't care. They also brought us our bill before we even started dessert- and it was quite early in the evening. Everything about the experience has left me disappointed and I probably won't return just based on the wait staff. Our dinner was really good though, so the Chefs are doing a great job. We must be fair in these reviews, so kudos to the talented chefs.

The food is excellent and the menu sufficiently diverse to satisfy many. The three course menu format seems more like a dinner rather than a series of small plates which fulfills the name "Homestead". The service was brusque and perfunctory which diminished our enjoyment. This is the second time the service didn't meet the standard of the food - we stayed away from the restaurant for a year due to our last encounter. Is it possible that the built-in tip in a disincentive to being more attentive to make sure that diners are having a good experience? Are the servers being trained/managed adequately?

Birthday dinner for girlfriend. Emily delighted us with her attentive service. Chicory salad, quail, branzino was perfectly paired with Peay Voigner. Chocolate cake for bday dessert finished off the night. Wonderful conversation with owner Fred concluded an amazing evening.

The food was surprisingly just okay. And $32 for mediocre Shakshuka with one single egg was actually hilarious. I've been to Homestead before and love the ambiance but sad to see the food going downhill and the prices going uphill. No wonder I was able to get a last minute reservation.

Great experience...mostly!😎 when we called to tell them we would be 5-10 minutes late due to traffic the hostess reminded us that our table was booked for the next guest in 1 hr 30 minutes...huh?!?! Never in 50 yrs of fine dining have I been told that...asked them to make an exception and serve the fixe price appetizer....nope not even for your anniversary 😳on the bright side, food was GREAT! Owner makes the rounds and seems to care! We will return but....don’t even THINK about being late🤪

Went for Oakland Restaurant week, the sampler of "classic" dishes was delicious and well rounded. I love that gratuity is built in so staff get a living wage and you are fully aware of your costs. Service was great, the vibe was nice, and the food and wine were excellent.

My foodie husband picked Homestead for his birthday dinner. The service was GREAT. We love the fact that they pay their staff a living wage and the tip is built into the menu prices. We enjoyed our first two courses. Unfortunately my husband did not like the short ribs which tasted like pot roast to him He LOVES the short ribs at Italian Colors (where they cost $10 less.)

A nice dining experience. We came early, so on a cold evening were able to get a warm table near the oven. The main courses did not appeal to us on our visit, so we made a good meal of starters, salads and soup. Our two starter salads were good and enough for sharing, but the very good duck confit was only enough for one. We each had a crab bisque soup, which though thinner than we had hoped for, and with not quite enough crab pieces, was nonetheless quite tasty. House made bread and butter are a good accompaniment. Since we came early, it was pretty quiet for most of our meal, we could actually hear the music and each other talking.

This was my first visit to Homestead, meeting a friend in Oakland. It looked very good and maybe this was just an off-night, but I won't try again. Sunday is a pre fixe menu. The major disappointment was raw meat as a main course. Coming in, we saw the huge prime ribs on the grill. What came on our plates looked like it never saw the grill. It was a lot of chewing to work through dinner. Not great.
