Hofbrauhaus - Chicago
The food was delicious, the atmosphere also fantastic. Live entertainment was decent. The service was a bit slow.
It was probably an off-night. We took some friends who had never been to this Hofbrauhaus, but were at the one in Munich. We had told them about the entertainment in advance, and we were all looking forward to the usual German music, sing-alongs, and such. But we were disappointed when it all came to an abrupt end at 8:00pm to be replaced with American music covers. The night started out badly, because we were seated at 7:20, but our server didn't even take our first drink order until 7:40. She acknowledged our presence perhaps 10 minutes before that. My wife noted that her Jagerschnitzel didn't have the same taste that it had serveral times previous. Our guests either had Sauerbraten, or the combination of Sauerbraten/pork, but they both commented that the Sauerbraten wasn't that sour. After my wife commented to the manager about the American music and the slow service, we were comped one round of drinks with an explanation that the German 'experience' usually ends at 8:00pm. We've had several good experiences with great food and the German experience in the past, mainly because our reservations for the two of us were earlier. My wife apologized to our friends a few times for the disappointing night. We've learned our lesson about getting there too late. There was no excuse for the slow service though, when the server's section wasn't that busy when we arrived. ---- I will still recommend Hofbrauhaus to a friend, as long as they get there well before 7:00pm.
Our server was Linda. First rate. Excellent experience
Enjoy the beer and food . . . Stay for the Gemeinschaft.
Arrived at 5:15 and were immediately seated. From there it took until 7:15 to finish. Long gaps between arriving, ordering drinks & apps, those arriving, so on. It seemed like the kitchen couldn’t keep up and the restaurant wasn’t half full. When it arrived food was ok, nothing that should have taken long to make. All in all, not what I would have expected.
The ambiance was fun with a German band and various contests. I could see that becoming more rambunctious as the night went on.
Food and beer were good but our service was poor. Ordered soup which never came. 2 people at the communal table with us were brought the wrong dishes.
Meh overall. The fact that this place was empty and everywhere else in the area was packed should have been a sign.
We have been to the Hofbrauhaus numerous times since it opened and I think this was the only bad experience we had. They were extremely busy and it showed in both the quality of food and service. First, my wife’s pot roast was extremely dry. By the time our waitress returned, everyone else had finished their meals and my wife didn’t want to order another entree that the waitress offered. My Wiener schnitzel was also only barely warm and didn’t taste as it has in the past. We hardly saw our waitress as it seemed that she had a party to tend to. We’ve never had a bad experience when we dined here, I think this was just an unfortunate time.
We had a totally fun experience! Made a reservation and when we arrived, we were seated immediately. Staff was friendly. If you don’t enjoy yourself at this place, it’s your own fault. One knock it’s a bit pricey. Note that they will validate your parking which is a big plus.
The Hofbrauhaus is a fun place to go with a group, but the noise level is so loud that it is difficult to carry on a conversation. The food is good and the circus is amusing. The worst aspect is finding a parking spot in the huge, overly filled parking garage and finding the appropriate exit!
It was good. I enjoyed myself
For a German Beer Hall it can be fun, good beer, food is okay but not great. Service started strong then disappeared once the entrees arrived. Overall good for a group.
Wish they’d offer German dishes for kids instead of the basic same old kids meals you can get anywhere so that i didn’t have to spend 20.00 on an adult size dish my kid wouldn’t finish. Otherwise great atmosphere!
Food was decent, service was efficient and informative. It's a fun place to bring young children since there's live music and places for them to run around.
Tables are communal but they seat groups with space between parties.
It may not be the best German food but it's worth a stop when you're in the area. It's our go to spot now to avoid sitting in traffic after picking people up from the airport.
Food was terrible
Went here on a Friday night to celebrate my sons 14th Birthday was perfect we got to dance on our table sing along with the band and the icing on the cake was the band signing happy birthday in English then German and threw in a yodel
We went to this restaurant for a birthday party. It was an off time so the noise level might be higher during peak times. They had live music that was so loud that you couldn’t hear anything else. They did not play constantly and for maybe 5 minutes at a time. It’s hard to find parking in front of the restaurant so we parked in the garage. The restaurant does validate your parking at the desk. The food was very good and we will return again!
Place was too loud to have a conversation. Service was slow even though not super busy. Food was good, however.
We met here for a small gathering of friends. The service and the beer were good, but the food was a little pricey for what you got. $14.00 for a pretzel is excessive!
Food was just okay. It was an experience. Server was very friendly.
Excellent new years spot!!! Both my girlfriend and I were surprised at how quick the food came out despite it being so busy.
The beer charges are exorbitant. Not many choices in menu. The vegan cutlets were tasteless, hard and chewy, only the outer fried part was good- not worth the price. Salmon fish was done well and good. The waitress was extremely patient and well versed with all the menu items and provided all information and suggested the right kind to order. She was also very nice and polite with very good/sweet attitude! So the good experience dining wise was the waitress, potato pancakes and fish!
New Years eve
A can’t miss if you are looking for something fun. Live music, friendly servers, and authentic German beer.
Great new years eve activity for kids! Took our 1.5 year old he had a good time!
We had THE BEST time at the NYE celebration. I am almost nervous to tell people about it because I want to continue coming back. The kids loved the magic show and the whole atmosphere was family friendly and festive. Our server was AMAZING- working his butt off. Thank you!
Love it! Visited HoifBrau Haus in Germany years ago. Same feeling here! Great food, too!
It's German food for Americans, like Olive Garden is Italian food for Americans. But it's a festive (and loud) atmosphere -- a fun place for groups and families.
(don't go hungry. the food is blah and really over priced. stick to the appetizers. the beer, however, is plentiful!)
Something was seriously off. I've been a regular at Hofbrauhaus since the soft opening. I have experienced where they had to shut down food orders and management handled that with professionalism and humility. I have been there for Octoberfest where the place was slammed and the staff never missed a beat. This visit can only be summed up as a train wreck. The problems fell in two areas food and entertainment.
I ordered the Jagerschnitzel for an entree. We were there on a Saturday afternoon, the place was almost empty, however, the food still came out cold. the sauce tasted gritty like it was a Maggi mix. We did a Pretzel for an appetizer, the Obatzda tasted more like Liptauer and had a crust on it, like it was pre-made the night before or put under a heating lamps by mistake.
The duo playing only made a bad dinning experience miserable. The female was trying to sing a soprano line and her voice was no, more like a 2d alto. Her performance made me feel like I was in Beijing listing to Pinyin or like fingernails on the chalk board. The male playing the tuba, was missing a lot of the notes. I ended up boxing my meal to go and finishing my beer and got out as quickly as possible.
Having pointed out minor issues in the past to management only to get the brush off, I felt it was best to leave and post a review.
Great food and fantastic beer. What more can you ask for?
The veeeeeery best
Amazing atmosphere! Worth a drive and family friendly.
Nobody raved about the food. It was adequate. I had the roast beef and it overdone and dry.
Service was ok, nothing to write home about. Won't be back anytime soon.
Man i love this place. Cant keep me away. Our waiter was a real star last weekend too. Blew us away as he took the mic!
Let's face it--you're not coming here for the food, which is good because most everything is too salty. The beer hall atmosphere and live music are the main draws and are lots of fun, tho' the volume of the music can be oppressive depending on where you are seated. The brews are decent but not worth the trip on their own. Weekends for lunch or an early dinner are better for the kids, as the crowd can get rowdier as the night goes on (and more leering too--the authentic costumes for the waitresses seem to give the place a "breastaurant" draw for some).
You don't go here for the food! Food is just average at best, but the atmosphere is of a genuine German venue. Noise level,is quite high but service was decent.
Best service and German entertainment !!!
Best music band Dolomiten Banditen !!!!
Great food. Best beer. A little slow but the place was hopping and the music was great so you don’t even notice the wait
Was awesome filling fun and entertaining! Thank You!!!
