Decent food, but super overpriced
Other than a single first-course dish, the food was bland and not particularly inspired. Also, one of our waiters -not a kitchen staff- got his hands all in our food as it was being plated. I saw him move the meat with his bare hands seconds after he was fiddling with something in his pocket. I managed to eat the food so as to not make a scene in front of my date, but that was just gross. Though the s et device was otherwise good, unfortunately, I will not be going back.
Second time here. First time was when the had just opened. Food was good but we were directed to only order one plate of each course and each plate was a small portion. Server rushed us the entire time. Laid a menu down and cane in 30 seconds. Tried to take our plates away when there was clearly still good to be eaten. Overall we thought it was an overpriced, disappointing experience. Won’t be going back.
Homestead is always delicious never a disappointment. The flavors in the food are amazing. I would highly recommend.
Great food. Wait person knew wine, alcohol list. Loud as evening progressed
Tasty heartwarming food on the Sunday supper price fixe meal. Friendly attentive service and atmosphere added to the cozy feel.
We are new to the neighborhood and Fred brought to our table some fresh baked cookies! Yummy treat!
You do not have to travel many miles and hours to get a wonderful meal. The meal we had (the
Sunday dinner) showed imagination, attention to detail and loving care. It was a special
occasion for us, but many patrons were just enjoying a Sunday time together with a delicious
We normally have an amazing dinner at Homestead. But tonight, the food was only good (not amazing) and our service was lacking. Too bad, because we brought someone new and she was underwhelmed.
The food and service were top notch! I highly recommend.
I love everything about Homestead including how the gratuity is included in the price. It’s just a lovely experience every time.
The food was excellent. Service also excellent, although somewhat slow. This would not have been a problem but for the uncomfortable seating. My mom, who is elderly, had to ask for a cushion to sit on. My husband also sat on a cushion meant to be leaned against. For the food, I will go back but I strongly suggest attention to the hard chairs.
Six of us went for dinner and shared a number of dishes from the dinner menu. Everything was interesting and delicious and we had fun choosing and sampling.
I've been meaning to try them forever so we finally did since the dinner menu for restaurant week was one of the best I saw from participating restaurants. The food was spot on and plentiful. The ambiance was lowkey since we sat at the back communal table. They were very busy as it was the last night but the service was timely considering. Overall a pleasant experience and I'll definitely be coming back for more.
We ate a prix fixe meal during Oakland restaurant week, and the selections were varied, fresh, and generally well prepared. Service, included in the menu prices, was consistent and generally helpful. Seven out of eight dishes were lovely. In fact, the octopus salad was quite good, except for the surprise globs of mayonnaise (aoili) in random zones across the plate.
A manager approached us early on to help decide on wines: one of the few misses of the evening. He really just suggested a half bottle of everything for the two of us.
If you don't wish for any wine guidance and don't take umbrage with potent hills of mayonnaise, this is the place!
The food was thoughtful and truly embodied farm to table methodology - thank you for an amazing meal
Homestead offers creative, thoughtful, well-executed cuisine in an unpretentious and friendly environment. The staff were exceptionally welcoming, and provided just the right level of attention. I liked the pricing model, which includes tip in the pricing - no fuss.
Lovely anniversary dinner here. Great tasting menu.
As usual, our dinner was exceptional. This restaurant has quickly become our go-to restaurant, especially to take out-of-town guests. We've never been disappointed with the food or the service. The food is unique and always tasty. The full menu at Restaurant Week was nothing short of fabulous.
Homestead is quickly becoming my go-to place for special occasions. It’s simply a wonderful restaurant. Delicious food, great service (much improved from a previous visit), ambience - it’s the best place on Piedmont Ave & that’s saying a lot.
Very different food. Excellent. Terrific service. Bread was delicious. Nice wine selection.
They had a nice Oakland Week special but we went with the al la carte rather than have the prime rib. The appetizers to the dessert were well presented, tasted very good but with sharing it was a bit on the lite side. I was saited but my husband said he coould have eaten more. Nice not to need to figure out a tip. The service was spot on and a well rounded meal.
We’ve been to Homestead three times: twice for dinner and once for breakfast. Dinner is underwhelming. The first time we weren’t super impressed but decided to give it another go for Restaurant Week. We were given bread that was obviously underbaked/raw. We politely let our server know and they brought back another raw loaf. Service was slow and they seemed to be training folks but the host was really nice and hospitable. The rest of the food was whatever: REALLY CHEWY crudo, lukewarm prime rib, etc. (the dessert was really good though) We love the ambiance but won’t be going back for dinner. However, we really like their breakfast bar!
I brought my fiance here for a birthday dinner on Sunday and it was perfect. Cozy and romantic, the tasting menu was awesome and the octopus and roast beef were the best I've ever had. The wine service was also the best I've ever experienced! The options were manageable and delicious, and they split glasses for us so we could pair better without getting drunk.
Loved it! I felt that the staff could read my mind- they knew what we needed next before we even had to ask! The food was fantastic and each course more delightful than the last.
Another great meal at Homestead. Consistently wonderful!
Superb food. Terrific ambiance. Great staff. Beautiful open kitchen. Homestead is one of the gems of the East Bay.
I should have known better than to visit this establishment. We are not fans of farm to table restaurants and this one can now be added to the list. The food was fine but given the prices I really expected a bit more. The preparation was fine the flavors were fine. Just overall the restaurant was fine. Nothing really justified the prices (and yes I am aware that the tip is included).
The food was disappointing as well as the overall value. Probably won't return.
Delicious food, service, and ambiance. Always consistent! Parking is conveniently in back.
Always a delight to visit Homestead. This time it was New Year's Eve and it was cozy and festive. The staff are very knowledgeable and eager to share their thoughts on what's happening in the kitchen.
We went for NYE and they were a hot mess. They had 2 prixe fixe menu options in Opentable but only offered the one when we got there. They had swapped the ordering for the courses but didn't inform us and we had to ask if we had missed a course. This was just a bad dining experience over all. Service had a very slow start. Food wise, some dishes were good, others were a miss, like the risotto which really wasn't risotto; it was more of a porridge. The steak was under seasoned and way under cooked. I'm all for medium rare, but this was very rare and the meat was gristly so it was hard to eat.
the Food for NYE was OUTSTANDING from appetizer to dessert. The wine pairing were delicious. It was one of the best meals I've every had!!!!!!!!
Party of 4. Great place with excellent service and amazing, Fantastic food. My son loved the beer offerings, noting the interesting selection of quality beers. Excellent salad, grilled quail (sooo good), nettles, lobster, foie gras and a devine chocolate dessert.
This is my second time at Homestead, and this was the NYE fixed menu.
The food is good, but it’s not outstanding. It costs approximately 20% more than a comparable local Oakland eatery, but it’s not 20% better (I am not confusing the Premium pricing for their practice of including gratuity for their staff—it’s still a premium given the gratuity). I don’t need to go back again. It’s pretty inside, the staff are great, but it’s not worth the price of entry.
We had another fabulous meal here. This was the Sunday dinner—prime rib, Caesar salad, spinach and au gratin potatoes with a banana split for dessert. This was one of the best meals I’ve ever had—perfect combination of tastes and textures. The service and ambience were outstanding as usual. Just perfect from beginning to end.
I went to Homestead after many years of curiosity! It was excellent, but not amazing. I'd rather go to Chez Panisse Cafe over this restaurant, but I'd recommend it to anyone!
This was one of the least enjoyable meals I have had. It is unfortunate as I am generally easily to please person, and is the first review I have written maybe ever. This was supposed to be a nice night out for my girlfriend and I before she left for a month, and instead I got a server who literally did not speak and just put food down without any care. She dropped the check in front of us while we were in the middle of eating dessert. The host could be overheard behind saying how sick she was of being there. The food was good but not at the price point. It was just a disappointing meal and should of just went to a neighborhood place where people actually talk to you and care about the family feel of a place.
Juliette our server was delightful, informed and helpful recommending a great wine selection and describing dishes and encouraging us to share plates.
