Contemporary American
The Hog's Apothecary is a New American beer hall in Oakland’s Temescal district created by Chef/Owner John Streit. The atmosphere is convivial with a blend of communal tables and bar seating in a converted warehouse with floor to ceiling windows. The Hog opened it’s doors in 2013 helping to cement the Temescal neighborhood’s growing distinction as a foodie destination in the Bay Area. Our menu features a regular rotation of organic, farm-direct produce and house-made delicacies to please the palate of the carnivore and vegetarian alike. We have a regular rotation of fifty plus beers, ciders, and wines on draft and in bottles. The diversity of our list and menu has Hog’s Apothecary routinely ranked among the best gastropubs in the state.

Our mission has always been simple: To lift the expectation of food in a beer-centric restaurant while also showing people that a great dining experience can be made better with beer.

Please call to reserve tables for 6 or more.

Communal tables. Got very noisy. The artichoke appetizer and softshell crab sandwich were exceptional. Our first waitress was very friendly but she left and another waitress was a little rude. If you add on the side of pickles it’s a very tiny pile of pickled celery and onions.

The pork chop is plentiful and good. The beet salad was excellent. They offered tastings of beer and cider.

This was my first time here. The parking is non-existent. The food, however, was very good! Delicious! They do need more options on their Brunch Menu. I recommend coming for the food!

The food here is always amazing! Some of the best brunch in town. It is a casual atmosphere, so ambiance is more like a bar/ cafe that is louder and bustling, but not annoyingly so. Very good coffee. Reasonably priced.

Really having fun tasting new beers weekly...took a real liking to the single hop that I've never tried before!! Still the best pork chop in town. Have also taken a liking to the pulled bbq sandwich too - would rival a Midwestern one but the jalapenos give it the California twist that's great!!

Out food was yummy and the server great! It was just so incredibly loud though it made it hard to enjoy a date night out! Fortunately it wasn’t crowded so we were able to change from community table where we were seated across from each other to a place near the window where we could sit next to each other. Still, it was a lot of having to strain to have a conversation and only one of us could hear the server at a time, depending on which person she stood near.

Brunch was really good. Wait staff was attentive but not pushy. The host did accidentally give our table away to someone who showed up with a similar name which was annoying but they were still able to accommodate us.

We've been here multiple times but this was not a good visit. The worst part was our server who clearly didn't understand the menu then got irritated with us when she made errors in our order. She then gave us the cold shoulder for the rest of the meal. Couldn't believe it.

If you’re a carnivore and you love beer, this is the right place. The staff are knowledgeable with the beers they carry and the list has something for everyone. They also have draft wines. The food is upscale pub grub and their brined pork chop is to die for. My only negative comment is we booked a table for 9:30 on New Year’s Eve and when we got there, they told us they were sold out of food. Despite the disappointment we have gone back since.

The Chefs never ceases to do a top job - tried the fried chicken for the first time - amazing!! Light, crispy, flavorful & not greasy - pretty awesome! Now we we will have a hard time choosing between our favorite the pork chop and this.

Just when I thought I had tried everything, they put a wonderful spinach salad on the menu, truly tasty, and the pork chop (still the best in town) sides were also creative and tasty. Fun to taste new Pilsners every time. Great job and value 👍

Always great service with a smile and a sense of humor. Tons of options for drinks and a well-considered menu. We shared three dishes - a beet salad, meatballs with creamy grits and a tomato sauce, and one of the most tender steaks I've ever had with the tiniest shoestring potatoes. All were delicious.
